Best survival game iPhone. 10 best survival games to test your will to live

best survival games to test your will to live

The best survival games are a challenge. Food, water, shelter, warmth. it’s primal stuff. They’re here to seriously test you, as you to fend for your life. But with their myriad resources, the best survival games will let you grow and become strong and take your ingenuity and resourcefulness to a whole other level.

There are so many fantastic survival games it’s been difficult to narrow it down to just the 10 very best of them. But, let’s start dealing with brain-dead zombies to ravenous wolves, empty stomachs, crazed cannibals, and more with the best survival games challenging your will to live today.

State of Decay 2

Developer: Undead Labs Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC

Some of the most tense moments I’ve had playing a survival game have come by way of State of Decay 2, Undead Labs follow-up to their 2013 zombie survival cult classic. Badly wounded, my stamina practically empty, limping between houses pursued by a horde of the dead, I was desperate to just make it to the relative safety of the truck I left parked on the road. Just a few feet more, and I could drive off, scavenged supplies intact, and know that I’d bought my little ragtag group of survivors a few more days.

On the other hand, if I was run down by the ravening monstrosities swarming all around me, I’d love not only valuable supplies, but a character I’d poured time into, building up their skills and watching them develop from shell-shocked newbie to hardened veteran, would be gone forever. State of Decay 2 is great at creating these moments with its punishing permadeath mechanic and the speed at which you can go from feeling like a zombie-slaying cyclone to helpless victim.

Don’t Starve

Developer: Tencent Games, Klei Entertainment Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android

Don’t Starve and don’t be fooled by those charming hand-drawn, Tim Burton-esque graphics. This is as dark, brutal, and unforgiving as survival games get, with strong roguelike elements that make slaying weird monsters – evil spiders and creepy pig-men a specialty – as important as collecting the materials you’ll need to craft tools, traps, and weapons, or simply stay warm and cook your food. Don’t Starve is a game where you need to manage your time and resources carefully, and regard permadeath as another step on a learning journey. The longer you survive, the more seems at stake, and isn’t that what survival’s all about?

best, survival, game, iphone, games, test

With some cracking additions like the Reign of Giants expansion or the nautically themed Shipwrecked, Don’t Starve is a game that just keeps expanding, adding features, and getting more engrossing as the months pass. And the Hamlet DLC coming later this year promises to continue the trend, with the addition of housing, new shops, and a load of new items to play with.

The Long Dark

Developer: Hinterland Studio Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android

Where other survival games involve elements of fantasy or horror, The Long Dark plays things straight; just you, a downed bush pilot, and miles of freezing, wolf-haunted Canadian wilderness in which to stay alive. Battling cold and starvation is tough enough, and you’ll need to eat, drink and rest in order to survive.

Yet go hunting and exploring and you’ll find there’s so much to discover for yourself. The team has bolstered the core sandbox survival game with a two-chapter story mode, where you’re searching for a doctor stranded in the wild, and both are crammed with tense, even terrifying moments and scenes of strange beauty. The Long Dark has grown into a survival great.

The Forest

Developer: Endnight Games Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, and PC

The Forest is the place where survival and survival horror meet. It’s bad enough being the sole survivor of a plane crash, stranded deep in a sinister forest. Worse still, when that forest is haunted by flesh-eating cannibal mutants who want nothing more than to eat you alive.

This is a game with a serious day/night cycle, where you spend your daylight hours repairing the camp, setting traps and scavenging for food, getting ready for the nightly onslaught from the creepy cannibal hordes. They’re ferocious and Smart and they work together, but you can explore their settlements and take the battle back to them. The Forest is dark and genuinely scary solo, and not much easier on the nerves in co-op mode. Its sequel, Sons of the Forest, is out now. but it couldn’t exist without the original, which has more than earned its place on this list.

Rust

Developer: Facepunch Studios, Double Eleven Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, and PC

It’s safe to say that Facepunch’s survival sandbox game isn’t for everyone. It’s legendarily challenging and hardcore in its nature, and the biggest question isn’t whether you’ll die, but whether it’s the wolves, the bears, the patrolling helicopters, or the other players that will get you first.

Everyone spawns naked in a random male or female avatar, and you’re stuck in a desolate landscape where nearly everything that moves wants you dead. Yet for some players, nothing beats Rust’s brutal, unforgiving nature and fraught combat, or the bonds it creates between players once they learn to trust one another. It’s always going to be divisive, but Rust keeps evolving in interesting ways.

Valheim

Developer: Iron Gate Studios Platforms: PC

Currently in Early Access on Steam (it’ll drop on Xbox One and Xbox Series X sometime in 2023), Valheim is taking the world by storm. One of the best tree-punchers on the market right now, it adds a sense of overall purpose to your overall challenge of, you know, not dying. You’re a battle-slain warrior whose soul has been ferried to Valheim, the 10th Norse world. You must slay Odin’s ancient rivals and bring order to Valheim, but also try and reach the final world and find rest. It offers co-op for up to 10 people, ship-building and sailing, and tonnes of mythology among the usual best survival games affair too.

Minecraft

Developer: Mojang Studios Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PS5, PC, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch

These days we think of Minecraft as a kiddie-friendly creative wonderland, so we forget that at its core there’s a brilliant survival game. Mining for materials, crafting tools and building a shelter is still as tense as it ever was, with one eye watching for sundown and one ear cocked for the moans of zombies.

Forging your first decent weapons feels a big achievement, and there’s plenty of excitement to be had in farming and foraging in an epic, unknown landscape, or fending off exploding creepers before they can breach your fortifications. We love Minecraft for its creativity, but there’s still a thrilling game underneath.

Frostpunk

Developer: 11 Bit Studios Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, iOS, Android, PC

Part survival game, part city-builder, Frostpunk is far from a walk in the part. as you’d hope for one of the best survival games. You are the leader of an alt-history late 19th-century community, and you’ll need to build and then maintain a city during a worldwide volcanic winter. Managing your resources and making choices about how to survive is key, and utterly bleak at times, especially as not everyone will survive. Exploring will help, as you’ll be able to find additional resources, other survivors, and other useful items, but it’s a risk too. It’s a beautifully balanced game that takes a while to master.

Raft

Developer: Redbeet Interactive Platforms: PC

For a game to limit its play space to a few square feet seems like a bad idea. What are players going to do to fill the time? On the contrary, says Raft, if they want more room to explore, they’re going to have to build it.

Set almost entirely on the makeshift watercraft of the title, Redbeet Interactive’s survival game is all about life at sea, tasking players to upgrade their vehicle, explore mysterious islands, fend off ocean-faring predators, and hopefully find their way back home before its too late. Think Fortnite meets Subnautica, and you get the idea, not to mention the reason for its inclusion on this list of best survival games.

ARK: Survival Evolved

Developer: Studio Wildcard Platforms: PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, Android, PC

Take survival, add sci-fi and dinosaurs, and you have the bare bones of Ark: Survival Evolved. The game’s built a huge fanbase despite dated visuals and a harsh difficulty level, just because it makes the business of staying alive so exciting, no doubt helped by the fact that beyond the giant reptiles and other hostile beasties, it’s other players that pose the biggest threat.

Build and upgrade your base and set traps and you’ll live a little longer. Join forces with a tribe and wage war on others, and you’ll live longer still. It’s not every game where you can tame a Sabre-tooth or ride a Megalodon, and no other game does survival on quite this T-Rex scale.

Best zombie games for iPhone and iPad in 2023

The zombie genre seems to resurge back into prominence regardless of how many movies, TV shows, or games are released with the same tropes. People seem to love zombie games allowing you to kill hordes of the undead. Even in 2022, it doesn’t seem likely that this genre will lose traction.

Admittedly, I’ve been a fan of the genre ever since I was introduced to it with AMC’s The Walking Dead over a decade ago. Since you’re reading this, I’m guessing that you love zombie games as much as I do. Keeping this in mind, I’ve curated a list of the best zombie games for iPhone and iPad. Let’s have a look!

Death Road to Canada – For casual players

Death Road to Canada could be the most random game you’ll ever play. I’m not stating this figuratively – I mean it literally!

The game’s biggest draw is that its levels are randomly generated – locations, events, skills, and survivors’ personalities.

In the game, you manage a group of survivors traveling from Florida to Canada, the last surviving nation on the planet after a massive zombie outbreak. On your travels, you’ll come across different survivors, events, and locales. over, since every element is randomized, you can replay the game multiple times.

Additionally, you can create your character, thanks to the in-game Character Maker. How your character fares will be based on the decisions, you take in your game’s playthrough.

While the game is extremely fun, it tends to crash frequently. This lack of stability can hinder the player’s experience.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes – Collectible card game

When you think of zombie games, you don’t usually think of them as collectible cards or board games. However, the geniuses behind the superhit Plants vs. Zombies series have managed to bring something worth your time.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes is an online game. In this game, you choose from 20 unique heroes who are either plant-based or zombie-based. Each Hero comes with unique powers and characterizations.

over, you can build a Hero crew by collecting cards from classic Plants vs. Zombies characters. Your Hero’s gameplay will be tailored according to the cards you choose. Thankfully, the game gives you ample room to experiment with characters and combos.

Both the botanical and zombie heroes have their unique journeys and maps to follow. This adds a certain amount of replayability to the game.

As a freemium game, microtransactions are encouraged here. This may be an issue with new players who don’t wish to pay for in-game items.

AI Dungeon – Text-based zombie adventure

The first computer games were text-based adventures that required you to input lines of text based on the situation. There were no visuals or sounds added to the game. Nevertheless, the games were huge hits amongst the fans.

AI Dungeon is a text-based, retro adventure game that offers plenty of possibilities. While it isn’t based completely on zombie adventures, the game allows you to play various scenarios involving hordes of the undead.

There are almost infinite possibilities as to how the game could play out. Each in-game action will determine the story’s outcome. With this game, not only do you get a good narrative-driven adventure but also a fair idea of what video games were like in the early days.

Unfortunately, the game’s scale often works against its favor as the AI can glitch at random moments.

Unkilled – Multiplayer zombie shooter

Unkilled is one of the top zombie games for iPhones and iPads. It takes inspiration from the phenomenal zombie series Left 4 Dead and uses similar elements to craft a great online experience.

Although the game is best played online with friends, there’s a solo campaign as well. You take control of a character from an elite team called the Wolfpack, the midst of a zombie apocalypse in New York City. There are over 150 missions to play – adding elements of world-building to the game.

Additionally, you can also play the game against other players in PvP mode. Rise the rankings by winning matches and gaining “intel” to level up your character’s skill tree. At the end of the ranked duels and leagues, you can win attractive rewards as well.

The game suffers from microtransaction fever, though. If you’re looking for a completely free gaming experience, this may not be for you.

Mini DAYZ 2 – Old-school zombie game

Some of us prefer underrated games. While action-packed zombie games are great, there are a few hidden gems that can gift you with an amazing experience. Mini DAYZ 2 is one of those games.

The game’s aesthetic is similar to older GTA games, with a top-down view. This implies that you’re not playing the game from a side-scroller, third-person, or first-person perspective. You play the game with an overhead view.

As a zombie outbreak plagues the world, you have to save as many people as you can. On the road to survival, you will encounter multiple survivors and become their leader. Choose tasks for your crew to keep the camp running. On a personal level, you will have to monitor your character’s vitals too.

The game has a retro feel, and this doesn’t apply to just its aesthetics. The gameplay is also rather challenging. However, it never seems to overwhelm you with difficulty spikes.

The major caveat, however, is that the game is buggy. Its experience would be far better if developers ironed out these issues.

Kill Shot Virus – Zombie sniper shooter

There are plenty of sniper games out there. However, only a handful have tried to do something different with the genre. Kill Shot Virus is one of those games.

It’s essentially a sniper game similar to Hitman Sniper. However, instead of eliminating mob bosses and high-profile targets, you tackle zombies in over 100 missions.

You have to protect survivors and eliminate hundreds of zombies while you’re at it. Some sections of the game also provide you with close-ranged combat and unique zombies to bring some variety to the gameplay.

You can also play the game with friends and create a survival faction. With this faction, you can play online modes and climb the leaderboards.

Unfortunately, the game’s microtransactions are absurdly expensive, even for seasoned players.

The Walking Dead No Man’s Land – Survival RPG

Would this even be a list for zombie game apps for iPhone if I didn’t include a game from the epic The Walking Dead franchise? There have been numerous games based on the series (not all of them good). Regardless, with The Walking Dead No Man’s Land, you get a great survival RPG.

The game follows the events of the show’s 11th Season. New episodes result in new missions, released every week. You can play multiple characters such as Shane, Beth, and Yumiko.

Essentially, the game relives key moments from the series. Besides, you have to collect survivors and train them to be an active part of the group. As the saying goes – a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Your crew’s survival will depend on basic resources, training, and strategic planning.

The game’s load times are extensive, though. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, it can get highly annoying.

Zombies, Run! – Running game

We’ve all seen trailers of movies and shows based on the zombie apocalypse, where the people are running for their lives as hundreds of zombies come after them. What if you were that person running from zombies?

This game is a mix of a fitness app and a running game. It combines elements of both, as well as a story written by the magnificent Naomi Alderman. The game becomes an audio adventure where you become the Hero of this post-apocalyptic zombie story and run around to collect supplies for your home base.

The concept is intriguing, and I believe that developers have executed it relatively well. You can combine the audio drama with songs from your playlist as you continue to evade the undead army. Thankfully, you’re also burning calories on your “supply runs”. As a great addition, the app syncs with Apple Health!

I wish that developers worked more on the in-built calorie counter, however. The counter seems highly inaccurate in calculating the calories burnt during runs.

It’s an ‘infectious’ genre, isn’t it?

Although the zombie genre often seems saturated at the moment, I’m sure that game developers will look for more ways to diversify the genre. For the moment, though, this is my list of good zombie games for iPhone and iPad.

What do you think of the trope, though? If given a chance, what kind of changes would you implement to make it more interesting? Share your opinions in the comment section below!
