Convertible Refrigerator? How it is different from Non-Convertible Fridge?

A standard refrigerator has two main compartments, the fridge, and the freezer compartment.

Consumers, especially those with non-vegetarian food habits, love having more freezer space, whereas vegetarians prefer more refrigeration space.

As a result, manufacturers always find it challenging to allocate appropriate space for refrigeration and freezing compartments.

This dilemma has inspired manufacturers to introduce facilities like using the freezer and refrigeration compartments interchangeably. However, both these compartments require maintaining drastically different temperature settings. So, here comes the birth of the convertible refrigerator.

Samsung was the first brand to introduce the convertibility feature in their refrigerator models. Subsequently, LG, Haier, and Whirlpool have improvised on the design to introduce the convertibility feature.

How does the convertibility feature work?

The refrigeration compartment requires a temperature range of 2 0 C to 5 0 C, whereas the freezer compartment needs a temperature between.15 0 C and.23 0 C.

So the convertibility feature converts the freezer into a fridge and vice-versa. Samsung introduced this basic functionality in their Indian refrigerator models. So let us see how it works.

Convertible refrigerator technology requires the appliance to have two fans and evaporators, one set each for the freezer and the refrigeration compartments. As a result, consumers can select the modes accordingly using specific control options and activate the convertibility feature.

Depending on user preferences, manufacturers have introduced multiple permutations and combinations in their convertible refrigerator models. However, the fundamental technology is the same.

Users should note that the convertible feature needs time to adjust and start taking effect. For example, Samsung models take approximately two hours, whereas LG has speeded it up to around one hour.

We shall now discuss the individual models from Samsung, LG, Haier, and Whirlpool to understand the concept better.

Samsung 5-in-1 Convertible Refrigerator

Samsung, the pioneer of convertible refrigerator technology in India, has introduced the 5-in-1 convertibility feature in its premium double-door models. The 5-in-1 convertible refrigerator has the following five modes.

  • The Normal Mode: It is the regular mode where the more significant compartment is the refrigerator part, and the smaller portion at the top is the freezer. This mode is the default mode.
  • Extra Fridge Mode: Vegetarian consumers do not regularly use the freezer mode. They prefer to store their food in the refrigerator compartment. So the freezer mode largely remains unused. Samsung convertible refrigerator offers the facility to convert the freezer mode into a refrigerator compartment by adjusting its temperature settings accordingly. Therefore, the consumer has more fridge space for storage, giving the mode its name, Extra Fridge Mode.
  • Seasonal Mode: The Extra Fridge Mode offers more refrigeration space. But what if you do not require extra space and the freezer, especially during winter when the freezers are almost empty? Samsung offers Seasonal Mode, where the consumer can conveniently switch off the freezer and use the refrigeration compartment alone. It saves power.
  • Vacation Mode: Consumers do not need the refrigerator to work 24 x 7 x 365 when they go out on vacations. At the same time, they might need to store some food items. But keeping the appliance on for the entire vacation wastes power. Samsung 5-in-1 convertible refrigerator offers a Vacation Mode, where the consumer can shut down the refrigerator compartment and keep the freezer compartment functioning as usual. Thus, it saves power.
  • Home Alone Mode: The Vacation Mode is excellent if the entire family goes out on holiday. However, if one person remains back for some reason, using the entire fridge can consume unnecessary power. Therefore, Samsung’s Home Alone Mode allows users to switch off the fridge compartment and use the freezer as a mini refrigerator. So it serves the dual purpose of a refrigerator and saves power simultaneously.

Samsung also offers a 3-in-1 convertible refrigerator, where the Vacation and Home Alone modes are unavailable. Otherwise, the functioning is the same.

LG Dual Fridge

The Samsung 5-in-1 convertible refrigerator is a comprehensive appliance offering multiple options. The LG Dual Fridge offers fewer features but minimizes the deficiency by reducing the time necessary for the conversion feature to take effect. This LG model has two operational modes.

  • The Normal Mode: It is the regular operational mode of the refrigerator where the freezer and the fridge compartment work independently.
  • The Only Fridge Mode: This mode allows users to convert the freezer compartment into a refrigerator and increase overall refrigerator storage space by 40%.

Haier 8-in-1 Convertible Refrigerator

Haier uses a couple more permutations and combinations to improvise the Samsung 5-in-1 convertible refrigerator to offer its 8-in-1 model.

  • The Normal Mode: This mode is the same as in the Samsung and LG models.
  • The Veg Mode: This mode is the equivalent of the Extra Fridge Mode in the Samsung model, where the entire appliance is converted into a refrigerator debarred of any chilling operation.
  • Home Alone Mode: This mode is the same as Samsung’s seasonal mode, where the consumer can switch off the freezer function entirely and use the refrigeration compartment alone.
  • Freezer Mode: Haier’s Freezer Mode is the equivalent of Samsung’s Vacation Mode, where the user can switch off the fridge compartment and let the freezer function as usual.
  • Vacation Mode: The Vacation Mode in Haier models is the same as Samsung’s Home Alone Mode, where the consumer switches off the fridge compartment but uses the freezer as a refrigerator debarred of chilling activities.
  • Surprise Party Mode: It is an improvised version of the Normal Mode but with spiced-up freezing features like turbo icing technology that allows quicker cooling and ice making. It is ideal when you have surprise guests turning up suddenly.
  • Summer Mode: This mode isunique to Haier refrigerators, where the settings allow the appliance to function at peak capacity in the summer months to provide optimal cooling.
  • Swift Chill Mode: This unique mode spices up the entire Haier refrigerator and works up the maximum settings to ensure the fastest possible cooling of your food in the appliance.

Whirlpool 10-in-1 Convertible Refrigerator

Whirlpool has introduced an innovative bottom freezer-mounted refrigerator with a unique 10-in-1 convertibility feature. The working principle is the same as that of the other refrigerator brands discussed here.

  • Energy Saver Mode: Consumers can switch on the Energy Saver Mode to save more power when fridge usage is less. In this way, it enhances the appliance’s efficiency.
  • Fast Ice Mode: This mode allows the appliance to make ice faster in the freezer compartment.
  • Party Mode: It is similar to the Surprise Party Mode in Haier models.
  • Mini Ref Mode: This mode converts the freezer compartment into a mini refrigerator when you have fewer food items to refrigerate. It is the same as the Home Alone Mode in Samsung models.
  • Vacation Mode: It is similar to Samsung’s Vacation Mode, where consumers can switch off the fridge compartment and keep the freezer running to store perishable items.
  • Chef Mode: This mode helps to store frozen food if it is to be consumed within a short time. Thus, it eliminates the need for defrosting frozen food.
  • All Season Mode: The All Season Mode enables the appliance to automatically adapt to the load, usage patterns, and external weather conditions to save power and offer optimal cooling.
  • Grocery Day Mode: This mode is equivalent to the Fridge Only Mode in LG models, where the entire appliance, including the freezer, works as a refrigerator.
  • Beverages Mode: This mode prevents the beverages from becoming frozen inside the freezer. Instead, it chills them perfectly for immediate consumption.
  • Deep Freeze Mode: This mode allows for preserving food items in the freezer by ensuring optimal cooling temperatures.

Final Thoughts

If you observe closely, the convertibility features are similar in all refrigerator models discussed here. These additional operational modes distinguish convertible refrigerators from conventional non-convertible models.

  • Remove the refrigerator from the power source.
  • Allow the refrigerator to cool for 10 to 15 minutes after turning it off and unplugging it. (Some people also recommend leaving it for a few hours.)

  • The refrigerator must have refreshed, rebooted, and rebalanced itself by now.

Restart the wire harness that connects the door to the main control unit.

The wiring harness that connects the refrigerator door to the main control unit might occasionally fail things.

The wire harness failure causes communication problems, and the display begins blinking an error code.

In this situation, you’ll need to reset the Samsung refrigerator display to resolve the problem. To reset the Samsung refrigerator display via the wire harness, follow these steps:

How to Activate a Refrigerator

Water filters are used to ensure that the water is clean and safe to consume.

Samsung refrigerators include built-in water filters that come in helpful when it comes to drinking water.

If your refrigerator’s water filter isn’t working, a reset may be necessary.

The following are the steps for resetting the water filter:

How to Use a Wire Harness to Reset a Refrigerator

The display may occasionally flash an error code, indicating a communication problem between the refrigerator door and the main control unit.

This could be a problem with the wiring harness that connects them.

Again, knowing the type of problem via the precise error code will help you.

To reset, turn off the unit and disconnect it. Then, see if the wiring harness is detached.

If this is the case, simply reconnect. If it is already in place, unplug it and then reattach it. Then plug it in and turn on the fridge. It would have gotten rid of the error code.

Here’s a video to show you how to inspect the wire harness on your Samsung refrigerator:

How to Reset the Touch Screen on a Fridge

To reset a Samsung fridge touch screen, look for a red switch on top of the fridge (it’s hidden behind a little panel on the right door). Push is written on the panel). Flip the red switch and then return it to its original position. Your touch screen should now be operational.

How to Reset the fridge temperature

To reset the temperature of your Samsung refrigerator, perform the following steps.

Navigate to the control panel or touch-screen display (Some Samsung refrigerator models have theirs inside the fridge while others have their displays outside).

Press the refrigerator button to see the current temperature (The temperature ranges from 34 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit).

Continue to push the fridge button until you reach the desired temperature. Assuming you want to raise the temperature to 37 degrees and it is currently at 35 degrees, pressing the button once will bring the temperature down to 34 degrees, which is the lowest temperature for the fridge.

When you press the button again while it is at 34 degrees, it will rise to the highest point of 44 degrees. Then press the button again to move it to 43, and so on until it reaches 37.

Important: There are no up or down buttons on the temperature setting, which instead travels in circles from 44 degrees down to 34 degrees and back to 44 degrees.

How To Reset Your Samsung Refrigerator Fast [In Easy Steps]

If you’re wondering how to reset your Samsung refrigerator or are worried about causing further damage by pressing the wrong buttons, this article is a reset and repair guide.

Where Is the Reset Button on a Samsung Refrigerator?

The reset button on a Samsung refrigerator is found on the interior side of the refrigerator, either on the control panel or behind the ice bucket.

Not all Samsung refrigerators have a reset button. Samsung refrigerator reset buttons are commonly found in refrigerators with water filters or ice makers. The reset button helps you restore your Samsung Refrigerator to its normal working mode.

For Samsung refrigerators with water filter indicators, the reset button comes in handy after you change the refrigerator’s water filter.

Signs That Show That You Need to Reset Your Samsung Refrigerator

Here are some of the signs that show that you need to reset your Samsung refrigerator:

Erratic Temperature Display

The temperature display is erratic and blinking wildly, or it’s not even working at all.

This could be due to several reasons, such as improper closing of the refrigerator door or leaving the door open for too long.

It could also be that you have some hot food in the fridge (it is always advisable to let food cool a bit before placing it in the refrigerator).

Refrigerator Still in Shop Mode

It might also be that your refrigerator is in shop mode, which is the mode the refrigerator typically is in the showroom.

The lights would be on in this mode, but the compressor won’t run. So, the cooling action will be off. The same goes for the ice maker and water dispenser.

That way, potential customers can see the nice features of the refrigerator without it running any cooling operation.

Once you pay for the refrigerator, the store resets it to activate normal functions, since you may not know how to do it on your own or forget to do it.

Also, somewhere along the line, while using it in your home, you may press a button that takes it back to shop mode settings.

Either way, a reset is needed.

You can check out this video to learn how to take your Samsung refrigerator out of Shop (Demo) mode:

How To Reset Samsung Refrigerator From Demo Mode

To reset your Samsung refrigerator and get it out of demo mode, press the Energy Saver and Freezer buttons at the same time, and hold them for about 10 seconds. Do keep in mind that this method works only for Samsung refrigerators from 2014 and older.

For newer Samsung refrigerators, you will need to press Freezer, Energy Save, and Lighting simultaneously. In some cases, you will need to press Freezer, Energy Save, and Fridge and hold them simultaneously for about 10 seconds.

Once the demo mode is successfully reset (or deactivated), the display will show the refrigerator’s current temperature.

How To Reset Your Samsung Refrigerator: Control Panel

To reset your Samsung refrigerator control panel, simply press the Power Cool and Power Freeze buttons at the same time and hold for about 10 seconds until you see the numbers on the display reset.

But what if your control panel is not displaying or the buttons are not working at all? Well, it could be that your refrigerator is in Child lock mode, or there’s a glitch in the system.

Carry out a general reset by following the steps above. If that doesn’t work, deactivate the child lock mode (if it is on).

To deactivate the child lock feature on your Samsung refrigerator, simply press and hold the child lock button for a few seconds.

In the absence of one (depending on the model), follow the steps provided for your model in the product manual.

Here’s another way to carry out a control panel display reset…

To reset your control panel display, locate the reset switch at the top of the right door (interior side), switch it off, and then on again. The unit will reboot, and the Samsung logo will appear on the panel.

If it doesn’t work, switch it off again and leave it for some time before switching it back on. And if this reset does not work, disconnect the refrigerator from the electric power and allow the electronic control board to reset.

Reconnect it back to power after about five minutes; this hard reset should fix the board. Otherwise, you may need a new electronic control board or PCB.

How To Reset Your Samsung Refrigerator: Wire Harness

At times, the display might blink an error code indicating that there is a communication problem between the refrigerator door and the main control unit.
