Surface treatment: sanding
Such radiators require frequent painting, because scratches or chips remain on them.
If you change the color of the heater, you may need to repair the entire room. The process of renewing the color of the radiator is divided into several stages.
The first step involves preparing the surface. To begin with, thoroughly wash the battery, not forgetting to remove traces of dirt between the sections.
After removing the old paint layer. there are many special solutions for this purpose, which do not harm metal.The solution is applied to the heater with a dry brush and wrap the radiator with foil. After only one hour, the paint is removed with a spatula. After carefully sanding the surface of the battery with fine sandpaper and degrease with solvent. If rusted areas are present on the battery, they are treated to the metal.
Primer
A primer coat will complete the preparation of the product. then paint. The paint is applied to the surface with a nice even film. And the primer will help fight corrosion.
Painting
Paint for radiators must meet many requirements:
- Be resistant to abrasion and non-toxic;
- withstand temperatures over one hundred degrees, for example, having in its composition metallic powder is considered the most heat-resistant;
- must be suitable for painting metal surfaces;
- suitable for primers;
- Help protect the product from corrosion processes;
- last a long time, retaining color.
Acrylic enamels with organic solvents will give a glossy shine and consistent color to radiators. However, they have a serious disadvantage. a sharp unpleasant smell during the painting process.
Alkyd enamels are smooth and resistant to abrasion. However, they pungent smell is present not only during the application, but also for a certain period of time after the radiator is completely dry when heated.
Jar of heat-resistant alkyd enamel for radiators, 0.5 l, manufacturer Dali.
To prevent paint drips from spoiling already painted surface it is recommended to start painting from the top part of the radiator.
Important. Remember not to paint hot radiators.
Apply a second coat
When the first layer of paint dries (drying time depends on the quality of the paint, but on average it is twenty hours), apply another coat. This helps to hide irregularities on the radiator surface, increases the resistance of the painted surface to external influences and improves the aesthetic appearance of the radiator.
Note! Do not turn the radiator on until the paint is completely dry. Do not artificially accelerate the drying process. it can lead to negative consequences.
How to calculate the number of sections
To determine what size should be a cast-iron radiator, the following data are needed:
- heat output of one section. it is specified in the passport of the product;
- The volume of the heated room;
- climatic conditions;
- heat loss depending on the wall material, quality of insulation, number of windows and other parameters.
Such a calculation with reliable accuracy can only perform specialists. But we can use a simplified version, taking as a rule, that for heating of one square meter per square meter we will receive 15 sections.м. the area requires 100 W of thermal energy.
Example of calculation for heating a room with an area of 24 sq. m.м. Radiators MS-140-500 with a section capacity of 160 watts:
- For heating such an area requires 24 x 100 = 2400 W of thermal energy;
- dividing it by the power of one section, we obtain: 2400 : 160 = 15 sections;
- multiply this amount by the weight with the coolant and find out how much cast-iron radiator weighs: 15 x 8,55 = 128 kg.
This is a lot, so it is recommended to reduce the load on walls made of fragile materials by dividing the radiator into two 7-8 or three of 5 sections each.
Manufacturers of cast iron radiators
In most of the Russian market are domestic models. This is due to the fact that the cost of transporting cast iron radiators is a large proportion of its final cost. Of the main manufacturers we can highlight:
- ChAZ. Cheboksary Agregatny Zavod (Russia)
- Minsk Heating Equipment Factory (Belarus)
- Kiran (Ukraine)
- Viadrus (Czech Republic)
How much does a section of cast iron radiator weigh?
To calculate the heating system, you need to consider many different parameters. One of them is the weight of heating devices. For example, you want to install the classic cast-iron radiator, which consists of 4-10 sections. To calculate the weight of the entire heating system, you must first make a calculation with respect to one cast-iron battery, which will ensure the reliability of its installation.
Weight of standard heating devices
Both traditional and design copies are united by the material of manufacture, which is cast iron.
And now you can see everywhere serviceable classic radiators in the form of an accordion, installed:
- in schools and pre-school educational institutions;
- in outpatient departments and hospitals;
- in the premises of the housing stock. apartments, private houses, hostels;
- in public and state institutions.
Usually these are models MS-140 or MS-90, since in previous years, there were no other heating devices in mass production. Small series are represented by cast iron products NM-150, RKSH, Minsk. 1110 and others, but today they are not produced any more. So what is the weight of one section of the cast iron battery of the old design?? And in this case, there is no exact figure. This is explained by the fact that this value depends on the parameters of the section.
For example, a battery series MS-140 comes in two versions, depending on the axial spacing, which is 300 or 500 millimeters. When it comes to the model MS-140-300, then the average weight of the section is about 5.7 kilograms, and when it comes to the device MS-140-500, then 7.1 kilograms.
It is often possible to encounter a product of the MS-90 series, in which the weight of the cast-iron radiator section is 6.5 kilograms at a distance of 500 millimeters between the axes. The difference between the MC-90 and 140 models is the different depth of the sections.
Can the weight of these popular series radiators of 6.5, 5.7 and 7.1 kilograms be considered to be final? The answer is no, and there is an explanation. The fact that the current GOST 8690-94, which is the normative document governing the production of cast-iron batteries, indicates their basic dimensions.
Regarding how much a section of an old-style cast-iron radiator weighs, this standard specifies a specific weight of 49.5 kg/kW. This standard value applies to radiators, which are designed for use in heating systems with a coolant temperature not exceeding 150 degrees Celsius, with a maximum working pressure of 0.9 MPa (9 kgf/cm²).
In the manufacture of heating devices, manufacturers must ensure that products comply with these values, but how much does one section of cast iron battery, GOST does not regulate. As a result, the weight of radiators produced by different factories differs.
To date, the best known products of several industrial enterprises, which produce modifications of series MS-140 and devices of their own design. Among them: the Belarusian factory of heating equipment, the Russian “Dekart” and “Santekhilit” and others.
Calculation of real weight of radiators
Now let’s calculate what will be the weight and number of sections of cast iron heating batteries, providing a heat output of 2 kW. Let’s start with the old model. MS-140, whose power is 160 Watt from one fin. To get 2000 watts, you need to divide them by 160 watts, we get 12.5 sections, rounded up to 13 pcs. The total weight of the finished batteries will be 13 x 7.12 = 92.6 kg, and with water. 112 kg. It means that for each kilowatt of heat emission 112 / 2 = 56 kg of mass of radiator filled with the heat carrier.
Let’s calculate the specific weight of the above mentioned cast iron radiators in the same way and find out how far the technologies of manufacturing of such heaters have passed. Let’s enter the results in the table:
Radiator brand and model | Power of 1 fin, W | Number of sections, providing 2 kW of heat | weight with water, kg | What is the weight of the heat output of 1 kW, kg | Price of the radiator for 2 kW, y. е. |
Viadrus KALOR 500/70 | 70.3 | 29 | 139 | 69.5 | 582 |
Viadrus Bohemia 450/220 | 110 | 19 | 234 | 117 | 1487 |
Demir Dokum Nostalgia 500/200 | 163 | 13 | 155 | 77.5 | 679 |
Retro Style Anerli 560/230 | 189 | 11 | 223 | 111.5 | 2526 |
EXEMET Modern 600/100 | 102 | 20 | 100 | 50 | 640 |
EXEMET Classica 500/176 | 145 | 14 | 158 | 79 | 1076 |
Note. From the table below it is well seen how much modern cast iron for heating apartments and private homes. For comparison, the price of the MS-140 section is 8.3 у. е., and the whole radiator for 2000 W. 108 u. е. Such limit the number of homeowners who can buy designer products.
Based on the analysis we can draw such conclusions:
- Heat output of heating device does not practically depend on its mass, only on the surface area.
- Manufacturers make both massive and lighter models of cast iron batteries, which are attached to the walls.
- The heaviest cast iron radiators are made in the “retro” style, the lightweight ones in the “modern” style.
- If we compare the new heaters from different brands with “accordion” by the volume of the heating medium, it becomes clear that this indicator almost has not changed.
- Massiveness is provided due to the thickness of cast-iron walls. This means that the thinnest walls are in products of Turkish brands EXEMET and Demir Dokum, and the thickest. in the Russian manufacturer Retro Style.
- Note that the weight of cast iron affects the final price of the product. The heavier the product, the more expensive it is.
For your reference. Vintage models of heaters, which have a lot of weight, are usually offered in a floor version. That is, the 2 outermost sections are equipped with legs, and in the long cast iron heaters put additional supports in the middle. For installation of designer batteries, see
Characteristics of cast iron heating radiators
In the process of assembling the product sections are connected by spools, and joints are carefully sealed to avoid leakage. There are one-channel and two-channel sections.
Depending on how many sections the products consist of, they have different width and height. Before choosing the width of the radiator, analyze the area of the room requiring heating, the number of windows and the thickness of the walls.
So, if you need enhanced heating of the room, choose a radiator with a large number of sections. The height of the batteries has a range from thirty-five centimeters to one and a half meters.
Important! You should also pay attention to the depth of the product on this indicator depends on how the heater can match the interior of the room.
The depth of the radiator is from fifty to one hundred and forty centimeters. To mount a cast-iron radiator, you need strong brackets, which must be securely and carefully fixed in the wall. Batteries are hung under the window, placed so that they are not too far from the wall. However, there are models of batteries, which are equipped with legs.
How much does a section of the battery of the old type and modern
This radiator is too clumsy thing not everyone will be able to transport it alone, since only one section weighs 56 kilograms. That is why it is recommended to hire professionals to install or dismantle them.
Such a huge weight of the product is created by thick walls, but they keep the heat for a long period, and guarantee that the heater will serve for at least fifty years.
As for the non-standard cast iron radiators, the weight of one rib in them ranges from 3.7 to 14.5 kilograms.
The weight of a single fin from different manufacturers
GOST does not regulate the weight of one section of the device, so the products of different manufacturers differ slightly in weight.
Manufacturers of cast iron batteries in Nizhny Tagil offers us four-section radiators weighing 18.3 kg; seven-section. 31,5 kg.
The Belarusian factory produces nine types of cast iron products, in which the weight of one fin varies from 3.7 to 6.7 kg.
The manufacturer offers five models of cast iron radiators with a minimum weight of one section of 4.45 kg, with a maximum. 7.1 kg.
Cast iron advantages
If you do not consider how much a cast-iron radiator weighs, you can note a whole range of advantages of heating devices of this type, which include:
- resistance to corrosion;
- resistance to chemically aggressive environments. the material is undemanding to the characteristics of the coolant;
- durability;
- High indicators of thermal radiation. the greater the number of sections, the higher the heat output of the heating device.
SCRAPPING CAST IRON RADIATORS. How Much Do They Weigh?!?!
The appearance of standard cast iron radiators is simple and laconic, but today manufacturers offer antique radiators as well. The advantages of such models include a stylish and respectable appearance.
Different variants of radiators
Technical Characteristics
The power of the heating device is an indicator of its thermal efficiency. When calculating the heating system, the heating needs of the house are taken into account. It is important to know the power of 1 section of cast iron radiator to determine the size of batteries for each heated room. Incorrect calculations lead to the fact that the room will not be heated qualitatively, or vice versa. it will have to air it often, removing the excess heat.
The power of an ordinary standard cast iron radiator is 170 W. Cast-iron radiators withstand heating over 100 ° C and operate successfully at a working pressure of 9 atm. This allows using this type of products as a part of central and autonomous heating networks.
Modern models
Manufacturers offer lighter versions of gray cast iron batteries. If 1 unit weight of the Soviet radiator MS140 is 7.12 kg, then 1 section of the model Viadrus STYL 500 of Czech production weighs 3.8 kg, and its internal volume is 0.8 l. It means that a Czech radiator of 10 sections filled with the heating medium will have the mass of (3.8 0.8) × 10 = 46 kg. This is 40% less than the weight of filled battery MS 140, consisting of the same number of cells.
Cast iron heaters of a lighter model are also manufactured in Russia. The EXEMET brand also manufactures MODERN batteries, 1 section of which weighs 3.3 kg, and its inner volume is 0.6 liters. These tubular cast iron radiators are characterized by a relatively low heat output, which requires increasing the number of links. The radiators are designed for floor installation.
Cast iron vintage radiators are growing in popularity. These are floor models, made by the technology of artistic casting. Because of the voluminous complex patterns the weight of the cast iron radiator section is significantly increased, it reaches 12 and more kilograms.

Service life
Cast-iron radiators installed more than 100 years ago still work in the houses built before the Revolution. Modern heating devices made of this material are also designed for dozens of years of maintenance-free operation.
Durability is due to the strength of cast iron, resistance to heat and pressure. Cast iron radiators do not rust in the period when the coolant is drained from the network and the inner surface of the batteries is in contact with the air.
Dimensions
The weight of a cast iron radiator section depends on its height, configuration and wall thickness.
Manufacturers offer models with different characteristics:
- the depth of the battery is from 70 to 140 mm in the standard version;
- the link width varies from 35 to 93 mm; html
- the section volume ranges from 0.45 to 1.5 l depending on the dimensions;
- The height of the heater in the standard version. 370-588 mm;
- axle spacing. 350 or 500 mm.
