Full-Frame (FE) Lenses Compatibility
Just to be clear, Sony full-frame lenses which are abbreviated FE are compatible with Sony’s full-frame and APS-C mirrorless cameras that utilize Sony’s E-mount system.
Native E-mount lenses from Sony typically offer the best autofocus performance, although Tamron are not far behind and Sigma’s offerings are also pretty impressive. But if AF performance is important to you then it’s best to stick with native glass.
Best FE Lenses
With over one hundred E-mount lenses to choose from including E-mount lenses from third-parties, buying a lens for your Alpha camera can be a little overwhelming.
To help you out I’ve narrowed down 15 of the best lenses available today, including some third-party lenses that should definitely not be overlooked.

Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM
The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM is one of the best wide-angle zoom lenses that you could attach to your Sony Alpha camera.
This lens is a great choice for landscape, astro, real estate, architectural, and many other forms of photography where a wider perspective is required.
The lens is constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups and the build quality is excellent, it’s also weather sealed against dust and moisture. It is fairly heavy though and tips the scales at 24 oz. / 680 g.
The 11 circular aperture blades delivers ultra-smooth bokeh and beautiful sunstars, focusing is fast and silent, and the sharpness is excellent across the frame.
I used to own this lens myself but with a growing family I have very little time for landscape photography so I sold it to help towards purchasing the Sony a1.
Key Specs
With the creation of the Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM lens Sony really knocked the ball out of the park and proved that an exceptionally high quality lens needn’t be the size of a bus or the weight of an elephant.
This lens is constructed of 13 elements in 10 groups and is extremely well built, as it should be for a G Master (GM) lens. It’s also weather sealed against dust and moisture and weighs in at only 15.7 oz (445 g).
On the lens itself you will find a FOCUS hold button that can be customized, an AF on/off switch, an aperture selection ring and a click on/off switch for the aperture ring.
This lens is extremely sharp across the frame even when wide open at its maximum aperture of f/1.4. Distortion is well controlled as is the coma making this a great lens for astro photography.
The bokeh is silky smooth and possibly the best of all the current 24mm f/1.4 lenses available. Autofocus is fast, quiet and super accurate.
24mm is an excellent focal length for many subjects including: architecture, wedding and event photography, street photography, astrophotography and even environmental portraits.
I also own this lens myself and it would be one of the last lenses that I’d sell if I ever needed the money.
Key Specs
The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is one of the very few zoom lenses that can keep up optically with many of the best prime lenses.
Constructed from 20 elements in 15 groups, this is also a very well built and weather sealed lens. The 11 bladed circular aperture helps to create a silky smooth bokeh that will really make your subjects pop.
Four of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors help to achieve very high autofocus precision and approximately 2x better tracking performance while zooming than the previous Mark I lens.
Weighing just 24.6 oz (695 g) this updated Mark II lens is an incredible 6.74 oz (191 g) lighter than its predecessor the Mark I.
On the lens body itself you’ll find a customizable FOCUS hold button, a separate FOCUS, zoom and de-clickable aperture ring, an iris lock switch, AF/MF switch and a zoom smoothness switch.
Sharpness is outstanding throughout the entire zoom range at all apertures and chromatic aberrations are well controlled too.
Whether shooting landscapes, weddings, sports, or portraits, this lens will handle pretty much everything that you can possibly throw at it and more.
I don’t own this lens myself yet, but if I win the lottery it would be one of my first purchases.
Key Specs
If you are looking for a great all-rounder then the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS lens definitely ticks this box.
It’s the perfect choice for travel, landscape, or even events photography.
The lens is sharp from 24mm all the way up to 105mm even when you are shooting wide open at f/4. If you like MTF charts then Roger Cicala has some over at LensRentals.com.
The lens is constructed from 17 elements in 14 groups and built extremely well. The 9 bladed circular aperture helps to produce nice soft backgrounds that will help your subjects to standout.
On the lens body itself you’ll find a customizable FOCUS hold button, separate FOCUS and zoom rings, an AF/MF switch and a Steady Shot On/Off switch.
The autofocus is fast, accurate and very quiet. It also has optical stabilization built into the lens.
This is one of the best if not the best 24-105 zoom lens on the market today and it would be in my bag today if I had the spare cash.
Key Specs
Tamron enjoyed so much success with their 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens that they decided to introduce a Mark II version sooner rather than later.
It appears that Tamron is trying very hard not to tread on Sony’s toes my introducing a unique 28-75mm focal length instead of going with the standard 24-70.
The lens is constructed of 17 elements in 5 groups and there’s a 9 bladed circular aperture. Despite the very attractive price this lens is still extremely well built, it’s also weather sealed.
It shares the same 67 mm filter thread like many of Tamron’s other Sony E-mount lenses, which saves you the trouble and cost of purchasing multiple filters.
The lens delivers a very strong optical performance throughout zoom range, there’s also excellent contrast and control of chromatic aberrations.
The VXD FOCUS motor is both fast and quiet. However, like with many of Tamron’s lenses there is no stabilization built into the lens so you’ll need to rely on your cameras IBIS (in-body stabilization). Thankfully the Sony a7III does have IBIS which offers 5 stops of stabilization.
If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to the rather expensive Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM II lens then this is the lens to take a much closer look at.
Key Specs
There’s certainly no shortage of 35 mm lens options in Sony’s E-mount line-up, but if you want the best and money is no object then the Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM is the best choice.
This lens has been created for both stills and video shooters and features Sony’s de-clickable aperture ring and a programmable FOCUS hold button for multiple custom functions.
The lens is very well built and constructed of 10 groups and 14 elements. The 11 circular aperture blades help to create a beautifully soft bokeh and the lens is weather sealed at all of the important points.
Two XD Extreme Dynamic Linear motors provide fast, quiet and very precise subject tracking.
This lens delivers excellent sharpness at f/1.4 across the frame, has good flare resistance and coma handling, and also low chromatic aberrations.
If you are looking for a 35mm full frame lens then this is definitely the one to take a much closer look at.
Key Specs
The Sigma 70mm F2.8 DG Macro lens was one of the first SLR lenses that Sigma decided to adapt to Sony E-mount, so this lens has not been built from the ground up for mirrorless cameras like some of their newer lenses.
The build quality is typical of Sigma’s ART Series and it’s very hard to find anything to complain about here.
Despite adapting this lens the optical quality is excellent and the colors it produces straight out of the camera are very pleasing indeed. Images are very sharp across the frame, chromatic aberration is well controlled as is distortion.
The autofocus motor unfortunately doesn’t get the same amount of love as the optical elements of this lens as it’s both slow and rather noisy. Still, I prefer to manual FOCUS most of the time for macro photography and with the help of FOCUS peaking the slow noisy AF isn’t really a problem.
Unlike the Sony 90mm F2.8 G lens the Sigma does extend as you FOCUS but never past the lens hood. The minimum focusing distance is just 0.25m from the sensor so you will need to get pretty close to your subject for 1:1 shots, which might mean that your subject flies off before you hit the shutter button.
If the Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens is a little too expensive for you, then this lens is definitely worth considering.
Key Specs
Despite being called a macro lens, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens is also an excellent portrait lens and one of the sharpest lenses that Sony has ever built.
DxOMark reviewed this lens and said that its outstanding. It also scored higher marks than both the Canon and Nikon equivalents.
It is very hard to find fault with this lens but if I’m being very picky then AF performance could be faster and the manual FOCUS ring adjustments could be finer for more precision.
The lens is constructed from 15 elements in 11 groups and has a 9 bladed circular aperture.
Being a macro lens it offers a magnification ratio of 1.0x and a minimum focussing distance of 0.92 ft (0.28 m). This lens also has optical stabilization built in.
For shooting portraits this lens is ridiculously sharp. So if you don’t want to show every spot, blemish and wrinkle on your model this lens probably shouldn’t be your first choice for portrait work.
Hopefully my mum won’t mind me posting this photo of her
If you are looking for a dedicated macro lens, or a lens that can combine both macro and portrait photography roles, then look no further than the 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens.
I own this lens myself and love using it for macro work and the odd portrait.
Key Specs
Roger Cicala from LensRentals.com tested the Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM lens and said: “This is the sharpest lens we’ve tested. Period. (At last count, that’s out of 300 lenses tested.)
Roger isn’t the only person to praise this lens, many reviewers are saying that this is the sharpest lens that they have ever laid hands on as well.
Thankfully it’s not only sharpness where this lens shines, it also displays minimum chromatic aberrations, very low distortion and vignetting.
The autofocus motors are also extremely fast making this lens a great choice for sports and action photographers as well as portrait shooters.
Constructed from 13 elements in 10 groups with a 11 bladed circular aperture, this is a very well built and weather sealed lens.
On the lens body itself you’ll find a customizable FOCUS hold button, separate FOCUS and zoom rings, an aperture ring, an aperture click on/off switch, an AF/MF switch and a FOCUS limiter switch.
There’s no stabilization built in but with a maximum aperture of F1.8 you’ll be able to increase your shutter speed and freeze the action without bumping up the ISO too much.
If this is a FOCUS range that you shoot at often then it’s well worth taking a closer look at this lens.
Key Specs
The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS Mark II lens offers significant improvements over its Mark I predecessor, both optically and physically.
It still maintains the excellent internal zoom design which makes handling this lens such a pleasure, but somehow Sony has also managed to shave an incredible 15.34 oz / 435 g off the weight, which makes it around 29% lighter than the Mark I.
Four of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors boost AF speed by up to 4x compared to the previous model. When tracking a short-distance runner, for example, tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30% compared to the previous model.
The Mark II lens features new video features including: reduced FOCUS breathing, FOCUS shift when zooming, and axis shift when zooming.
On the lens body you’ll find independent control rings for FOCUS, zoom, aperture with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring and an iris lock. There’s also a full-time DMF on/off switch, a FOCUS-range limiter, Mode 1, Mode 2, and Mode 3 optical image stabilisation, and AF/MF switch.
Optically the lens delivers exceptional sharpness and contrast throughout the zoom range, low distortion and vignette and stunning bokeh.
This lens also supports Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. If you’d like to see how well it performs with the 2x teleconverter attached then head over to my Sony 100-400 vs Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM II 2x Comparison.
I own both the Mark I and Mark II versions of this lens and can confidently say that the Mark II is a significant improvement over the Mark I and worth the extra dollars that it costs.
Key Specs
The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD lens is a great lower cost alternative to the Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM II lens.
Constructed of 19 elements in 14 groups and a 6 blade circular aperture, this lens is also weather sealed against dust and moisture.
It weighs just 28.57 oz (810 g) making it 8.29 oz / 235 g lighter than the Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM II lens.
A lot of these weight savings come down to the reduced telephoto end of 180mm compared to 200mm of the Sony lens, it also has no stabilization built into the lens and does not support teleconverters.
The autofocus however is fast, accurate and quiet and the lens delivers very good sharpness across the frame.
On the lens body you’ll find a FOCUS and zoom ring and a zoom lock switch but that’s it. Compared to the Sony lens it’s an extremely basic lens when it comes to the lens controls. The filter thread is 67 mm like many of Tamron’s E-mount lenses.
I’m also fortunate to own this lens and for the price it really is hard to beat. If you don’t want to spend big on the Sony then I don’t think you will have any regrets purchasing this lens.
Key Specs
I purchased the Sony FE F4.5-5.6 100-400mm G Master on the first day that it was released and it has probably spent more time attached to my cameras than any other lens I own, well at least it did until I bought the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens.
Being a GM lens the build quality is excellent and despite its focal length it weighs in at only 1395 g (49.21 oz.) and measures 205 mm (8.07 in.) in length. This makes it a very good option for travelling with and I did just that when I took this lens to Borneo for a couple of weeks (my Borneo adventure).
The lens is weather sealed against dust and moisture and I had no issues with condensation even in Borneo which was extremely hot and humid.
Sharpness across the frame is excellent and DxOMark rate this as the sharpest lens in the 100-400mm focal range.
The lens is compatible with both the Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, helping to extend its reach up to 560mm with the 1.4x and up to 800mm with the 2x.
The autofocus is fast, accurate and virtually silent and the lens also features optical image stabilization built-in with 2 panning modes.
On the lens body you’ll find both a FOCUS and zoom ring, there’s also a zoom smoothness adjuster that provides mechanical control of zoom ring torque. Unfortunately there is no zoom lock switch and this lens can creep when pointing towards the ground.
You will also find an array of switches on the side of the lens which include: AF/MF switch, AF distance limiter to reduce FOCUS searching to 3 meters and greater, OSS (Optical Steady Shot) on and off switch which also overrides the build in IBIS of your camera if present, and the panning mode switch.
This really is the best 100-400mm zoom lens available for Sony E-mount today. An alternative would be the Sigma 100-400 but the autofocus speed and tracking stickiness lags behind by quite some distance.
Key Specs
The Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens is an exceptional telephoto lens for wildlife and sports photographers.
With a focal range of 200-600mm and a maximum aperture of f/6.3 at 600mm this lens will help you to get closer to wildlife than ever before. If 600mm is not long enough then you can also add the 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters.
Constructed of 24 elements in 17 groups this is a big lens and it weighs 74.7 oz (2,115 g) without tripod mount and is 318mm in length. It’s also weather sealed and has 3 mode image stabilization built-in.
It’s an internal zoom lens which really helps with the balance and a short zoom throw makes going from 200mm to 600mm a breeze.
On the lens body you’ll find a FOCUS and zoom ring, a FOCUS limiter switch, AF/MF switch, Steady Shot on/off switch, mode 1/2/3 OS switch and a customizable FOCUS hold button.

The tripod foot is also removable so you can replace it with something more practical like the Kirk LP-68 (BH Photo) that includes an arca-swiss plate.
At 600mm this lens is sharper than the Sony FE 100-400 1.4x is at 560mm. At 400mm this lens is also a touch sharper than the 100-400 which considering it’s a G lens and not a GM lens is really quite something.
Since owning the 200-600 my 100-400 has been collecting dust, a lot of dust.
However, if you’d like to find out how this lens stacks up against the Sony FE 100-400 GM lens then head over to my 200-600 vs 100-400 comparison.
Key Specs
If money is no object and you demand only the best then the Sony FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens is possibly the lens for you.

I don’t own this lens myself, but I know from many Alpha Shooters who do that it is extremely sharp across the frame and has terrific autofocus performance even with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters attached that take the reach to 560mm and 800mm respectively.
For a large prime lens it still manages to weigh in at only 2895g (102.12 oz.).
If there was one negative it’s definitely the price. At 11,998.00 in the US or £10,499.00 in the UK, many of us will need to start selling body parts to afford it!
Key Specs
If you thought that the 400mm F2.8 GM was expensive then you should probably skip straight past the Sony FE 600mm F4 GM OSS lens, which at 12,998.00 or £11,999.00 is Sony’s most expensive super telephoto lens ever.
Just like the 400mm F2.8 this is an exceptionally sharp lens with lightning fast autofocus performance. Point this lens at your subject and it really has not chance of getting away!
Both the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are also supported, taking this lens to 900mm or 1200mm.
This is definitely my dream lens but I’ll have to sell my car and a few body parts to afford it.
Key Specs
The Sony 1.4x teleconverter (SEL14TC) is currently only compatible with the lenses listed above. It will not physically fit any other Sony E-mount lenses.
You do lose one stop of light with the 1.4x teleconverter but AF performance still remains pretty good and it’s extremely good on the Sony FE 70-200 F2.8 GM II and the 400mm and 600mm prime lenses.
Key Specs
The Sony 2x teleconverter (SEL20TC) is only compatible with the lenses listed above. It will not physically fit any other Sony E-mount lenses.
You do lose two stops of light with the 2x teleconverter and AF performance can suffer if you are using an older camera that doesn’t support phase detection above F11 depending on the lens that you are using. With the Sony FE 70-200 F2.8 GM II and the 400mm and 600mm prime lenses AF performance is still very impressive.
About Timothy Mayo
I love shooting wildlife the most but will happily point my camera at pretty much anything. I started Alpha Shooters in 2017 to share my own photographic journey and experiences shooting with Sony Alpha. The site has since evolved into a popular community and resource. You can find out more about my story here or follow me on Instagram if you wish. I also have a YouTube Channel but haven’t published much content over the past year due to spending more time changing smelly nappies and also launching our community forums. However, I do hope to get back to creating content again there soon!

Great list with full of useful information ! Did you have the chance to check the Tamron 35-150mm F2-F2.8 ?
I bought the 24-105 bundled with the A7III – you are right, for travel general use it is fabulous, perfect for city breaks (though I also find the 16-35 f4 is even better if going inside cathedrals). My only downside of the 24-105 is that the bokeh is fairly horrid where there are vertical lines; I do a lot of macro (Sigma 105 La-ea3) but for larger flowers etc the stems any grass look fairly terrible if out of FOCUS. These are the only lenses I use, but I did make a discovery: my old a-mount Tamron 70-300 Di APS-C which cost £99 new works really well as a full-frame, the 1:2 macro, if not fully zoomed to 300mm and if stopped down to f7.1 is a cracking lightweight manual zoom for bigger bugs and has a similar close-FOCUS distance as the 100-400 GM…. obvious caveats apply, but on a budget and with a flash means I can put my savings towards the 200-600 which has a terrible close-FOCUS and is a beast to carry in any bag. Thanks for your postings
Thanks for commenting Paul and glad to hear that your old Tamron lens works so well on your a7III. The 200-600 is a lovely lens but close focusing is not its strong point, the 100-400 works much better here. That said, I rarely use my 100-400 after picking up the 200-600, but if I wanted to travel light or shoot some bugs then I’d dust off the 100-400 and throw it in my bag. All the best, Tim

Best Sony Zoom Lenses to Buy in 2023 A Full-Frame Camera Lens Buying Guide
For those of you who are run-and-gun types of shooters like me, using prime lenses with your Sony cameras might not be the most ideal setup, especially when it comes to travel photography/cinematography, as moments often come and go in a split second.
We do not have the luxury of time to switch between lenses while we are shooting, so we often end up having to rely on zoom lenses that allow us to cover many focal lengths in one lens.
If you are looking to buy a zoom lens for your Sony cameras, you are in the right place. There are tons of options available from both Sony and third-party companies, and it can be quite overwhelming to choose the right one for you.
Not all zoom lenses are created equal, so I have decided to compile a complete list of the best Sony zoom lenses you can buy for your cameras, for all situations. Without further ado, here are the 17 best Sony zoom lenses to buy:

What Makes for a Good Travel Zoom Lens for Sony Cameras?
For me, what makes a good travel zoom lens is the lens that strikes the perfect balance between high-quality glass, weight, and features that will help me take great photos in any situation I might find myself in without hindering my ability to travel around effectively.
I’ll be including lenses for different travel situations and shooting styles that reflect the type of traveler you are, such as street photography, wildlife, and general purpose. Additionally, I’ll provide budget alternatives that will help your Sony camera reach its full potential.
Of course, feel free to mix and match and see which travel lenses fit your needs the most. Let’s begin with the most important travel lens of all, the best all-around general-purpose lens that every travel photographer should have in their kit.
The Best All-Purpose Lens
Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II Lens: This is, hands down, the best zoom lens you can get if you are looking for one lens to do it all. The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens is an updated version of the wildly popular but old Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens, bringing new features and technologies to an all-purpose lens while keeping it light and small.
The focal range of this lens is also extremely versatile, allowing you to go wide at 24mm, which is great for architecture and landscape, while you have the option to zoom in at 70mm and shoot portraits.
The Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II lens’s optical performance is also outstanding, with its corner-to-corner sharpness and excellent build quality. With its fast aperture at F2.8, the lens can produce stunning bokeh and subject separation, allowing you to capture sharp images even in poor lighting conditions.
The best part about this lens is its form factor. Sony called this lens the world’s lightest Full Frame F2.8 constant aperture standard zoom lens, weighing only 690g, which is unheard of for such a versatile lens.
For those of you who are looking for the best Sony all-purpose zoom lens that comes with excellent performance while remaining relatively lightweight and compact, this is the zoom lens to get. It is a little expensive but considering the impressive quality-to-size ratio, I think it is worth the price tag. This lens is truly the one lens to rule them all.
The Best Value All-Purpose Lens
Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art: If you are looking for a Sony all-purpose zoom lens with a range of 24-70mm, but the Sony GM lens is a little out of your budget range, the next best option is the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens. It is a great performing lens at a great price.
This lens covers the most versatile range of 24-70mm, and it comes with a fast aperture and excellent optical performance that definitely give the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens a run for its money.
It is a little larger and a little bit heavier than the Sony all-purpose GM lens, but it comes at half the price, retailing at around 1,000 USD, which makes it the best value all-purpose lens out there.
If you are looking for an all-purpose lens that is 85% as good as the Sony GM lens but at more than half the price, you can’t get anything better than the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens. Just be sure to get a newly released one as their older models suffer from dust problems. They have since fixed it, though, so the lens should be great to buy now.
The Most Versatile All-Purpose Lens
Sony 20-70mm F4 G Lens: For the most versatile all-purpose lens to get for your Sony cameras, if you do not mind the slower aperture of F4, you just can’t beat the Sony 20-70mm F4 G lens.
This lens has a versatile range that can go as wide as 20mm or go to an almost telephoto territory of 70mm, without you having to change lenses. At 20mm, you can shoot all sorts of wide scenes like spanning landscapes or architecture, while you can punch in and get a closer look at your subject with just a twist of your wrist. The fact that this lens is also branded as a G lens, you can be sure that the image quality you get out of this is going to be awesome.
I used to recommend the Sony 24-105mm F4 lens, but I found the wider 20mm focal length to be a bit more useful than having 105mm on the long end. The 20mm focal length will give you a dramatically different look when compared with 24mm, but between 70mm and 105mm, you won’t get the same effect due to it being on the longer end.
If you often find yourself shooting in daylight most of the time and you do not want to spend more than you need to, the Sony 20-70mm F4 lens is definitely a great bargain. Click the link below to see the most recent price.

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 Lens: For the most affordable all-purpose zoom lens, the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 lens is also highly recommended for those of you who are looking for a great all-around travel lens that is affordable while retaining 85% of the quality of what you get from premium lenses like the Sony G Master lenses.
Tamron has recently upgraded and released a new version of its popular Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 with new glass and technologies, improving upon the optical and autofocus performance while keeping the price the same as the previous version, making it one of the best budget all-around travel lenses out there.
Even though the focal range is not as wide as that of the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 lens, you are ultimately paying less than half the price of the Sony lens. If you do not shoot at 24mm as often, there is no better option out there than the Tamron lens.
The Best Lightweight All-Purpose Lens
Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Lens: Now, if you are not a fan of heavy lenses (and trust me, I know how you feel as I travel with big lenses all the time), one of the lightest all-purpose zoom lenses with a fast aperture you can get is the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens.
This is the smallest and lightest 28-70mm F2.8 lens you can get for Sony cameras, with the lens weight coming in at only 471 grams (1.04 lbs), which is very impressive.
The quality is almost as good as the Tarmon 28-75mm F2.8 G2 lens, but it comes in a much smaller and lighter form factor, making it great for those who are looking to travel light.
If you are weight-watching and looking for the lightest all-purpose zoom lens you can get for Sony cameras, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens is the one for you.
The Best Landscape/Architecture Lens
Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM Lens: If you are looking for the best wide-angle zoom lens for your Sony cameras to shoot landscapes and architecture, the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 lens is really hard to beat.
With the super-wide focal length of 16mm, you will be able to capture more of the landscape and architecture you are seeing, allowing you to get a perspective that you wouldn’t be able to replicate with other lenses, not even with the all-purpose lenses like the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens.
As you can come to expect with the Sony GM lenses, the image quality produced with this lens is extremely sharp from corner to corner. The F2.8 aperture allows you to use the lens in any conditions, which is great for travel as you are often shooting in an uncontrolled environment.
This lens allows you to cover the ranges that the general all-purpose lens, like the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens, can’t capture, which makes it a perfect secondary lens to go with your all-around zoom lens.
I carry this lens in my backpack 100% of the time, and I have the Sony 16-35mm f2.8 GM Lens mounted on my Sony camera 85% of the time. It is really that good! If you are looking for the best lens to shoot landscape/architecture, I guarantee you, you are going to love this lens.
The Best Value Landscape/Architecture Lens
Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Lens: Again, the G Master lenses are not cheap, and it might not be reasonable to buy them, especially if you are just starting out. So, for those of you who are looking for an excellent but affordable architecture/landscape wide-angle lens for your travel, I highly recommend you take a look at the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN lens.
Even though the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN lens is cheaper than the Sony 16-35mm lens, the Sigma lens delivers excellent image quality that is quite comparable to Sony’s GM lens in most situations, but in a much lighter and compact package, making it perfect for travel.
Unlike the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 lens that I recommended earlier, the Sigma lens does go all the way to 16mm, which makes it great for many travel applications. The lens doesn’t go as tight as the Sony GM with its 35mm focal range, but I am happy to sacrifice the tight focal range for a lens that is more compact and lightweight.
Best of all, the price of this lens is more than half of the Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens, making it one of the best-value wide-angle lenses you can get. With such an extremely attractive price point, this Tamron lens even made a Sony avid fan like myself think twice about buying the 2000 USD GM lens over the 900~ USD Sigma lens. If you are looking for an affordable landscape/architecture lens for your Sony camera, this lens is a great option to consider.
The Best Video/Vlogging Lens
Sony PZ 16-35mm F4 G Lens: If you are mainly a video shooter and you are looking for a zoom lens that is versatile and wide enough to vlog with, the Sony PZ 16-35mm F4 G Lens is definitely worth your consideration.
The Sony PZ 16-35mm F4 G Lens is a new series of power zoom lenses that allow you to electronically control your zoom, allowing you to capture smooth footage while zooming in and out. This is a valuable feature for video shooters.
The lens also has an internal zoom barrel that does not extend or collapse while zooming, allowing you to utilize the zoom feature on a gimbal without having to rebalance it every time you zoom.
With the power zoom feature and its versatile focal range, you can perform some really cool video tricks with it as well, like the cinematic dolly zoom technique that is often used in Hollywood films by famous directors like Alfred Hitchcock, etc.
With such a lightweight form factor, this lens is also great for gimbal use as it is light enough for most gimbals, and the internal zoom allows you to zoom in and out without messing up the gimbal balance. There is simply no better video lens to get for your Sony camera than this one.
Best Street Photography Lens
Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Lens: For the best-value lens for street photography, I have to give it to the Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 lens. The lens has a unique focal range of 20-40mm, which covers the classic 35mm length while allowing you to be more flexible and react to the fast-changing situations of street photography.
With its compact size, lightweight, and discrete body, you should be able to blend in with the crowd and take awesome street photos without sacrificing flexibility. Best of all, the lens is very affordable at the retail price of 680 USD. Given the amount of flexibility you will get with this lens, you are definitely getting your money’s worth here.
The lens also comes with an F2.8 aperture, which should be fast enough for the run-and-gun style of shooting that comes with street photography. With such a great price point, incredible flexibility, and the discreetness of its design, the Tamron 20-40mm lens is the best value street photography lens to get for your Sony full-frame camera.
The Best Telephoto Lens
Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Lens: To complete our trinity of fast zoom lenses for your Sony cameras, the best telephoto lens you can get to pair with your Sony 16-35mm F2.8 and Sony 24-70mm F2.8 is the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM II lens.
With this lens, together with the other lenses I listed above, you are essentially covering the telephoto range you are currently missing. This should allow you to shoot more close-up shots of things you might not be able to get up close and personal with, like faraway mountain peaks or people.
The lens comes with a fast aperture of F2.8, allowing you to shoot incredibly sharp images even in the poorest lighting conditions. Not to mention its new autofocus system, which allows you to keep up with fast subjects like birds, and its optical stabilization, which should help smooth out your photos and videos on the longest end.
If you are looking for the best telephoto lens to buy for your Sony cameras, the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM II is a complete package that is hard to beat. Hit the link below to check out the recent price.
The Best Value Telephoto Lens
Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Lens: For those of you who are looking for a more budget-friendly telephoto lens, don’t worry, I’ve got your back. The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 lens is the best telephoto lens to get if your budget is around 1,200 USD.
This lens is the lightest and most compact telephoto lens of its class, with a fast aperture of F2.8, a weight of 800 g (1.79 lbs), and a form factor that is no bigger than a small APS-C telephoto lens. It comes with a fast autofocus mechanism and optical performance that is way beyond its price point.
It is a lens designed specifically for those who are looking for a fast telephoto lens that is travel-friendly, fast enough to capture action shots, and best of all, light on the wallet. If you do not mind the lack of optical stabilization and the 20mm on the wide end, the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 lens is a great alternative to the more expensive Sony GM lens.
The Best Budget Telephoto Lens
Tamron 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Lens: For those of you who are looking for a more compact and affordable option for a wildlife lens, I can’t recommend the Tamron 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 lens enough.
They have managed to give us a 70-300mm focal length, which is great for wildlife, allowing you to bring the animals closer without scaring them away, while keeping the weight low at only 544 grams and costing less than 500 USD. That is an impressive feat, in my opinion.
In order to keep the lens lightweight and affordable, they had to omit a few features such as the custom buttons, plastic build quality, and optical stabilization (OSS). However, with the in-body stabilization (IBIS) features available on most Sony full-frame cameras nowadays, the lack of OSS is not as big of a deal anymore.
Tamron lens is also known for producing tack-sharp images, which is also the case for this lens too. If you are looking to get into wildlife photography and do not want to spend 2,000 USD for a lens, the Tamron 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 lens is, hands down, the best lens to get.
The Best Wildlife Lens
Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 OSS GM Lens: If you are looking for the very best telephoto lens to get for wildlife photography and money and weight are no object, then the crown has to go to the Sony 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM lens. This lens has an incredible focal length of 100-400mm, which will allow you to bring your subject much closer than any other lens.
The Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens is not a small or compact lens in any sense, but relative to the reach it gives you, this is as small as it gets. The lens is also one of the sharpest Sony lenses out there, allowing you to capture crisp and clear images of wild animals like birds or the Big Five during a safari trip.
If you have a little bit of space left in your backpack, 2,500 USD to spare, and are looking for the very best wildlife lens with great reach, this is the one to get.
The Best Budget Wildlife Lens
Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN Lens: For those who are looking for a telephoto lens with a focal range of 100-400mm for wildlife photography and want to save a bit of money, the Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN lens offers a great budget alternative to the Sony GM lens I recommended above.
The lens is designed as an entry-level telephoto lens, and it comes in this handheld-friendly form factor that weighs only 1,100 g (2.43 lbs), a benefit you usually don’t get from a lens with this much reach.
The lens performs really well for its price. It comes equipped with optical stabilization, which is essential when shooting at this range, and a fast and quiet autofocus mechanism that will help you get those sharp wildlife shots you have always wanted to capture. However, the aperture is quite slow, so be sure to use this lens when the light condition is good enough.
Despite its downsides, at only 899 USD retail, this Sigma lens is a steal, especially for the surprisingly great performance, lightweight and compact form factor, and the super-telephoto reach you can get from it. If you are looking for an affordable super-telephoto lens, the Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN is the one to get.
The Best Bird Photography Lens
Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens: Sometimes, you just need as much reach as you can get. This is especially true when it comes to bird photography, and if you are looking for the longest telephoto lens you can get, the Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens is the one to get.
With the incredible reach of 600mm, this is the longest lens you can get before the lens becomes too big to be used handheld. The lens ranges from 200-600mm, allowing you to be flexible with your subject without having to switch lenses.
The lens also works with the Sony 2x teleconverter, allowing the zoom to reach a whopping 1200mm and capture all the fine details of the world to your heart’s content.
If you are looking for the longest possible telephoto lens for your Sony cameras, the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens is the way to go, as long as you don’t mind the size and the slower aperture.
The Best Budget Bird Photography Lens
Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN Lens: If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sony 200-600mm super-telephoto lens with the same reach but way more affordable, the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN lens is definitely worth a look.
This lens has a versatile range of 150-600mm, and it is relatively compact and lightweight, especially when you compare it with the Sony 200-600mm. Amazingly, Sigma was able to make this lens lighter and still give it more reach than all the other competing lenses.
The autofocus may not be as fast as Sony native lenses, but for such a lightweight and compact body and a bargain price of 1,300 USD, it is hard not to recommend the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 lens for those who are looking for a budget wildlife lens.
The Most Versatile Event Lens
Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Lens: This lens is as close to magic as it gets when it comes to lens manufacturing; it almost defies the laws of physics.
Tamron accomplished the impossible with their new lens, providing us with an extremely versatile yet highly fast zoom lens that covers the 35-150mm focal lengths. They achieved this while maintaining an almost equal speed to prime lenses, thanks to its variable F2-2.8 aperture.
This incredible feat of engineering allows us to replace two lenses (all-purpose and telephoto) with one lens without having to sacrifice the ability to shoot in low light like other ultra-zoom lenses out there.
With such reach and a fast aperture range, this lens is one of the best lenses to get if you are looking for a zoom lens to do wedding photography or other indoor events where you often find yourself shooting in poor lighting conditions, like at a concert.
It is a little heavy and bulky, so it isn’t great for travel. However, for other applications where you don’t have to hand-hold the lens all day, the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 lens is definitely hard to beat.

A Simple Guide to All Sony Alpha 7 Lenses: Which E-Mount Full-Frame FE Lens Is the Best for You?

We’re proud owners of a Sony Alpha 7II and we would never want to part without this great camera. In this guide we’ll show you which lenses are available for the Alpha 7 series. If you’re looking for the perfect full-frame lens for E-mount cameras, you’ve come to the right place!
Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras have been around for quite some time now, and there are a vast array of lenses available for the cameras these days.
To give you an up-to-date overview, we’ll give you a rundown of the most interesting lenses currently available for the Sony Alpha 7 cameras in this post.
We’ve provided a link to the product page on Amazon for each featured lens, so you can check the current and look for deals from Amazon Marketplace sellers.
Buying Sony Alpha 7 lenses: What to look out for
Reading through some of the questions from our readers, we’ve noticed that there’s quite a bit of confusion when it comes to Sony lenses. So we thought it would be helpful to start with a general introduction.
A-mount vs. E-mount: What’s the difference?
Sony lenses come with two different mounts: A-mount and E-mount.
E-mount lenses are designed for Sony’s range of mirrorless system cameras (Alpha 7 series, Alpha 6000 and 5000 series, and NEX series).
A-mount lenses only work on Sony’s range of DSLRs.
So not every Sony lens fits on every Sony camera. That’s why you should always make sure to buy an E-mount lens if you own a mirrorless system camera from Sony.
Most online stores, including Amazon, feature the mount and compatible camera systems in the product title on their websites. If you’re still unsure if the lens is compatible, just browse the product description or use Amazon’s handy “Confirmed Fit” checker.
Here’s an easy way to tell them apart: Model numbers for E-mount lenses start with “SEL”, while numbers for A-mount lenses start with “SAL”.
Full format vs. APS-C: What’s the difference?
There are also differences within the E-mount lens range. While the Alpha 7 series cameras come with a full-format sensor installed, the Alpha 6000 series, for example, uses an APS-C sensor.
This affects how the lenses perform on the different camera types. So always make sure it says something like “suitable for full frame” when you’re shopping for Alpha 7 lenses.
Or you can just carry on reading this guide because all the lenses we’ll be presenting here are suitable for full frame and are fully compatible with the following cameras:
- Sony Alpha 1
- Sony Alpha 7
- Sony Alpha 7 II
- Sony Alpha 7 III
- Sony Alpha 7R
- Sony Alpha 7R II
- Sony Alpha 7R III
- Sony Alpha 7R IV
- Sony Alpha 7S
- Sony Alpha 7S II
- Sony Alpha 7S III
- Sony Alpha 7C
- Sony Alpha 9
- Sony Alpha 9 II
Can I use a Sony Alpha 6000 lens on a Sony Alpha 7 camera?
As we mentioned above, there are E-mount lenses made specifically for full-frame cameras such as the Sony Alpha 7 II and lenses for APS-C cameras such as the Sony Alpha 6000.
They use the same mount, so that you can use all lenses listed here on both systems. Just be aware that the focal length will vary from system to system because of the so-called crop factor.
In a nutshell: As a rule, you can can use all E-mount lenses on both systems. We still recommend that you use the lenses designed specifically for your camera format.
If you want to learn more about APS-C sensor lenses for Sony cameras, we’ve also compiled also a detailed overview of the most important lenses available in that format:
Sony Alpha 7 lenses by third-party manufacturers
Most lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series are produced by Sony itself, as well as by Zeiss.
Some of the Zeiss lenses are marketed under the Sony brand, others directly under the Zeiss brand.
But nowadays, you can also choose from a number of lenses for the Alpha 7 series produced by third-party manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma.
There are quite a few third-party manufacturers in the prime lens segment, ranging from relatively low-cost lenses by Samyang to highly specialized lenses by high-end manufacturers such as Meyer Optik Görlitz and Voigtländer.
We have nothing bad to say about third-party lenses in general. We actually use Tamron lenses ourselves and are very happy with them. So you might also want to consider going third party to take advantage of a wider range of options or better value for money.
E-mount full-frame zoom lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series
Let’s kick things off with the typical zoom lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series. There’s a considerable range of options in this category, so we’re going to start with our two absolute favorites.
Amazing value for money: Tamron 28-75 mm, f/2.8
Our tip for price-conscious photographers!
After a long period of hesitation,Tamron finally released a lens for full-frame E-mount cameras. And it packs quite a punch!
With 28 to 75 mm, the lens covers the most important focal lengths for everyday use and of course a fixed aperture of f/2.8 is really great too.
Another major advantage is its low weight of only 550 grams.
But the absolute best thing about it is its low price: You can get the Tamron 28-75 for less than 700 euros!
The premium zoom lens: Sony 24-70 mm, f/2.8
Our tip for maximum quality!
The best, but also most expensive choice among the zoom lenses for the Alpha 7 series is the 24-70 mm G Master lens with an aperture of f/2.8.
Sony’s G Master lenses promise a particularly high level of detail and outstanding bokeh. After weighing the pros and cons, we went ahead and bought this lens and are absolutely thrilled with it.
The picture quality really raises the bar and the fixed aperture of f/2.8 makes this lens a reliable companion even in bad lighting conditions.
Even though the lens is far from a bargain at around 1,800 euros, we’d buy it again in a heartbeat.
The simple kit lens: Sony 28-70 mm, f/3.5-5.6
Kit deals are also available for professional cameras. Who would have thought? Since it was barely more expensive than just buying the body, we also bought our cameras in a kit with the 28-70 mm, f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens included.
We can already hear some of you protesting, “Why would you put a kit lens on such an expensive camera?!”
But this time, the outcry is unwarranted – this lens offers a more than decent image quality and we recommend it wholeheartedly.
For example, we took all the photos on our trip to Myanmar with this lens. So go ahead and check those out and judge the image quality for yourself!
If you haven’t bought a Sony Alpha 7 III yet, we recommend purchasing the camera in a kit. That way, you’ll spend a bit less on the lens than if bought separately. Sold individually, it’s currently available for about 300 to 400 euros.
The very compact kit lens: Sony 28-60 mm, f/4-5.6
This lens is also available in a kit with the Sony Alpha 7C, a very compact full-frame camera from Sony. And so of course the lens is compact as well.
It actually only weighs about 167 grams, fits in the smallest. and doesn’t put so much strain on your shoulders.
Of course with a lens that compact, there are some trade-offs in performance. For example, the lens only has an initial aperture of f/4-5.6. It isn’t protected against dust and splash water, and there are certainly better lenses in terms of image quality.
Nevertheless, the lens is an affordable starting point for getting into photography, especially when purchased in a kit. And its compact size really comes in handy when you’re traveling. The lens currently costs 380 euros on its own. That’s an okay price, but you can save even more money buying it in a kit.
The better kit lens: Sony / Zeiss 24-70 mm, f/4
The Sony SEL2470Z offers even higher quality than the 28-70. It has a good resolution in all zoom ranges, a fixed aperture of f/4, and a slightly wider angle of view than the 28-70 mm.
An all-around satisfying and high-quality lens with Zeiss technology for everyday use.
Of course quality has its price: Sony’s recommended retail price is 1,249.00 euros, but you should able to pick one up for around 700 euros.
Kit offers for this lens are particularly attractive. The Sony Alpha 7 II with the 24-70 mm lens is available for about 1,700 euros.
Cheaper premium alternative: Sigma Art 24-70 mm, f/2.8
The Sigma 24 to 70 mm is part of Sigma’s Art series. These lenses were developed specifically for high demands on image quality.
And this lens certainly lives up to those demands. It can easily go toe to toe with the Sony 24 to 70 mm. Top image quality, fast, quiet, and slightly more compact and lighter than the Sony G Master.

And the best part: The lens costs about 600 euros less than its Sony counterpart at 1,200 euros.
A bigger zoom lens: Sony 24-105 mm, f/4
The 24-105 mm lens is the latest zoom lens released by Sony.
Its zoom range of 24 to 105 mm offers the perfect focal length for a wide variety of situations. One great advantage is its relatively low weight of 663 grams, which is significantly lighter than other Sony zoom lenses.
These specs make this lens is a worthy competitor to the Tamron lens profiled above. While its wider focal length range focal is certainly very impressive, it has a considerably smaller aperture.
This lens is priced at around 1,300 euros.
For recording video: Sony 28-135 mm, f/4
This lens was designed specifically for the requirements of recording video.
The dedicated Smooth Motion Optics design provides the best possible image quality for filming and the precise and quiet autofocus is perfectly suited for the requirements of filming.
With a weight of 1.2 kg and a price of about 2,000 euros, this lens is primarily intended for use as a specialized tool for professional video recording.
The travel zoom lens: Sony 24-240 mm, f/3.5-6.3
The SEL24240 is an all-rounder for on the road. It has the largest zoom range of all full-frame E-mount lenses.
The SEL24240 is protected against dust and moisture and is a good always-on lens for your travels, whether you’re shooting snapshots, landscapes, or wildlife photos. The only drawback is the weight of 780 grams, but that’s still low compared to most telephoto lenses.
While it can’t rival a specialized lens in terms of quality, it’s still a great choice for traveling. It’s currently priced at around 800 euros.
Travel zoom alternative: Tamron 28-200 mm, f/2.8-5.6
Tamron also has an all-rounder of their own in their product range. There are hardly any differences to the Sony.
The most noticeable difference is that the Sony has a slightly wider focal length range of 24-240 mm. The Tamron has a range of 28-200 mm. But that doesn’t make much of a difference in practice.
The closest focusing distance, i.e. the minimum distance you have to keep to your subject to get it in FOCUS, is significantly lower with the Tamron. That’s 19 cm compared to 50 cm with the Sony. While that’s still far from macro, you can definitely get much closer to small flowers or similar subjects.
The lens is very similar to the Sony, so it’s more a matter of taste which lens you prefer. Like the Sony, the Tamron is also priced at around 800 euros.
Wide angle lenses for the Alpha 7 series
When it comes to wide angle zoom lenses, the selection is fairly limited. Sony has a total of three lenses on offer, which are very good but unfortunately also very pricey. Then there’s also one from Tamron and another from Sigma.
Zeiss 16-35 mm, f/4
This is one of very few wide-angle zoom lenses available for the Alpha 7 series, but it leaves nothing to be desired. We own this lens ourselves and are very satisfied with it.
The maximum aperture is f/4, which is perfectly fine for a wide angle. The zoom range of 16-35 mm gives you a lot of flexibility for different situations, so you can leave this lens on the camera a lot of the time.
This lens is currently priced at around 1,100 euros.
Sony 16-35 mm, f/2.8
A brand new G Master version of the 16-35 mm has just been released. With an aperture of f/2.8 and the image quality the G Master lenses are famous for, this lens is the absolute cream of the crop when it comes to wide-angle lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series.
Of course all this has its price, and it’s quite steep at about 2,300 euros.
Price recommendation: Tamron 17-28 mm, f/2.8
This lens isn’t just cheap in comparison, but cheap in general for a lens with these specs. It only costs 850 euros! That’s considerably cheaper than any of the other wide-angle lenses featured here.
It has a very compact build, is sealed against dust and splash water, and even comes with a filter thread. What’s more, it has a practical zoom range of 17-28 mm and a very good lens speed of f/2.8.
Of course, the picture quality is also perfectly fine. A clear recommendation at that price!
Sony 12-24 mm, f/4
For a long time there were hardly any alternatives for full-format cameras with an E-mount in the field of wide-angle lenses, but now Sony has finally added one to its range.
This 12-24 mm lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that meets the highest demands. The price for this lens is about 1,600 euros, so it’s not exactly a bargain.
Sigma 14-24 mm, f/2.8
In terms of focal length range, this lens is a direct competitor to the Sony 12-24 mm f/4. However, the Sigma is significantly faster with an aperture of f/2.8 and still only slightly heavier at around 795 grams.
Quality-wise, it’s a great lens. We definitely recommend it over the Sony 12-24 and if you can live without 35 mm, also over the Zeiss 16-35 or the Sony G Master. And last but not least, the lens is also comparatively affordable at around 1,450 euros.
Telephoto lenses for the Alpha 7 series
There are a total of three telephoto lenses for the E-mount full frame, which all have a relatively similar aperture range.
The lightest zoom lens: Sony 70-300 mm, f/4.5-5.6
This lens offers a larger zoom range with a focal length of 70-300 mm. The downside is the underwhelming aperture between f/4.5 and 5.6.
On the other hand, with a weight of 850 grams, this lens is pretty light. It’s priced at around 1,100 euros.
Best focal length: Sony 200-600 mm, f/5.6-6.3
The Sony SEL200600G boasts the widest focal length range of any Alpha 7 telephoto lens by a long shot.
No other lens on the market comes close to its maximum focal length of 600 mm. If that sounds appealing to you, you’ll have to invest around 1,700 euros.
Fast telephoto zoom: Tamron 70-180 mm, f/2.8
The Tamron 70 to 180 mm is a real insider tip. The lens has a speed of f/2.8 in combination with a focal length of 70 to 180 mm. It’s very compact for this type of lens and only weighs 815 grams.
The image quality is very good, and thanks to the open aperture, the lens is ideal for portraits as well as sports photography.
One drawback is that this lens doesn’t have an integrated image stabilizer. However, almost all mirrorless full-frame cameras from Sony now come with an integrated stabilizer of their own, so there’s no need for one in the lens.
Nevertheless, this lens gets clear a recommendation from us, and it’s also reasonably priced at around 1,100 euros.
Macro lenses for the mirrorless full-frame cameras from Sony
Nowadays, there are several macro lenses available for Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras. Here are our favorites:
Sony 50 mm, f/2.8
It starts with the 50 mm from Sony. This lens is a macro lens and it does its job very well.
If you’re interested in macro photography and are looking for the right lens for the Alpha 7 series, this is a very good choice. The price is also pretty reasonable at just under 470 euros.
Sigma Art 70 mm, f/2.8
The macro lens from Sigma with a focal length of 70 mm belongs to Sigma’s Art series, which stands for the highest optical performance.
The lens is very sharp, but the autofocus could be a bit faster. Still, you get a very good lens for your money. It currently costs about 500 euros.
Sony 90 mm, f/2.8
At the higher end of the focal length scale below the prime lenses with autofocus is Sony’s 90 mm lens, which was specially designed to meet the requirements of macro photography.
The lens is pretty bulky and definitely not a lightweight, but it does an excellent job at macro photography. It’s priced at just under 1,000 euros.
Sigma Art 105 mm, f/2.8
This lens is a very good and slightly cheaper alternative to the 90 mm macro lens from Sony.
It belongs to Sigma’s Art series and thus has a very high-quality build and provides excellent image quality.
What’s more, there are several switches on the lens to manually adjust the aperture, change the autofocus mode, and even a button that you can program yourself.
For the performance and the low price of about 750 euros, this lens is our recommendation for macro photography.
E-mount full-frame prime lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series
There’s a much wider range of prime lenses with a fixed focal length available for the Sony Alpha 7 series.
Not only Zeiss and Sony, but also numerous third-party manufacturers have staked their claim in this segment.
There are more than 50 prime lenses for E-mount full frame.
To keep this post from going on forever, we’ll only be profiling lenses that use autofocus.
We’ve listed the lenses without autofocus below, but without a full profile. Let’s get started.
Prime lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series WITH autofocus
The following section features the prime lenses available for full-frame E-mount. We’ve sorted the lenses in ascending order by focal length.
Samyang 14 mm, f/2.8
This 14 mm wide angle lens is one of only two lenses with autofocus for the Alpha 7 series made by Samyang.
The lens offers good image quality, is fast, and at a price of less than 600 euros, it’s also pretty good value for money.
Biggest drawback: The lens hood is fixed so you can’t attach any screw-on filters.
Sony 14 mm, f/1.8
The Sony 14 mm is the perfect lens for taking photos of the starry sky at night. But of course, the lens is also superb during the day.
With its focal length of 14 mm, the lens falls into the wide-angle category. It offers incredible image quality, but at a very high price. You should expect to pay about 1,500 euros.
Zeiss Batis 18 mm, f/2.8
Zeiss delivers a high-quality wide-angle prime lens with its 18 mm lens from the Batis series.
The lens is ideal for landscape photography. The image quality is outstanding, even with an open aperture. The lens is also protected against dust and splash water.
It’s also relatively expensive at just under 1,200 euros.
Sigma Art 20 mm, f/1,4
After a long absense from the E-mount full-frame camera market, Sigma has finally introduced several prime lenses from its popular Art series.
One of them is the 20 mm with an aperture of f/1.4. The lens is perfect for landscape and architecture photographs. It costs about 800 euros.
Sony 20 mm, f/1.8
Another wide-angle lens from Sony. This one has very high-quality build, the product of excellent optical and technical workmanship. And the image quality is impeccable.
Whatvs great about this lens is its very compact design despite the large aperture. It only weighs about 373 grams, making it an excellent choice for travel photography.
The lens costs about 900 euros.
Tamron 20mm, f/2,8
Tamron released two very promising new prime lenses in November 2019.
The 20 mm offers the widest angle of view, while also allowing you to shoot photos from a close-up distance of 11 cm. This is the first lens in this category that can take macro shots at a scale of 1:2.
The lens only weighs 220 grams and costs around 325 euros.
Tamron 24mm, f/2.8
The 24 mm wide-angle also allows for a tiny closest focusing distance of 12 cm. That means you can use the lens for both landscape and close-up photography.
And weighing in at around 200 grams, it’s also relatively light, making it a superb travel accessory.
The Tamron 24 mm is available starting at around 400 euros.
Sigma Art 24 mm, f/1.4
The Sigma Art 24 mm is also a very fast lens and great for night shots. The only difference to the 20 mm is the narrower angle of view.
That could make it more challenging if you want to include some of the landscape in your pictures of the night sky, for example. But it’s lighter than the 20 mm and also a little bit cheaper at about 700 euros.
Sony 24 mm, f/1.4
The G Master series are the premium lenses by Sony. They are incredibly good, but also incredibly expensive.
For example, you can expect to pay almost 1,400 euros for the 24 mm prime lens. But for that money you get an excellent lens that works perfectly even in low light conditions.
Zeiss Batis 25 mm, f/2
The Zeiss 25-series is already considered a classic among the wide-angle prime lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series. It’s frequently cited as the best wide-angle lens for E-mount cameras.
The lens is very fast with an aperture of f/2. It’ll take up a fair bit of space in your camera backpack, but at least it’s relatively light.
It’s priced at around 1,000 euros, but the lens is definitely worth it.

Sony 28 mm, f/2
This lens is a great place to dip your toes into the world of prime lenses if you don’t want to go all-in right away. With its f/2 aperture, it’s very fast and takes good pictures even in low light conditions.
The autofocus works reliably and at a price of around 400 euros you can’t really go wrong with this lens.
Tamron 35mm, f/2.8
With its 35mm fixed focal length, this lens is perfect for everyday situations, from portrait photography to landscape shots.
What’s more, the lens is a lightweight at only about 200 grams and fits in just about any photographer’s camera bag.
Sony 35 mm, f/2.8
The somewhat lighter wide-angle lens from Zeiss is very well suited for landscape and street photography.
The lens is small and compact, making it the perfect match for the similarly compact Alpha 7 cameras.
The lens costs around 600 euros and won’t take up much space in your camera bag.
Sony Zeiss 35 mm, f/1.4
And yet another 35 mm prime lens from Sony. This lens excels with its incredible lens speed of f/1.4. However, that also means it’s very bulky and heavy.
But the image quality is excellent and the bokeh is also very impressive. This lens is priced at around 1,000 euros.
Samyang 35 mm, f/2.8
This lens from Samyang is a very good alternative to Sony’s own lenses in the 35 mm fixed focal length range.
Especially the small size and the light weight make this lens so interesting. The image quality is good and the price is still reasonable at around 200 euros.
Samyang 35 mm, f/1.4
This lens by Samyang adds even more heat to the competition in the 35mm fixed focal length segment.
You can get this lens with an aperture of f/1.4 for less than 500 euros. The quality may not be on par wih the Sony lens, but it only costs a third of the price.
Sigma Art 35 mm, f/1.4
A very popular “always on” lens for many amateur and professional photographers. Not only is it wonderfully fast, but it’s also handy for a variety of purposes, from landscape photography to close-ups with great bokeh.
That makes it an amazing bargain at a price of less than 800 euros.
Sigma Art 35 mm, f/1.2
Sigma also offers a 35 mm lens. This lens was developed especially for mirrorless full-frame cameras and is reported to perform even better on the camera than the Sigma 35mm lens profiled above.
It’s also a bit faster with a lens speed of f/1.2 and the image quality is exceptional. And so is the price. The lens currently sells for about 1,350 euros.
Samyang 45 mm, f/1.8
Samyang has quite a few lenses with autofocus in its range nowadays. All of them are of high quality, but still comparatively cheap compared to most Sony or Sigma lenses.
The 45 mm is special because the focal length is rather unusual. The normal focal length for full-frame lenses is typically around 50 mm. In purely mathematical terms, however, 45 mm is closer to the field of vision of the human eye, making this lens an interesting alternative.
This lens offers good value for money and stands out from the usual suspects.
Sony 50 mm, f/1.8
A very light and powerful lens at only 186 grams, easy to use for beginners. It takes very sharp pictures with an open aperture and can conjure up very pretty bokeh effects.
We were lucky enough to snatch up a bargain at a clearance sale, but even at full price, it’s a very affordable lens. The image quality is simply outstanding for the price, but unfortunately the autofocus is very loud and slow. If you can live with that, this lens is definitely a good investment at less than 200 euros.
Samyang 50 mm, f/1.4
Samyang offers another inexpensive alternative with its 50 mm lens.
The image quality is very good and the lens is extremely fast with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. Only the autofocus leaves something to be desired with this lens.
But it still might be worth considering due to its low price of about 500 euros.
Sony 50 mm, f/1.4
Sony also offers its own 50 mm, and it’s an absolute top-of-the-range lens. The lens stands out due to its great resolution, high lens speed, and super-smooth bokeh.
It’s quite bulky for a 50 mm lens, but the photo quality is excellent all around. The price isn’t exactly low at just under 1,400 euros. But then again, it’s certainly justified for a high-quality lens with Zeiss technology.
Sony 55 mm, f/1.8
This lens offers superb image quality even in low light conditions, beautiful bokeh effects, and a fast autofocus.
Sharpness, contrast, and the colors of the images turn out almost perfect, and at a price of about 750 euros this lens is almost a bargain.
Samyang 75 mm, f/1.8
This lens from Samyang also has an unusual focal length with its 75 mm. 85 mm is more common for portrait lenses, but the 75 mm in combination with its aperture of f/1.8 is just as capable of producing a great background blur, so you can really make your subject stand out.
For about 360 euros you get a very compact lens that’s ideally suited for portrait photography.
Sony 85 mm, f/1.4, portrait lens
The 85mm lens for Sony E-mount is probably one of the best portrait lenses on the market today. With its 821 grams, the lens isn’t exactly a lightweight, but it delivers excellent images.
The autofocus is very precise, while the sharpness and the level of detail are simply outstanding. Every hair of your model will be visible on the picture, that’s how sharp this lens shoots.
Of course, all this comes at a price. You’ll have to put down about 1,500 euros for this premium lens.
Zeiss 85 mm, f/1.8 portrait lens
The 85 mm lens from Zeiss is considerably lighter and also much cheaper. It’s also a very good lens for portraits, has an optical image stabilizer, and of course it’s very fast.
It’s also relatively light for its size and handles well. The sharpness of the aperture is great, and so is the bokeh. The Batis also has an OLED display, which shows depth of field and FOCUS distance.
The lens exhibits typical Zeiss quality workmanship, although the plastic lens hood is a bit of a disappointment disappointing. But all in all, it’s a high quality lens that could be yours for about 1,000 euros.
Sony 85 mm, f/1.8
Aside from the premium lens, Sony also offers a second 85mm lens.
It has an aperture of f/1.8 and a surprisingly good image quality. At 500 euros, this portrait lens definitely offers the best value for money in the market.
Sigma Art 85 mm, f/1.4
As with the other lenses, this Sigma is a slightly cheaper alternative to its Sony counterpart.
Once again, Sigma also places a premium on quality with this lens, so you can buy this lens without second thought and still expect performance on par with Sony’s G Master lens.
And you can save a lot of money, because this lens costs about 1,000 euros – a good 600 euros less than the Sony.
Sony 100 mm, f/2.8
At first glance, this 100 mm lens from Sony’s G Master series with an aperture of f/2.8 wouldn’t seem to offer anything that would justify a price of 1,400 euros.
But take another look and you’ll be blown away because the lens excels with outstanding sharpness and an exceptional bokeh.
Sigma Art 105 mm, f/1.4
The second Sigma Art lens is a top-notch portrait lens. With a focal length of 105 mm and an aperture of f/1.4 it allows for wonderful bokeh and leaves nothing to be desired.
The price of around 1,400 euros may put some people off. But once you hold the lens in your hand, you’ll appreciate why it’s so expensive!
Zeiss 135 mm, f/2.8 telephoto portrait lens
The 135 mm Zeiss Batis is a portrait lens with a fixed focal length of 135 mm. As usual for Zeiss, it meets the highest standards.
But then at a price of 1,400 euros, it isn’t just playing in the big leagues in terms of quality.
Sony 135 mm, f/1.8
We’d say that the Sony 135 mm is the better alternative to the Zeiss 135 mm. The main difference is the higher lens speed of f/1.8, which makes it much easier to create a bokeh effect.
The autofocus is also reportedly faster than the Zeiss, making it so much more convenient for portraits in low light or with moving subjects.
The lens is a bit more expensive than the Zeiss lens at about 1,600 euros. However, it’s definitely worth the higher price.
Prime lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 series WITHOUT autofocus
And then there is a huge selection of prime lenses without autofocus for the Alpha 7 series. Manual focusing works very well with the Alpha 7 cameras’ FOCUS-peaking function, so these lenses are certainly an alternative.
Since the selection is simply too large, we’ve made a list of all the available lenses. Once again, we’ve sorted them by focal length:

The best Sony E-mount lenses in 2023
A list of the best Sony E-mount lenses is an exciting thing to compile – honestly, it is! Over the past decade, Sony has been quite adventurous with its lens range, coming out with interesting unique optics in a variety of focal ranges, as well as superb versions of the classics, from nifty-fifties to the good old 70-200mm. Then there’s also the fact that Sony has always been very free with opening its mount up to third-party manufacturers, meaning the likes of Sigma and Tamron have had time to build up compelling stables of alternative lenses. Without a doubt, Sony E-mount is an exciting place to me.
Which Sony E-mount lens is right for you is going to depend on a few key things, though the main ones are quite simple. What camera do you use, and what you intend to shoot with it? If you’re using, say, the high-resolution full-frame Sony A7R V to produce stunning landscape images for printing, then your lens needs are going to be quite different than if you were using the affordable APS-C Sony A6000 for day-to-day snapshots or street shooting. And you might not be taking photos at all – after all, Sony’s compelling range of vlogger cameras such as the Sony ZV-E1 also use the E-mount.
That’s why we’ve attempted to give you a helping hand by reserving this guide for the best of the best. All of the lenses on this list have been given the once over by our technical team, either for a full review or a extended field test. If you’re still searching for a camera too then check out our guide to the best Sony cameras – otherwise read on as we drill down into how to choose the right Sony E-mount lens.
How to choose the best Sony E-mount lens
All the different lens options can be overwhelming, especially to a newcomer to the system. Here are some of the key things to look out for when choosing a Sony lens.
Focal length: This is probably the first consideration on your list when selecting a lens, as the focal length of a lens will radically transform the look of an image. The focal length of a lens is expressed in millimetres (mm), and it governs both the angle of view and the magnification of a scene. Short lenses (8-35mm) produce a wide field of view, and are popular for big expansive scenes such as in landscape photography or group photos at weddings. Long lenses (generally 85mm or more) produce a narrow, zoomed-in view, which brings distant subjects closer and is popular in wildlife photography. Standard lenses (around 40mm-75mm) produce a more naturalistic view, and are often used in street photography.
Zoom or prime? Ah, the age-old question. ink has been spilled on this than we have space for here, so check out our dedicated guide to zoom vs prime lenses for a rundown on the pros and cons of each type.
Image Stabilisation: The majority of recent Sony E-Mount mirrorless cameras have built-in image stabilisation, or IBIS (In-body image stabilisation), which Sony call “SteadyShot INSIDE” which helps keep your shots sharp and blur free. If you’re looking for additional stabilisation, look for a lens with “OSS” – Optical SteadyShot – as this will work in combination with the in-camera stabilisation to give an even more powerful stabilising effect. If your camera doesn’t feature SteadyShot INSIDE, then you’ll doubly want to look for a lens with OSS, otherwise you’ll have no stabilisation at all.
Aperture ring: While aperture settings can be controlled in camera, many photographers prefer having a physical ring on the lens to change the setting. You may also see references to an aperture ring being “clickless” – this means it doesn’t make any noise when changing setting, which is very handy for video.
Another thing to pay attention to is the crop factor. Sony E-mount lenses come in two varieties – full-frame (Sony FE) and APS-C (Sony E). Full-frame lenses can be used with both the full-frame mirrorless cameras like the A7 series, and APS-C cameras like the A6000 series. The ZV series of vlogging cameras come in both varieties, with the mirrorless ZV-E10 being an APS-C model, while the newer ZV-E1 sports a full-frame sensor.
(For details of the key differences between the two sensor sizes, take a look at our guide to full-frame vs APS-C: which sensor size is best?)
We’ve divided our guide up into sections, first dealing with full-frame lenses, then picking our favourite APS-C lenses. See the section intros below for an explainer of how the lenses and cameras work with each other…

Best Sony FE-Mount Lenses for full-frame and APS-C
The following lenses are designed for Sony’s full-frame Alpha cameras, on which they will deliver their stated focal length; i.e. a 50mm lens will deliver a 50mm effective focal length. If you’re using an APS-C Sony mirrorless camera, such as the Sony Alpha A6600, or Sony ZV-E10, these lenses will also work, but with a 1.5x crop factor.
This means they will have a narrower effective focal length than the one listed on the box, e.g. a 50mm lens will behave like a 75mm lens. See our guide to APS-C vs Full-Frame for more on how this works. Some of them may feel also a little large on the smaller camera bodies.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master OSS II is the 2nd generation of the 70-200 f/2.8 lens from Sony, and this new model offers the lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens for any system, weighing just 1,045g. It also delivers excellent levels of sharpness throughout the zoom range, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a versatile zoom lens. There’s Rapid FOCUS, and direct aperture control on the lens, making it easy to use, with great results time after time.

This lens is essentially a mirrorless version of a DSLR classic; the original Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | Art radically rewrote the book on what we could expect to see from large-aperture primes in terms of sharpness. Of course, other firms swiftly followed Sigma’s lead, Sony among them, and so the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art lens for Sony E-mount entered a much more crowded field. How does it fare compared to the competition?
This is an outright stunning lens – in our review we gave it the full five stars, praising its exceptional sharpness right the way through the frame. We also loved its rugged construction and speedy, reliable autofocus. Its main rival from Sony, the FE 50mm f/1.4 G Master Lens, is a spectacular lens to be sure, but it’s also almost double the price. While the G Master is both lighter and sharper, the tremendous value of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art makes it the best choice for most users.
- Excellent sharpness across frame
- Tough and weather-resistant
- Tremendous value for money
Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS

At a glance:
- Filter thread: 95mm

- Weight: 2,115g
- New price: 1,998 / £1,599
- Used price 1,599-1,749 / £1,349-1,399
For most users, the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS is going to be the best Sony lens for wildlife photography. It’s a sensibly priced alternative to many of the high-end telephoto primes used by professionals, which generally carry five-figure price tags. The reach it provides makes it in theory an excellent lens for capturing images of birds and wildlife, as well as perhaps aviation shows or motorsport events. But how does the lens fare in practice?
In our full field test, we took the lens for a spin at Bough Beech nature reserve in Kent, aiming to capture bird-in-flight images of the wildfowl that make their home there. Throughout the two weeks our reviewer spent putting the FE 200-600mm through its paces, the lens consistently impressed. Focusing was consistent and reliable, aided by the FOCUS limiter switch that allows you to restrict the FOCUS distance range to 10m-2.4m or infinity to 10m, depending on where your subject is likely to appear. The OSS stabilisation system works extremely well too, and the surprisingly short stature of the lens makes it easier to transport than you might have assumed (though still not exactly a featherweight).
Of course, compromises had to come somewhere, and the relatively modest aperture rating of this lens means you may find yourself pushing up the ISO on your camera more often than you want to. We suspect though that this is a sacrifice a lot of photographers are willing to make for a £10K saving.
- Fast, reliable focusing
- Excellent optical performance
- Fantastic value for money
Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G
We found the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G to be a thoroughly enjoyable lens to use. Photo credit: Andy Westlake
At a glance:
- Filter thread: 72mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.3-0.25m
- Weight: 488g
- New price: 1,098 / £1,399
- Used price 944 / £1150
The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is a standard zoom with an unusually wide field of view at its widest end, giving the user a little more range than they’d get from a standard 24-70mm. Sony touts it as a good choice for vloggers and videographers – a label they slap on pretty much everything they produce nowadays – and also suggests it as a lightweight, portable choice for landscape photography who don’t want to carry too much. With excellent sharpness and a weatherproof build, it certainly makes a good case for itself in this area. Close-up performance is also first-rate.
The only real stumbling block is the cost – at almost 1,098 / £1,399, this is an ambitiously priced lens to say the least, especially when it’s covering a focal range most photographers will already have options for. Still, if you can justify the expense, this is an all-around excellent lens.

At a glance:
- Filter thread: 67mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.29m
- Weight: 659g
- Price: 629 / £529
An update to a lens design that first appeared in 2017, the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4 FE II is yet another compelling argument why mirrorless manufacturers should open up their lens mounts to third-party lens-makers (yes, Canon, that one’s aimed at you). Aggressively priced at 629 / £529, this is one of the cheapest lenses of its type, a wide-aperture prime that produces images with smooth bokeh in the defocused areas of images. Previous Samyang lenses have suffered from middling-to-wonky autofocus, and while the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4 FE II isn’t the fastest lens on the block, our testing revealed its autofocusing to be consistently fast and reliable in most situations.
- Great value for money
- Large aperture with lovely bokeh
- Consistently good optical quality

- Used price: 1,099-1,149 / £1,099-1,149
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 G Master lens is another premium lens from Sony, offering superb sharpness even wide open, with excellent handling and operation, in a relatively small and light lens, with metal construction. The lens benefits from silent, and accurate autofocus, as well as a manual aperture ring with both click and clickless operation. As part of the G Master range, the lens is designed for both excellent levels of sharpness, with beautiful and attractive bokeh or background blur. It’s undoubtedly a pricey lens, especially compared to the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4 FE II lens featured above, but the quality you get for money is inarguable.
Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 G Master

- Weight: 950g
- New price: 2,098 / £1,599
- Used price 1.089-1,349 / £1.049-1,099
The Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 G Master lens could be considered the perfect portrait lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, with superb resolution, even at maximum aperture, as well as attractive bokeh. The lens features fast and accurate autofocus, as well as an aperture ring that can be used with clicks, or clickless.
There are some downsides, in that the lens is rather bulky and heavy weighing 950g, as well as being very expensive, when compared to alternatives from Sigma. However, as we said in our review, the combination of supreme sharpness and gorgeous bokeh is likely to appeal strongly to portrait and wedding photographers.’
- Exceptional image quality
- Produces gorgeous bokeh
- Outstanding for portraiture

That is to say, it’s excellent; it offers exceptional image quality, being difficult to beat in terms of sheer resolving power. You also benefit from built-in Optical Steady Shot (OSS), helping you keep shots steady and free from blur. Plus, it doubles as a great portrait lens, and can take detailed photographs of any subject.

- New price: 1,798 / £1,499
- Used price: 1,059-1110 / £1,300
The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master lens is a bright 85mm lens, that could be the ideal portrait lens, with impressive sharpness in the centre, even when shooting wide-open. There’s also the excellent build quality that you expect from a G Master lens, as well as dust and moisture resistance. Like other G Master lenses, you get an aperture ring with with clickless option. However, there are some downsides, as it is quite weighty at 820g, and it’s also rather expensive.

Third-party lenses are often a good bet when looking to expand your system, offering premium performance at a cut-down price. The Sigma 20mm f/2 DG DN | C is a prime lens providing excellent value for money, and is a good budget-friendly alternative to Sony’s own FE 20mm f/1.8 G (featured a few entries down from this one). In testing, we found that this lens handled fantastically on the Sony A7R IV, creating a perfectly balanced setup, and its optical performance was superb. It’s sharp throughout the aperture range, only getting a little soft at f/22.

All compact, with aperture ring and custom function button, making them great if you want to travel light. The Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G lens offers great sharpness, with minimal chromatic aberration, and a metal hood is included. It’s also one of the lightest lenses featured in this list, weighing just 173g.

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is an ultra wide-angle prime lens, with a relatively bright aperture of f/1.8, as well as a relatively compact size. The lens has a close FOCUS distance of 18/19cm (MF/AF), and there’s a 67mm filter thread on the front of the lens. There’s direct access to the aperture, with the aperture ring on the lens, as well as the option to use the aperture ring ‘clickless’ meaning that Sony has also considered videographers when making this lens. The lens performs extremely well, capable of delivering sharp images, even when shooting wide-open at f/1.8.

The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens is relatively small and lightweight, with an aperture ring, making it a great match if you’re looking for a small(er) lens without compromising on image quality. In our testing we found the lens’ sharpness to be absolutely outstanding – we would have been happy shooting all day at f/2.8, and things got even crisper as we stopped down.
Elsewhere, there’s an 82mm filter thread, and the lens has a relatively close FOCUS distance of 21-30cm. Thanks to its weather-sealing it’s a perfect match for Sony’s weather sealed mirrorless cameras.

This lens offers a useful zoom range from 24mm to 105mm, with the f/4 aperture helping to keep the size down. Optical steady shot (OSS) means you can use it with E-Mount cameras that don’t feature in-body image stabilisation, and still benefit from optical image stabilisation. When we reviewed this lens we found that it was consistently sharp at all focal lengths, with fast and silent autofocus. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS lens is also relatively compact and lightweight, with an impressive resistance to flare. For an all-in-one zoom lens, this one certainly delivers above expectations.

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 G Master is the largest aperture prime lens for Sony E-Mount cameras, and has answered the calls of Sony fans who have been asking for a lens brighter than f/1.4. The lens offers superb sharpness even wide-open at f/1.2, and has minimal chromatic aberration. There’s also fast and silent autofocus, an aperture ring (that can be set to clickless), customisable function buttons, as well as excellent build and handling that you would expect from a G Master lens. Some lovely bokeh and background blur make this a great option for portrait photography. It’s also barely bigger than the 50mm f/1.4.

If you’re looking for an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, then this could be a great choice, starting at an ultra-wide 16mm, zooming to 35mm. The Zeiss Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS lens gives sharp images, and with a constant f/4 aperture, the lens is more compact than it would have been had the aperture been brighter. The lens has a solid all-metal construction, and takes a 72mm filter on the front of the lens.
Best Sony E-mount lenses for APS-C only
If you’re using an APS-C Sony camera, you may want to consider a E-mount lens designed specifically for these models. They tend to be lighter than the full-frame optics, meaning they balance better with the lighter APS-C cameras, which can be particularly useful if you’re using something like the Sony ZV-E10 for run-and-gun vlogging. Below are a few of our favourite E-mount lenses for APS-C.
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is designed for crop-sensor cameras. Photo credit: Richard Sibley
At a glance:
- Filter thread: 52mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.3m
- Weight: 265g
- Price: 339 / £289
Built from the ground up for cameras with smaller sensors, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary produces an equivalent focal length of 45mm when mounted to a Sony E-mount camera, making it an excellent choice of walk-around lens. Even though it weighs just 265g, the lens has a relatively sophisticated construction of nine elements in seven groups, including two rear aspherical elements, and treatment with Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer coating.
In use, the lens impresses. Its nine aperture blades deliver soft, rounded bokeh in shallow depth of field, and our testing found it reasonably quick to FOCUS on a Sony A6300 – not as snappy as Sony’s own lenses, but certainly fast enough. It’s quiet, but there is an audible clunk when it engages FOCUS, meaning it’s probably not the best choice for video.
Sharpness, when you nail the FOCUS, really is excellent. This is a lens that’s begging to be used wide open, and your reward for doing so will be crisp and punchy images, with great central sharpness and beautifully blurred backgrounds.
Sony E PZ 10-20mm f/4 G

At a glance:
- Filter thread: 55mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.4m
- Weight: 219g
- Price: 748 / £749
Equipped with a powered zoom mechanism, the Sony E PZ 10-20mm f/4 G is well-suited for video shooters using Sony’s APS-C cameras. The electronic mechanism near-eliminates FOCUS breathing, and its mechanics are entirely internal, meaning it doesn’t extend or retract when zooming. This makes it easier to balance on a gimbal – another boon for video shooters.
It holds FOCUS on the subject when zooming, and in a welcome bonus for outdoor shooters, it also boasts comprehensive weather-sealing. While this is a video lens foremost, as we noted in our review, photographers should find a lot to like in its equivalent 15-30mm focal range as well.
Sony E 11mm f/1.8

At a glance:
- Filter thread: 55mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.12m
- Weight: 181g
- Price: 548 / £499
Suited to stills and video alike, the Sony E 11mm f/1.8 is maybe priced a little high to be a take-everywhere lens, but it is a nice option to throw in the kit bag if you don’t mind the cash outlay. The crop factor gives it an equivalent focal length of 16.5mm, and the close focusing distance of 0.15m with AF or 0.12m with manual FOCUS makes it a solid choice for close-up shooting.
This also means you can make the most of the generous f/1.8 aperture, and in our testing we found that the lens delivered consistently good sharpness in a host of different shooting situations. Can you ask for much more than that?
Sony E 15mm f/1.4 G

At a glance:
- Filter thread: 55mm
- Minimum FOCUS distance: 0.17m
- Weight: 219g
- Price: 748 / £749
The Sony E 15mm f/1.4 G is a new ultra/wide-angle lens for Sony’s APS-C mirrorless cameras, such as the Sony Alpha A6600, with a 22.5mm equivalent view. It’s got a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4, and has a close FOCUS distance to help give blurred backgrounds. You’ll also find there’s an aperture ring on the lens, which adds to the quality feel of this lens, which is particularly small, and lightweight, at just 219g! If you’re looking for a wide-angle lens for stills photography or video, then this is a great choice, particularly if you’re looking for something lightweight, that can still deliver excellent image quality.
Sony lenses – frequently asked questions
Confused by all the initials and numbers being banded about? Here’s our regularly updated FAQ section where we answer some of the most common questions we get asked about Sony lenses…
What are Sony FE lenses?
While the Sony lens system is officially referred to as ‘E-mount’, you may have noticed that a lot of the lenses are labelled ‘Sony FE’. It’s to do with sensor size – ‘FE’ stands for ‘Full E-mount’, and denotes lenses that are specifically designed to work with full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras. These are the A7 and A9 cameras, as well as the A1 and the newer ZV-E1.
This doesn’t mean that FE cameras won’t work on APS-C cameras like the A6500, they can and do. The key thing to remember is that mounting an FE lens on an APS-C camera will incur a 1.5x crop factor, meaning the effective focal length of the lens will be 1x longer due to the narrower field of view (so, a 50mm lens will effectively behave like a 75mm lens). Also, because they have designed these lenses expressly for the larger and heavier full-frame models, Sony hasn’t worried too much about balancing the lenses with its lighter APS-C cameras. So while you can mount an FE 50mm f/1.2 lens on the A6000, you may find that the setup feels very front-heavy.
Which Sony lenses are weather-sealed?
As a rule of thumb, all of the top-end Sony G Master lenses are weather-sealed, as befitting their status as professional lenses for working photographers. Beyond that, it’s more of a case by case basis – Sony doesn’t have a handy acronym it uses to denote lenses with weather-sealing, so if this is a priority then it’s worth doing a quick Google before you buy a lens. In general, the full-frame FE lenses are more likely to be weather-sealed than the APS-C lenses, but this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule.
Which Sony lens is best for wildlife photography?
As lens choice is so critical in wildlife photography, this is a question we get asked quite frequently. Many of the lenses on the list above would make for excellent wildlife lenses. Our pick for the majority of users would be the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, which provides excellent telephoto reach without the staggering cost of premium lenses like the lens (currently retailing at 12,998 / £11,999). Other good choices could potentially be the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master OSS II or the FE 135mm f/1.8 G Master.
