Announced way back in the reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch, Skyrim is finally releasing this week for the system. The game, like many other third party titles on Switch, will have special costumes and gear that reference Nintendo’s own properties. The E3 trailer revealed Skyrim has the Hylian Shield, Master Sword and Champion’s Tunic from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
There are two ways to unlock the gear: amiibo and mountain climbing.
The first method can be performed as soon as you escape the dragon in the beginning of the game. Once you do, go into the Magic menu and you’ll find an “amiibo” power. Equip it and press the L button. Then you can tap amiibo to get various rewards. All figures grant some reward, but the Zelda line provides a chance to acquire the Zelda gear. You can only use each amiibo once a day. (It took us a total of ten amiibo scans to get all three pieces of gear, so you can keep that in mind going forward.)
The other method, if you don’t own an amiibo of a Zelda character, requires players to climb the Throat of the World, the highest point in Skyrim. The gear can be found on the peak of the mountain.
In terms of stats, the Master Sword has a Damage of 18, the Hylian Shield has 24 Armor, and the Champion’s Tunic has 48 Armor.

You can dress your Skyrim character in Link’s Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and Champion’s Tunic when playing Skyrim on Nintendo Switch. There are two ways to get this fantastic swag. One easy way and one not-so-easy, but possible for anyone way. Here’s how
How to get Link’s outfit and gear using Amiibo
The easiest way to get Link’s gear is by using one of the Link amiibo figures currently available to purchase.
If you have one or more of the above-mentioned amiibo figures, make sure you’ve registered them with your Switch.
While in the game, select your amiibo power in the Magic section of your menu. Then, Press the R trigger on your right Joy-Con to create a circle of light on the ground in front of you.
Tap the base of your amiibo near the NFC reader that is built into the right Joy-Con. You can rest it on top of the joystick or the Home button. Either is close enough.
If you don’t already own some of these figures, tracking them down could get expensive as not all of them are in regular circulation anymore. Here are the amiibo you need to complete the outfit:
- Twilight Princess Link: Champion’s Tunic, 8 Gold, 3 Carrots, Juniper Berries
- Toon Link: Master Sword, Iron Greatsword, 5 Steel Arrows, Steel Warhammer
- Skyward Sword Link: Hylian Shield, 5 Tomatoes, Juniper Berries
Once scanned, a loot crate will appear, which will hopefully yield one of Link’s items. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll get the tunic, sword, or shield right away (there is a 20% chance of getting one of Link’s items), but you can re-scan your Amiibo every single day until you get the swag you’re looking for (and even after that since you can also win other random loot).
The other Link amiibo currently available can also deliver special items, just not items that are part of the Link costume to equip in the game. According to the folks at Destructoid, you can get this stuff from the other Link amiibo:
- Smash Link:Hide Shield, Steel Arrow (4), Steel Greatsword, Juniper Berries
- 8-Bit Link: Iron Shield, Iron Arrow (4), Honey Nut Treat, Iron War Axe
- Ocarina Link: Iron Arrow (5), River Betty, Salmon Meat
- Archer Link: Iron Arrow (4), Slaughterfish Egg, Hunting Bow
- Wind Waker Link: Steel Arrow (6), Iron Sword (2)
- Majora’s Mask Link: Carrot (5), Gold (4), Lavender
- Rider Link: Steel Arrow (6), Iron Battleaxe, Blisterwart
You can also win random loot chests in-game by scanning other amiibo figures, like Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Chibi-Robo, Yoshi’s Woolly World, Skylanders SuperChargers, Splatoon, Kirby, Shovel Knight, Mega Man, Metroid, and Super Mario (standard).
How to get Link’s outfit and gear without using an Amiibo
If you’ve never invested in the whole Amiibo craze and don’t plan to just for Skyrim, or you are tired of not winning Link’s gear with your Amiibo scan, you can still find these coveted items in one special spot in the game.
According to an unnamed source at Bethesda that spoke with Finder, you can find a special loot crated at the top of the tallest mountain in Tamriel. The peak, named The Throat of the World is difficult to scale, but if you’re willing to make the trek, you will be rewarded with Link’s outfit and gear.

Skyrim and Doom Are Awesome on Switch
Nintendo’s home console / handheld hybrid has seen a ton of ports already and it’s only eight months old. Now that two of Bethesda’s biggest titles are available for the system, you may be wondering how they hold up so allow me to share my experience.

Quality portable experiences
Before I got my hands on a Switch, the best quality portable games I played were on Playstation Vita. Although the Vita features a vast library of incredible games, I never imagined another console would provide a more authentic experience yet the Switch definitely does. For the record, I’ve never played Doom before and only played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Playstation 3. v1d30chumz 192-162-82-130
When I booted up Doom on Switch, it absolutely blew me away. The campaign begins almost immediately and has you violently massacring hordes of demons right off the bat. Although I generally don’t play first-person shooters, I am thoroughly impressed with this release. The fact that I can play it on the go and it looks absolutely fantastic while doing so is a huge bonus considering I enjoy playing games while on an exercise bike and occasionally in bed.
Speaking of looking fantastic, it’s been a while since I played Skyrim but I was surprised by how well it holds up on Switch. The epic opening with the dragon wreaking havoc was as exciting as it was years ago. After actually starting the adventure, I honestly forgot that I was playing on a portable console. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to reliving some Skyrim memories as I continue my quest.
The complete packages
Both Skyrim and Doom include all of the previously released DLC in their corresponding Switch versions. Although this content is currently free in other releases of both games, it goes without saying that it’s great to be able to experience both games in their entirety without the need for season passes, etc. Doom includes every map and mode and all three expansions as well as the ability to unlock additional content such as guns and equipment through a nifty progression system which makes playing online as rewarding as it is fun.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is far more impressive with its collection of content. You not only get all three DLC expansions (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn), you can also use amiibo to unlock Zelda-themed items. Even if you don’t have any compatible amiibo, you can still unlock these treasures in-game. Finally, you can play with motion controls although doing so surely has limited appeal. However, it is cool to use motion controls while aiming your bow and arrow.
Some minor drawbacks
Of course, with newfangled high-performance consoles capable of superior graphical output, these Switch releases aren’t technically the best versions of these games. Although I don’t personally care about performance as much as many other gamers do, clearly you’ll be better off playing these on a high-end PC if you do. Performance aside, two aspects of these Switch releases made them tricky to play. First, both games can get pretty dark and when you try to play them in a well-lit room or outside, it can be very difficult to make out what’s happening onscreen. Last but not least, the controls in Skyrim take a lot of getting used to. Even after playing it for hours, I was still accidentally toggling between first-person and third-person mode and making menus pop up mid-game.
Even with their minor shortcomings, Skyrim and Doom feel right at home on Switch. My hat is off to Bethesda who clearly put a lot of effort into adapting these modern classics to Nintendo’s latest console. Have you played either of these two games yet? Here’s how to acquire the Hylian Shield, Champion Tunic and Master Sword for Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch.
Bethesda has released their latest main installment to The Elder Scrolls series, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, to every platform possible. The latest platform to receive the video game is Nintendo’s hybrid console, the Switch. Of course, being on a new console, especially being Nintendo, the development team did go back and add a fun little Easter Egg to the video game. If you own a Nintendo Switch copy then you can face against your foes with some Legend of Zelda gear.
How To Unlock The Legend of Zelda Gear Set
There are two real ways of gathering this Nintendo themed content in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Before we get too ahead of ourselves, the content available is a Hylian Shield, a Champion Tunic, and lastly, the Master Sword.
Amiibo Method
The first way to gain access to this content is by chance. By using The Legend of Zelda based Amiibo’s, players can scan them and gain random content. If you don’t get any of the gear set mentioned above, wait one day and try again. Repeat this process until you have everything offered by the developers.
Throat of the World Method
If you don’t own any of the Amiibo’s to use the first step then you can gather some of the gear set while playing the game. In order to find the Hylian Shield and Campion Tunic, players must travel to the peak of the Throat of the World, which is the highest mountain in the game, and locate a small cave which will hold chest with the two items. However, there will be Parrthurnax to deal with at the peak so if you’re just starting out in the game then we suggest leveling up a bit before you opt to take down the boss. Regardless, this method will not grant players the Master Sword. Unfortunately, the Master Sword is only acquired by going through the Amiibo method.
