Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra Display test : Problematic video and artifacts

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra first came out in August 2020. To date, we at DXOMARK have had time to test only its rear camera performance so far (though we expect to publish results for selfie soon). In this review, we present a summary of our test results for the Mi 10 Ultra’s display.

Key display specifications:

  • 6.67-inch OLED screen, 19.5:9 aspect ratio
  • Small notch top left corner
  • Resolution: 1080 x 2340 px, screen pixel density: 386 ppi
  • Refresh rate: 120 Hz
  • Battery: 4500 mAh

About DXOMARK Display tests: For scoring and analysis in our smartphone and other display reviews, DXOMARK engineers perform a variety of objective and perceptual tests under controlled lab and real-life conditions. This article highlights the most important results of our testing. Note that we evaluate display attributes using only the device’s built-in display hardware and default apps. (For in-depth information about how we evaluate smartphone and other displays, check out our articles, “How DXOMARK tests display quality” and “A closer look at DXOMARK Display testing.”)

Test summary

Sub-scores and attributes included in the calculations of the global score.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra

Please be aware that beyond this point, we have not modified the initial test results. While data and products remain fully comparable, you might encounter mentions and references to the previous scores.

With an overall score of 73, Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra lands in the bottom half of our display rankings thus far, pulled way down by a low score in our video tests. (Only its gaming cousin, the Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro, did worse.) The Mi 10 Ultra had only middling scores for readability; happily, it tied for second place with the Oppo Find X2 Pro for color; it was somewhat off the pace for both motion and touch; but despite good handling of aliasing, it came in dead last overall for artifacts.

Let’s take a closer look at the specifics of the Mi 10 Ultra’s performance in our new Display protocol tests.

Analyses and comparisons

The DXOMARK Display overall score of 73 for the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is derived from its scores across six categories: readability, color, video, motion, touch, and artifacts. In this section, we’ll take a closer look at these display quality sub-scores and explain what they mean for the user, and we will compare the Mi 10 Ultra’s performance in several areas against three of its principal competitors, the OnePlus 8 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, and the Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro.

Readability

DXOMARK uses the device’s gallery app to show static (still image) content when measuring the device’s display for brightness, contrast, gamma, and blue light impact, etc.

The most important aspect of a display is how readable it is in various ambient lighting situations. Ideally, a user whose phone automatically adjusts display brightness should rarely if ever have to change the settings manually to make it bright enough to see properly (or to make it dim enough in nighttime conditions to make it comfortable to read).

First off, the Mi 10 Ultra’s display is quite dark for good readability in low-light conditions. This said, it is quite good in indoor conditions, even though the screen could be brighter, and while it is too dark in the shade, it can be easily read under direct sunlight.

Below you can see the relationship between brightness and contrast on the Mi 10 Ultra and its competitors under different lighting conditions. Note that when contrast decreases, it is due to the ambient light reflected by the device — the more intense the ambient light, the lower the device’s contrast, unless it can compensate by providing more luminance.

In indoor conditions (as in the comparison shots below), the Mi 10 Ultra display (first on the left) is darker than the OnePlus and the Samsung, but still readable, even though the details in the dark parts of the image are somewhat harder to see. By contrast, all such details in dark areas are entirely lost in the Black Shark 3 Pro’s rendering on the far right:

Indoor brightness, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

In the photo array below, though, even the Black Shark is easier to read than the Mi 10 Ultra in the shade in bright outdoor conditions:

Outdoor brightness in shade, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

Under direct sunlight (as in the shots below), the Mi 10 Ultra and OnePlus 8 Pro show good detail; the Note20 Ultra is much darker; and once again the Black Shark is nearly unreadable:

Outdoor brightness in full sun, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

The Mi 10 Ultra takes too much time when responding to both rising and falling light levels, but it does both quite smoothly.

As is the case to some degree for all smartphone displays, the Mi 10 Ultra display loses some brightness and contrast when viewed at an angle. (Note that you can click on any of the device names in the chart below to select or deselect them so you can see their individual results and/or compare one or more at a time as you wish.)

In our perceptual tests, the Black Shark is clearly darker than the others in the on-axis photos below; and while Mi 10 Ultra (first on left) is a tad darker than the OnePlus and Samsung devices, it is still easily readable:

On-axis brightness, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

Viewed at an angle of 45°, the Mi 10 Ultra is still quite readable despite a noticeable drop in luminance and contrast, which contributes to a loss of detail:

Brightness at 45°, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

As for night viewing, the Mi 10 Ultra is quite dark for low-light conditions, as seen below:

Blue light filter off, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

over, it is still too dim when the BLF feature is on:

Blue light filter on, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

Color

DXOMARK uses the device’s gallery app to show static (still image) content when measuring the device’s display for white point, gamut, uniformity, color fidelity, and blue light filter impact, etc.

At 80 points, the Mi 10 Ultra tied for second in color with the Oppo Find X2 Pro in our rankings so far, with both devices just one point above the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G at 79, but a ways behind the frontrunner, the OnePlus 8 Pro at 88 points.

The Mi 10 Ultra showed very good color both indoors…

Indoor color, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

…and outdoors (the Mi 10 Ultra’s colors were slightly washed out, but still acceptable for the lighting conditions):

Outdoor color, from left to right: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro

As we touched on in the readability section above, the Mi 10 Ultra’s display brightness is not uniform across the screen, with a brighter spot in the lower half of the device (left side in landscape mode below) and along the edges. But color is not uniform, either, as you can see in the example below:

Redmi 10 design is a combination of Redmi K40 Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra

Some hours ago, @IshanAgarwal exposed some details and images of the global version of Redmi 10. While the specification appears to be expected, there is something interesting about the design of this smartphone. As we can see from the image above, the Redmi 10 Global design appears to be a combination of two pre-existing Xiaomi and Redmi phones. The front of the Redmi 10 is similar to the Redmi K40, with a center punch-hole screen design. The screen size is 6.5 inches and it supports a 90Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, it will come with a Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

However, the rear is similar to the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra (Extreme Commemorative Edition). The camera design uses a matrix camera module with a total of four cameras. The only difference here is that the Mi 10 Ultra camera sensors align vertically.

According to @IshanAgarwal, the global version of the Redmi 10 will come with a MediaTek Helio G88 processor. In addition, this smartphone will also use up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In the camera department, this device will come with a quad-rear camera setup. It will use a 50MP main camera as well as an 8MP ultra-wide angle, 2MP depth of field 2MP macro cameras. To keep its lights on, this device will have a huge 5000 mAh battery that supports an 18W fast charge.

The leak also shows that the dimension of this device will be 162 x 75.3 x 8.95mm. In addition, from the rendering, Redmi 10 retains the 3.5mm headphone jack. Looking at the specifications above, the Redmi 10 (Global) will be an entry-level model. As such, we expect the starting price to be within 1000 yuan (154). As of now, there is no information on the official launch date of this smartphone.

Furthermore, this smartphone would have a dual-SIM model with 4G LTE support. On July 14, leaker Kacper Skrzypek revealed some of the phone’s major highlights. In his tweet, Skrzypek claimed that the phone will feature a 50MP main camera, which will be a Samsung S5KJN1(ISOCELL JN1) sensor.

Other speculations claim that the main sensor of this device will support 4K @ 60fps. As far as video is concerned, it can deliver 1080p @ 240fps. However, it is unclear whether the processor will be able to handle this.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra Review: Great Phone With Great Value Powerful Features

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is an impressive smartphone, featuring top-end specs like 120Hz OLED display, up to 120x zoom, and 120W fast charging support.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is Xiaomi’s flagship in 2020, featuring an impressive specs sheet. But how do those specs perform in real life? Find out in our Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra review. Sadly, the ph0ne hasn’t made its way to India, but we expect the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra price in India to be around Rs. 57,000.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: Design Display

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is a pretty big phone, nearly as big as the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra. Therefore, you might need to consider its size before making the purchase as it can be cumbersome for those who have small hands. over, it would require deep s to carry around as well.

Xiaomi goes for the glass sandwich design on this phone with curved glass on both sides. On the front, there is a large display with a punch-hole cut-out at the top corner. The right side is where a power button and volume rocker are located while the left side is blank. At the top, there are two microphones and an IR-blaster. At the bottom edge, you can see a USB Type-C port, the main speaker, a dual-SIM tray, and a microphone. You will find a big camera bump placed at the top left corner of the back panel.

Moving to the display front, the brand goes for an OLED panel with a FHD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Yes, it is slightly disappointing that Xiaomi doesn’t offer QHD resolution, but it should be a big deal considering the other specs that the device has. If you need Quad-HD resolution, you might need to consider OnePlus or Samsung offerings.

Overall, the display has deep contrast, vibrant, and smooth. If you are not a fan of the adaptive colour setting, there are a few other options in the settings menu. The brightness is great, and the handset is even viewable under direct sunlight. Its peak brightness is around 480 nits, which is higher than the 412 nits of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: Performance

Instead of going for the Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, Xiaomi chooses the regular 865 on the Mi 10 Ultra. However, that doesn’t mean the handset is not powerful. It is very fast and could be even faster with 16GB of RAM. the unit we are reviewing has 12GB RAM. I had absolutely no performance issue with the phone. I took lots of photos, played many games, and multi-tasked a lot as well. Even with all that, the handset still refused to stutter.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: Cameras

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra rear camera setup is pretty impressive. The primary 48MP main sensor supports PDAF, Laser AF, and OIS. It is paired with a 48MP periscope telephoto lens, OIS, 5x optical zoom, and 120x digital zoom. The other two units are a 12MP telephoto lens with Dual Pixel PDAF, 2x optical zoom and a 20MP ultra-wide lens with PDAF. On the front, it gets a 20MP camera for selfies and video calls.

The device takes contrast-heavy and punchy photos with a good amount of dynamic range. In the day, there is only a slight difference between the four rear cameras in terms of quality. Colours are quite consistent, but slightly oversaturated. The device also seems to be pretty good at capturing white balance. I didn’t see anything that looked inaccurate in all of the photos I took.

In low-light conditions, the phone also delivers good results. It boosted exposure to get more detail for the shots. Even in a dark scene, the handset still managed to capture photos with not much noise.

Here are some camera samples:

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra: Battery

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra’s 4,500 mAh battery is pretty average in the price range. It is in charge of fueling a power-hungry chipset, a large display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 5G connectivity. Thankfully, Xiaomi’s software does a good job of killing apps and optimizing power usage. I could use the device for around two days before having to charge it. For regular usage, the phone would last around one and a half days.

Battery life is not the one that helps the Mi 10 Ultra shine, but it is its charging capabilities. With the 120W fast charging technology, you will only have to wait around 24 minutes to charge the phone from 0 to 100 percent. This is definitely the fastest charging smartphone that I have ever seen. It is achieved by charging two battery cells at the same time as Xiaomi splits the 4,500 mAh battery into two cells. You hate wired charging? Well, the 50W wireless charging technology is also impressive as it takes only 40 minutes to complete the charge.

However, it does come at a cost. You will see the phone gets pretty hot after finishing charging via both wired or wireless charging. As for wired charging, you might need to be careful when holding the phone after it has just finished charging. With that kind of heating, I would say it will certainly damage the longevity of the battery and that is something that you should keep in mind.
