There are several possible situations when it may be necessary to set up speed (increased/decrease) fan rotation: a high noise level caused by cooling systems; the need to cope with overheating; the desire to disperse the system and.
The easiest way to fulfill the above task is using a special software that allows you to control the settings of cooling systems. On the network you can find many programs of this kind. Both paid and free.
This small application has a mass of functions useful for the user.
It in real time collects information from temperature sensors, allowing you to detect overheating, shows the load on the processor and the frequency of system components.
The sequence of actions is extremely simple:
- Install the program by downloading the distribution package from the official site.
- Launch the program on behalf of the administrator (right button on the executable file and the selection of the same name in the drop.Down list) and do not go from the English version to Russian.

The first method is automatic adjustment of the rotation speed of the processor cooler (just put the mark opposite the “Automatic Fan Speed” item mainly menu).

Well, the main feature of the Speedfan utility, as you have already guessed, is the ability to both reduce and increase the speed of the cooler on the laptop or PC, which will undoubtedly delight those users who believe that their fans are not very well cooling the system. In this case it is better increase their rotation speed.
When starting the program, the first thing that opens is the “Indicators” liner. It will collect and display all the basic information about your system. In the arsenal of the Speudfan program there is a warning algorithm that signals if the equipment works outside the normal temperature range of the processor. A sharp cooling is recorded or vice versa.

This is a multifunctional and completely free program. Probably, I’ll grieve a little at once, saying that this program does not work on all laptops, but you can try, and will not adjust the revolutions of those fans that the motherboard from BIOS does not know how to control. For example, from my BIOS you can enable the Smartfan cooler control function only for the central processor. Although you can watch current turnover for two more. There is another program to control the laptop cooler.
Otherwise, the following situation may occur. At the time of loading the Speedfan program, current turns are read and accepted for maximum. Accordingly, if by this time BIOS does not untwist the fan to maximum revolutions, then the program will not be able to do this.
It so happened to me that at the time of loading the program, the cooler on the processor was spinning at a speed of 1100 rpm, and Speedfan could not set more value. As a result, the processor heated to 86 degrees! And I noticed this by chance when, at the time of the heavy load, I did not wait for the noise from the fan. Fortunately, nothing burned, but the computer could no longer turn on.
Launch and appearance of the program
Download and install the application from the official site.
At the first launch, a regular window will arise with a proposal for help on the functions of the program. You can put a checkmark so that it does not appear anymore and close it. Further, Speedfan considers the parameters of microcircuits on the motherboard and the values of the sensors. A sign of successful execution will be a list with current values of fan speed and components temperatures. If the fans are not found, then the program cannot help you with anything. The “1” block has a list of detected sensors of the rotation speed of coolers with the names FAN1, FAN2, and their number can be larger than there are actually (as in the picture). We pay attention to the values, for example, FAN2 and the second FAN1 have real indicators 2837 and 3358 RPM (revolutions per minute), and the rest are in zeros or with garbage (in the picture 12 RPM this is garbage). We will remove extra extra.
In the “2” block, the detected temperature sensors are shown. GPU is a graphic chipset, HD0 is a hard drive, CPU is a central processor (instead of a CPU in the TEMP3 picture), and the rest of the garbage (cannot be 17 or 127 degrees). This is the lack of the program, what needs to be guessed where (but then we ourselves will rename the sensors as it should). True, on the site you can download known configurations, but the procedure is not simple and complicated by English.
If it is not clear what parameter is responsible for, then you can see the values in some other program to determine the parameters of the computer and sensors, for example AIDA64 and compare with those that the Speedfan program determined to know exactly what speed and temperature readings (on the video under the article I’ll show everything).
And in the “3” block, we have Speed01, Speed02 speed adjustments to us, with which you can set the rotation speed as a percentage (can be shown as PWM1, PWM2, look more on the video). So far, we need to determine which Speed01-06 which fanx affects. To do this, we change the values of each from 100% to 80-50% and we look at whether the speed of any fan has changed. I repeat that not all fans will be regulated, but only those that the motherboard from BIOS can manage.
So we got to the settings. Click the “Configuration” button and first of all we will call all the sensors with clear names. On my example, I will programatically manage the processor cooler.
On the “Temperature” tab, we find a processor temperature sensor in the previous step (I have TEMP3) and click on it first once, and then after a second again. Now you can enter any name, for example, “CPU TEMP”. In the settings below, we enter the desired temperature, which the program will maintain with a minimum possible speed of rotation of the cooler, and the temperature of the alarm at which the maximum speed is included.
I set 55 and 65 degrees, respectively, but for everyone it is individual, experiment. At a highly low temperature, fans will always spin at maximum speeds.
Next, unfold the branch and remove all the checkmarks, except for the Speed0x that regulates the Fanx processor (we have already identified this earlier). In my example, this is Speed04. And also remove the checkmarks from all other temperatures that we do not want to see in the main window of the program.
On the tab, the fans simply find the right fans, call them as you want, and turn off unnecessary.
We go further to the “speed” tab. We stand on that Speed0x that is responsible for the desired cooler, rename it (for example, in CPU Speed) and set the parameters:
- Minimum. The minimum percentage of the maximum speed, which the program will be able to establish
- Maximum. Respectively, the maximum percentage.
I have a minimum cost 55%, and a maximum of 80%. It’s okay that the program will not be able to set a value by 100%, because on the “temperature” tab, we set the threshold value of anxiety, in which 100% of the revolutions will be forcibly. Also, for automatic control, we do not forget to put the “Auto change” show.

The manufacturer utilities (usually for gaming devices)
Powerful gaming laptops (PC) most often go with special. SO from the manufacturer (and usually in its options there is a detailed setting of coolers). In this case, it makes no sense to mess with Speedfan (especially since it may not get access to the cooler).

How to configure a cooler in MSI AFTERBurner

But many manufacturers do not adjust the dependence of the cooler revolutions on the temperature of the components in the laptop, which leads to the fact that the laptop begins to make noise even with a slight load. Given the fact that laptop coolers are noisy loudly and unpleasant (by the way, they called the problem. Fan noise), and the temperatures are extremely far from critical. If, nevertheless, no config is suitable. The turnover of the cooler of some laptops (these are almost all the Dell and HP models, as well as some others) can be set in the Hwinfo64 program. To do this, run it in Sensors mode and click on the cooler icon below:
