Today it is rare that any woman can do without a hair dryer. But unfortunately, to find a good hair dryer now. a very difficult task, they often fail. Fortunately, thanks to its primitive design, the repair of the hair dryer with their own hands is not particularly difficult, even at home.

Almost all hair dryers have a similar design. It consists of a body in which the other parts are located. the switch, the motor, combined with the impeller and the heater. Power enters the device through the mains cord, then it goes to the switch, which has several working positions. From it the voltage goes to the motor and the heating element.

As the motors, used in hair dryers. low-voltage (designed for voltages from 12 to 36 V), DC, and in our network we have 220-250 V AC, the current supplied to the motor, passes through a special spiral located in the heating element. After the passage of the spiral, the voltage is reduced to the required voltage, but the current remains alternating, so it goes to the diode bridge, where it is rectified and only then comes to the motor, forcing it to rotate the impeller.

Heating element is a nichrome wire, twisted into a spiral and fixed to a frame of heat-resistant material. There can be several such spirals in the heating element. This is necessary in order to be able to change the temperature of the air flow, switching modes.

This dryer is also designed with two degrees of thermal protection. The first is implemented as a thermostat, standing in the gap of the supply wire and located at the outlet of the heater. It opens the circuit when reaching a certain temperature, turning off the device. After cooling it closes the circuit, restoring the performance of the device. If the thermostat for some reason did not work, and the temperature continues to rise, the second degree is activated in the form of standing in the gap circuit thermal fuse, which burns out, and the device turns off. Unlike the thermostat, the fuse is a disposable part and must be replaced when triggered.

The principle of operation of the hair dryer is simple as hell: the air through the intake holes is sucked in by the impeller and runs through the heating element, where its temperature increases to the level set by the selected operating mode. Then the flow of hot air passes through the nozzle, and falls on your hair.

Thanks to a simple design and the fact that it appeared quite a long time ago (in the 1950s), over the years of operation has accumulated a huge number of statistics on the failure, and all the possible problems of the hair dryer is now well known. You don’t have to do a lot of diagnostics and repairs, all together will take you maximum 1 hour.

For simplicity and convenience, let’s make a list of faults / troubleshooting methods, which we will refer to during diagnostics. In brackets is the designation of the elements in the circuit diagram. If there is nothing after #xAB;/#xBB; then you need to replace the defective part with a working one.

Breakage or short circuit in a power cord / replace a cord, or having cut out a problem site, connect a wire and well isolate it.

Capacitor (C1) or resistor (R1) breakdown /.

Faulty thermostat (F2) or fuse (F1) /.

Failure of the cold air button (SB1) / replace it with a working one. When replacing, make sure that this button is normally closed and open. If you don’t need it, you can disconnect the wires from it and connect them together.

Rectifier diode breakdown (VD1. VD4) /.

Faulty smoothing capacitors (C2, C3) /.

Hair wrapped and wedged on motor shaft / cut hair off with office knife or scalpel. Be careful not to damage the impeller.

The grease on the motor bearings has dried out / flush them out with solvent in a syringe with a needle, and lubricate the bearings with liquid silicone grease.

Open circuit in nichrome coils (H1. H3) / if the breakage is not visually noticeable, disassemble and carefully scrape with a knife the terminals through which it connects to the wires and put them back together. If it does not help or the breakage is visible to the naked eye. replace the coil with one of similar resistance.

Shorted coils (H1. H3) with each other / if the frame of the heater is intact, change the coils for a new one, if you find a damaged frame and you do not have the same to replace. postpone the repair until better times or throw out the hair dryer.

Heating element is badly soiled / disconnect it from the cables and soak it in a detergent solution. After 2 hours, scrub with a toothbrush, rinse under running water and reattach. Do not forget to dry it thoroughly before installing it in your hair dryer.

Fan impeller is destroyed / replace with a suitable impeller. Glue or solder won’t help here because you can’t align the impeller well and it will break quickly because of the vibrations.

Note that all items in the list are in order of diagnosis.

In order not to puzzle over how to disassemble the hair dryer, you need to prepare for it in advance. The manufacturers are trying to complicate the disassembly of their products, using screws with non-standard (fork, star, triangle) notches and hiding them under stickers and plugs. Before you start disassembly make sure that you have a screwdriver with interchangeable bits and that the kit contains the bits you need.

Before unscrewing the screws, remove all plugs and stickers from the body. Once you have unscrewed all the screws, you can try to gently separate the halves of the case, using a plastic card (you can use any object that is convenient for you. It is important that it be plastic. Metal can damage disconnectable parts). If the halves do not yield, make sure that you have not missed any screws that are well hidden. If you are sure that there are no countersunk screws, use a little more force to release the latches that hold the case.

Now let’s look at the repair steps you will need to take. Again, make a list, but this time first the symptoms of the fault, followed by #xAB;/#xBB; the item numbers from the list of faults that need to be checked. Check the items in the order in which they are listed.

The hair dryer works when it is stationary, but as soon as you pick it up it starts malfunctioning / 1, 4, 11, 12.

When you plug in the network, the circuit breakers at the apartment inlet are triggered / 1, 2.

The fan is heating but it is not working, there is no airflow / 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

Only cold air is coming, other modes have no effect / 4, 5, 11, 12.

The impeller slowly spins, the airflow is weak and the hair dryer makes a lot of noise / 8, 9.

When working, it smells burned, but everything else is normal / 13.

Strong vibrations and noises are audible, but the airflow is not or is very weak / 14.

It also happens that the hair dryer when you plug it in does not show any signs of life. In this case we need to make a full diagnosis.

For this we need a multimeter, you can not do without it. Before starting the operation switch off the power supply and switch the multimeter to the diode check mode (in this mode a short circuit is detected and a buzzer sounds).

First check the power cord by testing each lead from the plug to the capacitor C1, then proceed to check elements C1 and R1. None of them should be shorted. Then check thermal fuse F1 and thermostat F2. They are normally short-circuited, open circuit indicates a fault. Next check the switch SW1. Switch it to the hottest air mode and wire the leads to each other. If there are no breaks and no contact loss, then there is nothing wrong with the switch. Also make sure that L1 and L2 are not open.

Move on to the rectifier diodes VD1. VD4 and diode VD5. They should only ring in one direction. If a diode current flows in both directions, or is open, it is faulty. After checking the smoothing capacitors C2 and C3 (their short circuit indicates their failure) you can start testing the motor M1, for that switch your multimeter to the resistance measurement mode. If there is a breakage or short circuit between the motor leads (the minimum resistance for such motors is 5 ohms). the motor is defective.

Now you can reassemble the coils H1. H3. When checking them, do not touch the spirals themselves with your feeler gauges, but the wires in the connecting terminals, otherwise you may not see the bad contact in the terminals themselves. If the resistances of the coils do not differ much from those in the schematic, you are OK. A lower resistance value indicates a short circuit between the coils and a higher resistance value indicates a bad contact in the terminals. An endless resistance indicates a breakage.

It remains only to check the SB1 button (it has to be shorted if it is operational) and the diagnostics may be considered over. Now you need to troubleshoot the found faults using the methods from the list of faults. After that you only need to reassemble the hair dryer by performing the disassembly steps in reverse order and that’s it, the repair is complete.

Test the hair dryer by plugging it in. Then look at the situation:. all the functions work fine, it means you have done everything right;. the hair dryer doesn’t work as it should or it does not turn on at all, look for the error and fix it after you have found it.

How the machine works

Any hair dryer has a motor with an impeller and a heater. The impeller sucks in air from one side of the hair dryer, then it blows on the heater and comes out already hot from the other side. The hair dryer also has a mode switch and elements to protect the heater from overheating.

In household hair dryers fan assembled on the collector DC motor, designed for a voltage of 12, 18, 24 or 36 volts (sometimes there are motors running on alternating voltage of 220 volts). Sometimes a thermal fuse is also used as additional protection. It is disposable and burns out when a certain temperature is exceeded, after which it must be replaced.

Most domestic hair dryers have a circuit similar to the one above. Let’s take a closer look at it. the heater is represented by three spirals: H1, H2 and H3. The H1 coil is used to power the motor, the H2, H3 are used only for heating. In this case the hair dryer has three modes of operation. In the upper position of SW1 the circuit is de-energized. In position 1, the hair dryer operates at minimum power: the power is supplied through the diode VD5, which cuts off one half-wave of alternating voltage, only one heating coil H2 is on (not at full power), the motor rotates at low speed. In position 2, the hair dryer operates at medium power: diode VD5 is shorted, the circuit receives both half-waves of alternating voltage, the coil H2 operates at full power, the motor rotates at nominal speed. In position 3 the hair dryer works at maximum available power as the H3 coil is connected. When the cool button is pressed, heating spirals H2, H3 are switched off and the motor continues to run. Diodes VD1-VD4 are half-wave rectifier. Inductance coils L1, L2 and capacitors C2, C3 reduce the level of interference that inevitably occurs when using a collector motor. F1, F2 are fuses and thermostat.

  • In position 2 hair dryer operates at average power: diode VD5 is shorted, both half-waves of alternating voltage are fed into the circuit, coil Н2 operates at full power, the motor rotates at nominal speed.
  • In position 3, the hair dryer works at maximum available power because H3 coil is connected. When the cool button is pressed the heating coils H2, H3 are switched off and the motor continues to run.
  • Diodes VD1-VD4 are half-wave rectifier. The inductor coils L1, L2 and capacitors C2, C3 reduce the level of noise that inevitably occurs when using a collector motor. F1, F2 are the thermostat and the thermostat.
