How to dry laundry in a dryer

Rubber-based mats

laundry, dryer

These mats are called mud guards. They are used as a doorway, as they absorb moisture well. Although they are machine-washable, it is not a good idea to dry them in a tumble dryer. The rubber backing of these mats cannot withstand the high temperatures of the dryer.

The mat can decompose, posing a fire hazard. For safety reasons do not put rubber-coated mats or even anything with rubber on it, such as sneakers with rubber soles in the dryer.

“20 minutes and done”: We study the features of automatic clothes dryers

Automatic dryers or dryers are rare guests, even on the pages of specialized publications about home appliances. There is always a lot of interest in washing machines, but less in dryers. Meanwhile, washing is not the last step in the process of returning things to cleanliness. After washing, even after a good spin in a modern washing machine, clothes still need to be dried. You can do it the old-fashioned way: hanging up on the balcony, in the bathroom or on the radiator, but there is another option to use the services of automatic dryer.

Yes, the dryer requires additional space for its installation. But at the same time, it saves your balcony or bathroom (and sometimes all other rooms) from getting hung up with wet things. Dryers are especially useful for families with growing children: there is usually a lot of laundry, often some things are not even dry, and other things are already washed, but there is no place to hang them.

Dryer reduces the drying time, it is the best option if you want to put on your favorite sweater (shirt, dress, skirt, pants), but it is wet, and there is no time to wait until it dries on the balcony. You just put your sweater in the dryer, activate the dryer and, no later than 20-30 minutes, you can put it on.

In general, of course, the dryer is not a matter of first necessity, but with it clearly more convenient. The presence of an automatic dryer in the house just increases the proverbial quality of life of its user, and for the improvement of this quality, we are now fighting the whole country! After all, if the apartment will be only basic necessities life becomes a hell. Washing, for example, will have to manually, clean too (Russian laws still do not prohibit automatic washing machine or vacuum cleaner to the luxury goods).

Before you buy a dryer, be sure to understand exactly where you will install it. Good for those who have a specially designated room for laundry and ironing. It will most likely be possible to install a dryer there as well. But most often there is no special room. Then to save space, you can consider installing appliances in a column: the dryer is installed on the washing machine by means of special fasteners.

How to Hang Dry Laundry FAST | Save Your Time & Your Clothes

Of course in this case one should take into account dimensions of all participants of the column, as, for example, to set the dryer (width and depth of them, as a rule, is about 60 cm, more miniature models are not many), on the narrow washing machine (depth from 33 cm) is hardly the right decision.

After the question on acquisition of the dryer is solved positively, it is necessary to define what kind of dryer will suit you. We are talking here about drum-type tumble dryers. In these cases, things are placed in a special drying drum (similar to the drum of a washing machine), the drum rotates, warm air is supplied to things and drying takes place.

There are also dryers that are noticeably larger in size, but since the drying process in them is static (things are stationary) they may be regarded as somewhat more functional. In fact, the things of delicate fabrics, hats, shoes, outerwear can be dried statically, without the risk of deformation. Some modern tumble dryers, however, have already caught up with tumble dryers in terms of functionality.

Drum dryers, in their turn, are divided according to the principle of moisture removal: into condensation and extraction. In simple words, the difference is that in condensation, the warm air that takes moisture from drying things goes into a special condensation chamber. There it cools down, the condensate is either immediately discharged into the sewer or goes into a container designed for it (later it must be emptied by the user).

6 Things You Should Know About Your Dryer! (Clean My Space)

In extraction models, the moist air is immediately removed into the room ventilation system (removing it simply into the room is not a better option). Of course, the machine must be connected to a ventilation system for this. The option of air outlet through the window is possible, but in any case it is not too convenient, because it narrows the range of places in the apartment or house, where the drying unit can be installed, adds trouble directly at the installation.

Dryers also differ in type of drying. Some are timed dryers: the drying time is set by the user (or it is factory-set for the various drying programs) and the machine shuts down when the time has elapsed.

There are models that can dry to a certain residual humidity. Sensors inside the machine detect the humidity in the laundry and the appliance knows when it’s time to finish drying. In this case, the user is free to set the desired degree of residual moisture. For example, if the item is still to be ironed, it should be wetter than if it is to be put away in the closet. For the user’s convenience, the degree of residual moisture is indicated in the dryers by clear definitions: Under the iron, In the cupboard, etc.п.

Usually in a modern dryer, the user simply needs to select the type of fabric. The machine dries clothes according to factory settings. for example, jeans can be tumble dried at a relatively high temperature and many delicates should be dried without heat at all.

There are also models which have programs for drying specific items such as shirts, jeans, jackets, etc.д. These are again preset factory drying algorithms. There are models in which you can dry woollens, usually in a specially installed basket that allows woollens to remain still (the basket can also be used to dry shoes, other things, so that not only drying cabinets are suitable for this).

In many automatic dryers, clothes can be not only dried, but also simply aired out to get rid of dust, wool, bad smell, in general to refresh. This is usually done by activating the corresponding program.

The dryer drum is the most important element of a dryer. Its characteristics have a lot to do with drying. That’s why we have to dwell on it in detail.

The most common dryer drum is made entirely of stainless steel. It is a durable, tough, smooth material, which is quite suitable for this kind of use. It is possible to meet drums with a special DuraFinish coating. It is a wear-resistant layer, used, by the way, in various spheres (e.g. many laptops have it covered with touchpads).

Next is the operating mode of the drum. It is better if the drum in the dryer will rotate constantly and in one direction. It is necessary that inside the drum there are special grippers for things (blades, ribs). They promote active agitation of things and create a certain trajectory of movement most suitable for quality drying. In addition, this mode of rotation, in contrast to the mode in which the drum rotates intermittently and reversibly, allows less wear and tear on the motor.

As for the drum rotation speed, it usually varies in dryers. Because different types of fabric require different approaches. Usually the user can choose: to dry jeans at a speed of 100 rpm, or, for example, some more delicate knitwear at a speed of 50-70 revolutions. Sometimes a certain drum rotation speed is part of the drying program algorithm set at the factory.

The amount of clothes that can be dried at one time depends on the volume of the drum. A drum capacity of at least 100 liters is highly desirable. There are usually 5-7kg of clothes in the dryer. There are models for 9-10kg and small models for 3-4kg. Remember that the dryer drum must not be overfilled, and that there must be sufficient space for air circulation. Otherwise, the laundry will bunch up and dry badly.

Controls. Most tumble dryers are controlled electronically. On the panel may be rotary electronic programmers (for selecting the type of drying, the program, time), various buttons (activation of additional modes, setting the delayed start timer). Some models have a display that shows basic data about the drying process: stage, program, time to completion, etc.д.

Many models monitor the condition of the items in the drum even after the main drying process is finished. If the user does not take the cloths out at once, the machine loosens the laundry with several drum revolutions, preventing it from creasing.

If there are small children in the house be sure to buy a dryer with a control panel lock. There should also be a feature that stops the machine all the time if the door is opened, or if the door locks while the machine is in operation. It would be good if the dryer was designed with a drum light. It provides additional comfort when loading and unloading things.

It goes without saying that every single dryer model has its own specific characteristics. Additional programs, opportunities, exemplified by the manufacturer’s know-how (for example, the Electrolux Iron Aid EDI97170W dryer has a function of steam treatment of things). This material is based on points that can be said to be common to most dryers.

The main manufacturers of dryers, whose products are presented in Russia: ARDO, ASKO, Beko, Bosch-Siemens, the group Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gorenje, Indesit, Kuppersbusch, Miele, Smeg. Minimal We are talking in particular about free-standing model with ventilated drying type ARDO VDNC7SSW, with a capacity of up to 7 kg of things. Energy efficiency class of this model is C (in stores nowadays you can find dryers with energy efficiency classes from A to D).

Important washer-dryer functions

The problem of drying clean laundry is especially acute in the fall, when everything in the apartment dries poorly. And hanging laundry adds even more moisture. In order not to turn the apartment into a laundry and not to hang the laundry in the bath, the corridor and on the radiator, it is more convenient to install a dryer.

What is comfortable to dry in a dryer?

A tumble dryer is not only kind to clothes, but also saves time, because the clothes can be dried without ironing. And if you love soft and fluffy towels, you can’t do without a dryer.

Let’s tell you what features you need to pay attention to when choosing a dryer to give your clothes less wear and longer beautiful look.

Sensory detection of the humidity in the laundry

To avoid over-drying or uneven drying, special sensors automatically measure the humidity of the laundry and select the ideal conditions for drying: temperature, steam, and drum rotation time. As soon as the laundry is dry, the machine switches itself off and prevents drying out. In combination with the selected drying program, even delicate fabrics will be gently dried.

Steam drying

Shirts, jackets, pants and even synthetics are steamed before the drying cycle is completed. It makes your laundry soft so you don’t have to spend time ironing and steaming. And most importantly, it does not harm the fabric, and for delicate fabrics uses a low temperature mode. Steam freshens up clothes that do not need to be washed.

Recommended dryers: SIEMENS WT 45W560 | ASKO T408CD | Bosch WTW85561OE

A special drum surface

A good tumble dryer not only dries your clothes, it also takes care of them. ASKO utilizes a Soft Drum /b> drum, which increases the airflow around the laundry, thus increasing the drying effect. Circular indentations with bevelled edges provide a shock-absorbing effect, reducing wear and tear on fabrics. Gorenje has developed WaveActive drum with wave peorization and 3D fiber softening fins, which cuts down the wrinkles and dries the laundry gently.

Heat pump

Heat pump dryers do not have a heating element, so they save energy costs during the drying process.

It’s all about the special air circulation: unlike classic machines with condensers, heat pump machines do not let the warm air out, but keep it inside for drying. The drying time in heat pump machines may be 3-5 minutes longer, but you will save twice as much energy.

Programs for different types of fabrics

So you don’t have to guess at what conditions to dry your shirts or woolen Plaid, leading manufacturers offer special programs, from down jackets to silk. In addition, you can select the degree of drying, and in some models you can dry everything in 40 minutes. ASKO offers programs for sports clothes and an airing mode to freshen things up or remove dust from stuffed toys. Electrolux machines with the DelicateCare program preserve and restore the water repellency of clothes better than air drying.

New technology in dryers dries clothes gently, ending the cycle before the laundry is too dry, making ironing easier or even eliminating it altogether. Special sensors detect the type of fabric and the right temperature and drying time. It’s hard to imagine an even more attentive attitude to your favorite clothes. Plus, modern dryers don’t consume much energy and can be placed anywhere in your home.

How to choose a dryer for laundry: we help to determine the criteria

A separate dryer for laundry is, perhaps, one of the most obscure household appliances on the modern Russian market. While a washing machine has long been standard even in small apartments, finding a separate drying machine can still be difficult. Residents of the post-Soviet space prefer to use a combined washer and dryer or to dry laundry the old-fashioned way, hanging it on a folding metal dryer.

Objective reasons for such user behavior, if you think about it, there may be several. Here are the most obvious of them.

Why not?

Unwillingness to spend money on expensive equipment is a common sense argument. Judge for yourself: according to Yandex.Market, at the time of writing this article:

  • The cheapest automatic washer costs about 10 thousand;
  • The cheapest automatic washing machine with dryer is about 18 thousand;
  • Among dryers, there is only one offer for 14 thousand, all others start at 22 thousand.

Thus, if we ignore minor fluctuations, it turns out that a cheap dryer is more expensive than a cheap washer-dryer with a drying function. Seems like a paradox, but the facts are stubborn thing.

On the other hand a usual electric towel dryer (which represents, roughly speaking, a heating element hidden in a metal pipe) will cost on average about 15 thousand, although in its drying capacity it definitely loses even to the most primitive dryer.

Saving on electricity is a much weaker argument. One drying cycle will require an investment of about 0.7-1.5 kW·Which, of course, is not much (especially compared to the price of the machine itself).

Space saving

A tumble dryer is about the size of an ordinary washing machine. Well, since the washing machine in our country is traditionally installed in the bathroom (and not in the kitchen, as is customary in many countries), it is not surprising that you can not always find space for a second appliance with the same dimensions.

On the other hand, many dryers allow for installation directly on the washing machine (on top, with a special adaptor), and the usual folding dryer, which can probably be found in every home with hanging laundry would take about two square meters of living space. In most cases, if there is room for a washing machine, there is also room for a dryer.

Having washing machines with a dryer

Of course, when there is a lack of space, the most obvious solution seems to be buying a washing machine with drying function (such machines can be found quite often). However, let us not forget that in this case, drying is a secondary task, and therefore not all washing machines cope with this task well enough. In addition, most machines are capable of drying far less laundry at one time than they can from ½ to ⅔ of the maximum load of the drum. In practice, this means that running a washer-dryer program will make you do laundry about twice as often.

Thus, besides a quite natural desire to avoid extra costs, the only arguments against buying a dryer can be only inertia of mind (we dried clothes on a rope all our life and will continue to do so), small size of the bathroom (for example, if you had to buy a small-sized washer to save space, to be installed under the sink) or a mistake in planning the room (the space above the washer is already occupied by a cabinet or shelves, and there is no room for the dryer).

Curious observation

As a rule, the overwhelming number of people, criticizing such appliance as a separate dryer and proving that it is useless and nobody needs it, willingly admit that they have never used it in their life and their criticism is based on the things, which are already clear to everybody, i.e. it has exclusively speculative character.

But among people who already have this device in the household, the number of those who would be willing to give it up is negligible.

And if you do?

As for choosing a suitable drying machine, not too many potential difficulties and problems are foreseen. Almost all modern dryers do a decent job, and the difference between them lies mainly in the convenience of operation and the cost of electricity bills. Let’s take a look at the models on the market today, and understand how they are similar, and how they differ.

Dimensions and installation method

The vast majority of commercially available tumble dryers are freestanding or partially built-in appliances. Many of them allow for installation in a column on top of a conventional washing machine. Their dimensions are roughly the same as a free-standing, full-sized washing machine (about 85×60×60 cm). There are also more compact models. usually with reduced depth.

What this means in practice? You most likely will not be able to buy a dryer that is fully integrated into the kitchen set: you can’t cover the front panel with the fronts. On the other hand, if you are not uncomfortable with the look of the dryer in the kitchen, many models allow installation under the countertop, and therefore do not necessarily look for space in the bathroom. Despite the obviousness of this fact, we remind: the vast majority of dryers do not need to connect to the sewer, they can be placed in any place where there is a socket.

Installing the dryers for washing machines is carried out with special adapters, usually plastic adapters through which dock and fasten devices to each other. Such an adapter can be included in the delivery of the dryer or sold as an additional accessory for the washing machine. Therefore, it is better to worry about its availability in advance, at the stage of selecting a suitable model.

It should also be remembered that there is no fundamental prohibition on the installation of a washing machine and dryer in different places. For example, the washing machine in the bathroom and the dryer in the kitchen. Or a washing machine in the kitchen and dryer in the hallway. It’s just less convenient, t. к. Washed and wrung out laundry will have to be carried to another place.

Device

Despite the fact that if you want, you can buy the most real drying cabinet (in which you can hang the clothes directly on the hanger), the vast majority of dryers on the market are drum-type devices. What does it mean?? Laundry in dryers is placed in the drum (just like in washing machines). However, the sides of such a drum will be smooth, and the far wall (end) will be peorized. The air blows out of the holes at the end, and the smooth sides of the drum are used to smooth the laundry.

The air passes through special filters during the operation, which must be cleaned from time to time from laundry particles. This task, however, is not particularly difficult.

Fan or condensation dryer

Modern tumble dryers are available in two types, ventilated or condensation drying. The difference lies primarily in the way of neutralization of humid air. The ventilated type driers blow the humid air outdoors or into the ventilation system through a special tube. It is clear that in an enclosed space without the possibility of withdrawal of excess humid air, such a dryer cannot be used.

Condensation type dryers collect excess water in a special tank that must be emptied periodically. Such a machine can be installed almost anywhere there is an outlet.

Finally, some models allow connection to a sewage system, which means that excess moisture can be drained automatically. Convenient and practical, but imposes some restrictions on the place of installation.

A ventilated dryer will, on average, cost somewhat less than condensing models, but in most cases will spend more electricity.

Heat pump

The most modern dryers are equipped with a heat pump, a special device for cooling the air that has passed through the drum with the laundry. In other words, essentially a compact refrigeration unit.

In traditional dryers, the air is cooled by the temperature difference with the air in the room, which has not been found to be efficient enough. Having a special cooling unit (a compressor pumping refrigerant) at first glance seems to incur additional electricity costs, but experience has shown that it is more economical and that the overall electricity consumption for drying is lower.

The fact is that the heat pump cooling circuit not only removes the excess heat from the air at the time of condensation, but at the same time heats the next batch of air that is just about to enter the drum. The electric energy is thus consumed only once, but does useful work twice working for cooling in one part of the machine and heating in the other part. In our opinion, this is an example of a very elegant engineering solution. Despite the fact that the machines with a heat pump will cost more, in our opinion, it is not worth saving in this case.

Energy consumption

Since we are talking about energy consumption, it is worth recalling the different energy efficiency classes. These classes range from the best A to the worst C. The latter, however, can no longer be found on today’s market, while the once best class A has long ceased to be the best, giving way to classes A, A and A. As we can see, as the development of household appliances appear more and more efficient solutions, which is reflected in the form of additional advantages, which are added to the A class.

If you’re too lazy to sort it out, just remember that the more pluses you see after the letter A, the more energy efficient your machine will be. Otherwise, we recommend to refer directly to the instructions of the device, in which the developers will explain in detail how much electricity will be spent on a particular drying program. And in some cases, they will even calculate the average electricity consumption for the year of use, saving you from having to arm yourself with a calculator.

Managing

As with a washing machine, the dryer has a set of different programs, aimed at different tasks and most suitable for certain types of fabrics. Each program corresponds to a specific temperature, drying time and the recommended volume of laundry (usually measured in kilograms). For example, you could have 6kg of terry towels, 4kg of jeans, 2.5kg of shirts or 1kg of wool clothes dry in the same machine.

The availability of certain programs, of course, is largely a matter of taste. The most popular programs are to be found in all dryers without exception. But if you have any personal needs and requirements, we would recommend to pay attention to the availability of appropriate programs in advance. Maybe it is you who wants gentle drying or a fluff mode especially?

Those who often deal with wool products, you should pay attention to the availability of the dryer (but then, of course, also the washing machine) Woolmark certificate. This certificate means that the machine has been tested for the gentle washing and drying of wool apparel.

The interface should be chosen according to your personal tastes first of all. For some people, a simple control panel with a few mechanical buttons may be enough. Others will want to see a display that shows the time until the drying process is complete, and they will also want the machine to be equipped with special sensors for the moisture of the laundry. The same applies to optional extras such as interior lighting, warning buzzers, etc. п.

Choosing the right tumble dryer is a straightforward task. Especially if you are prepared and have answered a few basic questions beforehand.

The first and most important of these is how to set up the appliance. Do you want to put it on top of the washer-dryer or separately?? Will it require a sewer connection or air outlet to the ventilation system?? Answers to these questions will allow you to exclude obviously unsuitable models from consideration and narrow down the choice to a reasonable minimum. At the same stage, you will most likely be able to determine whether a ventilated or condensing model is right for you.

The next step is the need to decide on the price, which is directly affected by factors such as the presence or absence of heat pump, a set of available automatic programs, as well as additional (optional) functions and, of course, markup for the brand.

After coming to a reasonable compromise on these issues, the choice is likely to narrow down to 3-5 models, and make the final decision will not be difficult at all.

Features of connection to communications

Today, installations for drying laundry are no less relevant and in demand in the household than automatic washing machines. They are especially convenient in apartments of high-rise buildings, where there are no balconies and loggias, and have to dry things in the apartment after washing. How to install and connect the dryer depends on its model. There are three types of units:

  • Exhaust type. Supposed to be connected to a domestic ventilation system or to the exhaust pipes to the outside with a turbo exhaust hood. The laundry is placed in a special cabinet and dried by blowing hot air which is then blown out through a corrugated hose.
  • Condensation type. A more convenient variant, since all that is needed for operation is a connection to the electricity grid. The rotating drum is pressurized by heated air which forces the moisture out of the laundry and then passes through a special heat exchanger. The air flows therein cooled and drains as condensate into a separate plastic container, the water from which is removed after each drying process.
  • Evaporation type. Some models require a connection to a drain. The principle of operation is similar to the previous option. the hot air removes moisture from the laundry in a rotating drum. The difference is the exhaust air is not cooled, but on the contrary, heated in a special evaporator. The condensate formed from the vapors then drains through a drain hose into the sewer or into a built-in tank, depending on the model.

As a rule, dryers with an extractor and drain into the drain are larger, but they also dry a greater amount of laundry. Such units are considered stationary. the need to connect to the utilities limits the choice of installation sites. Condensing models with a plastic tank for collecting water is much more mobile. they are installed not only on the floor or in a built-in cabinet, but also on a washing machine in the form of a pen. They are very popular among owners of small apartments, because there is no need to reequip the mowing line of communications to run them.

These models save space in the room and do not require output hoses and pipes for the liquid.

How to properly dry clothes in a dryer

Dryers can not yet be called a popular appliance, many prefer to dry clothes the old-fashioned way. hanging them on the balcony or in the bathroom. But just try this modern and truly ingenious invention of mankind once and you will realize how convenient and practical this device is.

A quality dryer, like the Gaggenau WT 260100, dries nearly all materials, bringing your clothes to a perfect condition. not wet, but not too dry, and many things do not even need ironing!

What can be dried??

Gaggenau WT 260100 dries practically everything: from blouses to down jackets, from jeans to blankets. 14 modes total, so the main thing is to choose the right one. Even wool can be dried in it, thanks to a special mode and basket, it does not deform and does not shrink.

But there are fabrics that should not be processed in this appliance:

  • superfine fabrics such as tulle, cambric, etc.д.;
  • Things with sharp metal decorations (but they also need to be washed carefully;
  • Fine hand embroidered items.

How to Dry Your Clothes using a clothes dryer.

How many items can be put in the drum?

This machine is designed to load from 1 to 8 kg of clothes. It’s important to follow these recommendations and not to run an overfilled or totally empty appliance.

It is important that the weight of dry clothes is taken into account, that is, assess them before washing.

Remember that one rule applies to drying: the more items in the drum, the crumper the laundry will be at the end. So if you want to keep the ironing to a minimum or not at all, don’t put too much pressure on the machine.

How to prepare the laundry

After washing, the laundry should be arranged according to the degree of moisture and the desired degree of drying. And then there are several preparatory procedures:

  • All laundry must be straightened out without being placed in the drum as a clump;
  • pillowcases and duvet covers should be dried separately to prevent small items from getting caught in them
  • make sure that no foreign objects. metal, plastic, etc get into the laundry.д., Drying takes place at high temperature, so any little things can ruin both the laundry and the appliance;
  • button, hook, and zipper fasteners, tie up straps and thongs.

Thanks to the anti-crumpling cycle available in the appliance, which completes the drying process, you will get clothes out of the machine that do not need to be ironed.

As you can see, a dryer not only frees you from having to contemplate hanging laundry on strings, it also saves you time!

A dryer becomes an invaluable tool for drying our laundry, especially at this time of year when bad weather and cold makes it impossible to dry clothes in the sun. This is why it is important to know how to use the machine, with the right answers to the questions “How can I use it??” and “Which program should I choose??”.

First of all, to avoid damage to laundry, you must learn to read labels, separate items of clothing according to the fibers of the fabric and pay attention to the different drying temperatures required for each fabric. If you follow these simple rules, you can dry each type of fabric in the cycle that suits it best: your clothes will last longer and remain in perfect condition.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is using the same drying cycle over and over again out of habit or laziness. Take advantage of all the functions the machine has to offer: you’ll know how to dry each garment most efficiently, and you’ll find it easier to choose the best program to save time and money. Use the Delicate cycle to dry fabrics such as wool or silk safely, and take advantage of Steam to save time and avoid ironing clothes and linens. When setting the drying cycle, don’t underestimate the importance of temperature: it not only affects how clothes dry, but also how mites and bacteria are killed.
