I have to confess, I am not a big fan of on-ear headphones. My ears will throb after wearing on-ear headphones for longer than 30 minutes. I found out about this right after I bought a pair of on-ear Bose headphones from my friend. Needless to say, he wouldn’t give me my money back. I need new friends. Anyways, I was really surprised at how comfortable the padding is on the earpieces. I used them all day, walking around the lab and sitting at my desk. The secure fit ensured that no noise leaked out of the headphones, which is great because I’ve been binge listening to Nickelback. I hate headphones that leak music because I listen to embarrassing music constantly.

The Major II headphones comes with aptX technology which uses a unique, compression algorithm to produce CD-like quality audio over Bluetooth. This is huge for Bluetooth devices which have been known for lower sound quality due to its limited bandwidth.

The bass absolutely slaps coming from the 40 mm dynamic drivers. The full-sounding lows create a warm sound experience, perfect for listeners who need that extra oomph from the bass. I love Pound Cake by Drake and listening to this song on the Major II’s did not disappoint. I found the vocals and highs to be clear giving it a detailed sound.

These headphones can get loud. I turned the volume up to 100% and did not hear any sound distortion. However, the bass can get a bit overwhelming but that could be because I prefer a balanced sound rather than a bass-focused one.

Usage

I work in a research lab so Bluetooth headphones are a staple in my life. I stopped using wired headphones because I would always get it caught on something and either knock it over or get minor whiplash. I replaced my usual Bose Bluetooth headphones with these for the past couple of weeks and I got to say it hasn’t been a difficult transition.

The battery on the Major II’s is absolutely absurd. It claims you can get around 30 hours of playtime. I stopped keeping track after 30 hours, but I think I was getting in the ballpark of around 40-45 hours. I used these headphones at 60-70% volume and they lasted a week and a half of frequent use before I had to charge it.

My favorite part of the headphones was the brass knob to control music. It’s such a simple function that’s neglected from many other headphone makers. The unique in-line controls are intuitive and have an array of functions for only one button. Answering and ending phone calls are also done through the brass knob simply by pressing it down.

Another great feature is the use of the 3.5mm jack on the left earpiece. You can plug in your audio cable if you run out of battery. or let a friend plug in their 3.5 mm cable and listen to music with you. Not a bad excuse to get your crush to sit close to you, wink wink.

I would recommend getting a case for these headphones. The lightweight design makes these headphones less durable than others.

Marshall Major II is my second headphones from the English company. My first product was the Marshall Monitor headphones and they were among the most impressive headphones I’ve ever tested. Therefore, I was really glad that Marshall started making wireless headphones to reach a new consumer base. Let’s check out the Marshall Major II Bluetooth On-Ear Headphones.

Design Features

The build quality of the headphones is disappointing and it is really not up to Marshall’s standard. I even feel it’s too cheap and flimsy, especially at the price tag of over 100.

On the plus side, the headphones are very lightweight. The on-ear design is comfortable and unlike the Marshall Monitor, I can wear the Major II for more than an hour without any unpleasant feeling. Another advantage is that the earcups can be folded inwards for better storage and transportation.

Inside the box, you can also find a nice detachable double-ended coil cord and a charging USB cable. The headphones still have a vinyl finish all around but it doesn’t look as durable as their high-end options. The hinges don’t feel steady and they can be broken anytime, I really don’t think the headphones could survive a drop.

The battery life of the Major headphones is amazing, these are one of a few wireless headphones that could last over 30 hours on a single charge.

My favorite feature is the golden control knob on the left earcup. You can press on it to play/pause or rotate it to adjust volume; this is the first time I see this implementation on headphones.

Audio Quality

Again, I’m not really a fan of Marshall headphones’ sound signature. My previous Marshall Monitor headphones were bass-heavy ones and the Major II has very similar sonic characteristics. This is not bad by any mean since I know that many people love the rich and full sound. I actually quite enjoyed using the headphones when listening to some EDM tracks but my ears could get fatigued very soon.

As compared to the recently Audio-Technica headphones that I tested, the Major II is like an opposite. If you prefer an airy and open sound, you should avoid the headphones at all cost. However, if you are a basshead, these are actually a very good choice. I appreciate that the sound is not muddy, the bass is actually quite punchy and is not overwhelming as I anticipated.

As compared to their bigger brother, the Marshall Monitor, these ones might not have that premium design but somehow I prefer the sound. They have the same sized 40mm drivers, however, the on-ear design might have made the mids more present. The highs are slightly recessed but still acceptable. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to customize the highs because there is no Felt Treble Filter (F.T.F.).

The Marshall Major II Bluetooth Headphones went for a simple formed pressed cardboard box that is constructed very well and lends a professional industrial look with matte black graphics and print. On the front of the box, the first thing that stands out is the Marshall name and a picture of the headphones.

As mentioned before, the Marshall Major II Bluetooth headphones feature a professional look and feel that is classy, while not being too bold or eccentric. The use of black textured leather with a white Marshall logo and gold accents further amplifies the feel as if you are about to listen to something as groundbreaking as when Jimi Hendrix rewrote rock and roll history using a Marshall Amplifier. The headphones use an over-the-head on-ear design that is constructed from high-quality materials and construction.

Upon closer inspection, you find the top side of the Band wrapped in textured black leather with padded leather on the interior finely stitched together. In addition to this, the Marshall signature is printed on the interior piece of leather that provides a nice accent to the overall look of the headphones.

The hinge section that allows the headphones to fold up to be more compact when not in use is made of hardened ABS plastic with cross cut grooves that give it a distinguished look and feel. The inside of the hinge features what looks like a brass plate with Right and Left embossed on it.

For attaching the headphone parts to the headband, Marshall uses heavy gauge metal wire that is powder coated black and that is fully adjustable by simply sliding it up or down to fit comfortably on your head, there is also a swivel axis that allows them to automatically adapt to the shape of your head for optimal comfort.

Taking a closer look at the interior part of the headphones, we see the square shaped ear cup with about a half inch of plush padding that is covered in leather. On the inside is the 40mm Moving Coil driver that is covered by hardened ABS plastic with fine fabric mesh protecting the driver.

The exterior of the ear cup is a textured Matte finish ABS plastic with raised white lettering with the Marshall logo that adds a touch of sophistication to the aesthetics of the headphones.

On the left side of the headphones on the lower ear cup, you will find the selector switch that we found very intuitive.

Usage and Testing

Setting up the Marshall Major II Bluetooth Headphones is extremely simple and as easy as plug and play. But maybe plug and play is a bad way to describe how easy they are to set up since there is nothing to plug in, so I guess it’s more like push and play. Powering on the headphones is as simple as pressing and holding the power button. When you first pair it, you will need to press and hold the button until the light turns white, then two Rapid presses and it will pair it with your device. However, Marshall also gives the option of plugging in the included 3.5-inch jack and using it in wired mode if you have an older device that is lacking Bluetooth or if you have to have it disabled and only allowed to use wired. We have been using this headset for about a month now and it has become one of my favorites and has replaced my previous headphones. When I first put it on and properly adjusted it to fit my head, it just felt perfect and this took minimal adjustment.

We were pleasantly surprised and delighted by the new control system that allows you to play, pause, change tracks, adjust volume and take phone calls, all of which is elegantly done with a simple control knob that is finished in a textured brass finish. The knob is located in the back corner of the left headphone that is ergonomically placed for easy control via your thumb. We were amazed how well the control knob functioned and how intuitive the design was so that you almost didn’t need to put any thought to locating and utilizing the controls. We were also impressed by the overall simplicity of the knob and how aesthetically elegant it looks, giving the headphones a simple and uncluttered look.

Upon hitting play, you become immersed and taken away by the sound quality that the smaller 40mm drivers are producing. I have listened to headphones that have used larger and in some instances had multiple drivers that didn’t sound as good as these Marshall Major Headphones. The sound quality of these headphones has excellent highs, mids, and lows without being overly focused on one aspect such as the fairly common practice with headphones being overly focused towards bass. We tested them on all types of music genres and movies and we were impressed with the overall performance. In several songs, I have found myself noticing subtle vocals and interments that I had never heard before that only added to the song and the enjoyment of listening to the music or watching a movie on my phone or tablet. In addition to the excellent sound quality that allows you to become immersed in what you are listening to, they were extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.
