Standalone engine block heater for passenger cars

DEFA Termini 2100 (DEFA plug) 430060

The perfect solution for heating the interior of a large passenger car, SUV, and even the cab of the truck. Electric heater is connected to a 220 V plug and has two modes of heating. Built-in fan provides air circulation in the cabin and its rapid heating. Combined use with systems of engine preheaters of this company and remote control via SmartStart panel is possible.

The owners, who decided to put in their cars heaters DEFA Termini, are more than happy. a cold steering wheel and frozen inside glass is a thing of the past. Thanks to built-in sensors, the cabin air will be heated to a comfortable level, and further growth in temperature there is an automatic shutdown (55 ° C inside the device). Judging by reviews, this device does not come close to any comparison with the ceramic heaters, working from the on-board network (their power is clearly not enough for a full warming of the cabin of the car).

What electric heater for 220 V is better??

If you are one of the lucky ones who have access to electricity in the parking lot, the budget to buy a heater will be an order of magnitude lower. Electric devices are very simple: in fact, it is a heating element and a small pump that pumps the coolant through the circuit. The easiest variant will cost you 1500, the more expensive models cost 3000. For installation you don’t need to go to service, you can do everything yourself.

If we were making a rating of engine heaters 220 V with a pump, one of the first places would include the model “Vihr-500”. Though it has a small capacity (only 500 W) but it has overheat protection and the quality is quite satisfactory.

Slightly worse (of course, in our opinion) products “Lunfei. But in assortment it is possible to find and 2 watt models, which will warm up the coolant very quickly, even if you have a truck.

The device is used to ease the start of the engine at low temperature, it is designed for cars with engine capacity over 3000 cc. see. Equipped with an emergency temperature sensor that disables the heater during full system heating, avoiding overheating. Mounted in the cooling system, warms up the engine in 20-30 minutes. Thanks to the thermostat the optimal heating temperature is provided. To create a stable heating, you must try on only high-quality antifreeze, without their presence, use the device is strictly prohibited, since such actions will lead to irreversible failure of heating elements. It must also be installed according to all the rules prescribed in the manual to prevent premature deterioration of function or complete loss of performance.

Reviews show that the Lunfey 3 kW does its job, but it is not always convenient to use due to the electric heating system. It will be useful only to the owners of the garage with the spent electrical outlets to activate its work.

Severs with a 2 kW pump

Severs engine preheater is built into the cooling system of the car, runs on electricity 220 W, heats the engine, resumes operation at low temperature. The optimum temperature is provided by the thermostat, it shuts down the pump and heating element. As soon as the temperature of the fluid is lowered, it starts working again and constantly keeps it in the optimal range.

Reviews show that the engine preheater with a pump copes with its functions, but are characterized by low functionality and durability. It will be an alternative to the temporary absence of a heating system, but cannot be used on a regular basis.

Nomakon PP-201

The device is installed in the cut of the fuel line before the filters of fine purification. Starts working immediately after starting the engine, allows you to constantly monitor the temperature of the fuel, not to drop below 5 degrees. Works due to electricity, DC power supply voltage is 12V. The weight of the device itself is insignificant, it is 0.250 kg, so it is easy to install, does not create unnecessary pressure on the car. Controls vehicle overheating, can shut itself off if the temperature reaches 90 degrees.

Reviews show that the engine preheater copes with its functions, instantly heats, controls the available temperature. It is easy to use, with easy-to-follow instructions to install and activate it.

Vortex-500

The model is presented in a solid aluminum housing, has a built-in powerful electric heater that cools the fluid in the system. It has a reliable commutatorless pump with a wet armature, which guarantees the free circulation of fluid. This provides a uniform warming of the engine at different air temperatures. Built-in double protection ensures no overheating, increases reliability, increases durability. Included is a heater for the motor, a T-piece and two clamps.

Vortex-500 provides the optimal level of heat for the engine, improves its performance, prevents overcooling and reduced functions. Binding to electricity somewhat reduces the convenience of its use, as the models will be convenient only for owners of a garage or private home.

Orion 20

The automobile engine heater is created for quick heating up of the cooling liquid, it is used at a low degree. Connects to the engine cooling circuit with rubber hoses, and is mounted to the motor at the expense of the bracket. Heating is performed by the electric element, is connected to AC 220V. Only an earthed outlet must be used for connection. The heating process occurs within 20-25 minutes, the heat spreads only to the area of the hood, inside the cabin there is still cold air. It only heats up after the unit has finished working and the built-in heater has been turned on.

Reviews show that the system copes with its functions, supplies the car with heat, quickly activates. It is enough to plug it in for 20 minutes to restore the performance of your car, regardless of the degree outside.

  • Warm up the engine if the fuel is leaking;
  • Work with an open fire, beating from the boiler;
  • To leave the crane open when the heater isn’t working.

Every car and other vehicle has a heating system, but often its power is not enough for a comfortable stay in the cabin and the prosperous operation of the engine. This is where a universal standalone heater can help. It heats the cabin by heating and circulating the air.

The autonomy of this device is determined by the presence of the built-in unit for heating the air (diesel or gasoline burner or electric spiral) and the fan, which creates a directional air flow. This allows the heater to not depend on the work of the motor vehicle and has a large thermal capacity. This device allows you to heat any place in the car that is inaccessible to the regular stove.

Preheaters or alarm systems with autostart: what is better and why??

Winter has come and with it the traditional surge of interest to the equipment that allows getting into a warm car with clean windows in the morning instead of scraping frost on the windows with goose paws. “Wheels” found out, what car owners are not told by installers of starting preheaters and alarm systems with auto start.

Preheater. what it is and how it works?

Preheater is a device for increasing the comfort of the car driver and its passengers, as well as for significantly extending the life of the most expensive unit in the car. the engine. In regions with harsh climates to the issues of comfort and resource is added and a local pressing issue: the principle ability to start the morning, if the night pressed under minus forty.

These units are often called “webastas”, as the name of the most known manufacturer has become a common noun, like notorious “Xerox” or “Jeep”. The autonomous heater boiler brings the engine up to operating temperature in freezing temperatures without starting it. Thanks to this, the engine starts when it is already warmed up, which radically prolongs its life, the driver can start driving immediately, and the temperature in the cabin becomes comfortable in just a matter of minutes.

As a rule, most manufacturers have all models of preheaters presented in gasoline and diesel versions for installation in a car with any engine power system. Structurally the heater is a middle-sized block with dimensions about a three-liter jar inside which there is a combustion chamber, an electrically powered combustion air blower, a fuel pump, a liquid heating chamber and a pump. The device is usually installed under the hood of the car or in an empty recess of the front bumper, two hoses are hooked into the regular engine cooling system and the fuel pipe is led to the regular fuel tank. To start the preheater a signal-command is sent to it. Either from the timer in the cabin on a schedule (the easiest version: the engine warms up to a predetermined temperature of 15-20 minutes before driving to work / back), or with a charm or GSM-module. However, most often the heater is connected to the free channel of the car alarm system, many of which initially have the function of controlling such equipment.

In this case, in our country preheaters traditionally compete with remote start the engine alarm. such is the reality of our poorly living geography. Many people are fatally mistaken, believing that the now widespread alarm systems with auto start. an evolutionary development, a solution that replaced the preheater. And this is not so. Rather the opposite. a very and very compromise analogue, which popularity is caused by low incomes of the population. Let’s try to understand in details the advantages and disadvantages of these two options to provide comfort in the car in winter!

standalone, engine, block, heater

Pros and cons of both

  • Reasonable price for equipment and installation
  • One system for warming up the engine and the passenger compartment
  • Control without distance limitation if GSM module is supported
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Engine wear and tear due to cold starts
  • Difficulty parking near the house because of exhaust fumes and engine noise flying into the windows
  • Potential risk of a fine for parking with the engine running
  • Prolongation of engine (and automatic transmission as well) by warm starting
  • Minimal exhaust and silent operation
  • Saving fuel and money
  • Relatively high cost of equipment and installation
  • Even higher cost in the remote control version
  • Even higher cost in the version that heats not only the engine but also the interior

But that was theses. now let’s consider the above in detail!

Do you need Engine Block heater? How it works, Self-install, How long to plug in, Is it working?

Costs and money

Starting from 20,000 for the version with key fob and starting from 20,000 for the version that is controlled via phone and mobile app. This, of course, the price of equipment with qualified installation “turnkey” by certified dealers, rather than plumbers with the “Yu-du. Probably, there are also more budget offers, but we still focus on production of manufacturers from among “first five” brands, but not those whose names sound like names of cheap action movies from 80th.

The most affordable preheater option, oddly enough, does not cost as catastrophic as the regulars of garage discussion clubs scare each other.

“Webastas and their analogs for a long time are pursued by the myth, attributing them to category of the premium and inaccessible to the usual car owner accessories, and this myth is erroneous. Basic installation of, for example, Webasto Thermo Top Evo Start will cost about 40,000 which is actually only twice as much as the cheapest GSM-alarm. While the alarm systems for 30 000, 40 000, 50 000 and even more expensive. it is full-packed.

Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption for engine warm-up. fi, you will say, we have not yet had enough of these ridiculous kopecks to count! Probably everyone has seen the fuel consumption at idling on the display of a car onboard computer. for engines with the volume of 1.5-2 liters somewhere from 0.8 to 1.2 liters per hour! Let’s take this figure for a liter. To warm up the car with the ignition in a frost we need twenty minutes. about 14 for about 0.3 liters of 95 gasoline. But 14. they are funny only in themselves, here and now And chickens, as you know, are counted in bulk and at the end of the season.

So, simplistically, let’s assume that we go to work on weekdays and warm up the car remotely by means of an alarm at least twice a day. During the cold period of the year, if you count it from November to March, this warming up will gobble up about 3,000 of your wallet So, not a lot. Although in fact. much more! The matter is that the same liter per hour at idle is the appetite of the motor warmed up to working temperature. A frozen chicken sucks in about twice as much. in 20 minutes it will consume about 0,6 liters. And it is already 6 000 for the season.

And a preheater for the same 20 minutes eats twice less fuel. 0,15 liter. And in winter it needs gasoline for a thousand and a half at most. Well, 1,500 and 6,000 is a pretty big difference. In cold regions like Krasnoyarsk Territory, Yakutia, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, etc., the fuel burns at night.п. In the coldest season the car is not heated before starting, and in general they do not let it cool down, starting the engine during the night at intervals with a programmed timer or a temperature sensor. In such mode, the expenses for a starting heater can be repaid by the economy on fuel during the first couple of years of exploitation.

Where does the fuel burn??

Both the automatic start alarm and the starting heater provide a warmed up engine and an opportunity to get into the car and drive away almost immediately. In both cases, the heat comes from the combustion of fuel. But where, from the technical point of view, it is better to burn fuel for warming up of the engine and interior: directly in the engine cylinders or inside the boiler of starting preheater?

Many people think that idling is the softest mode in terms of loss of life for the engine, and without load the engine with a good modern oil practically does not wear out. Alas, it is not so Idling and warming up is the most harmful for the engine. There is intensive coking of piston rings and valves, which is aggravated if after warming up you crawl into the sluggish traffic, rather than drive with a breeze. A layer of soot builds up on the insulators of the plugs. Low pressure in the oil system (unless the engine is equipped with a variable displacement pump) impairs sliding in the mating process.

Preheater, in which the combustion goes without the movement of pistons and shafts, gets rid of such problems and gets rid of the engine, preserving the resource. The period of the beginning of “oily burning”, falling of compression, difficult starting. everything that accompanies a tired engine is appreciably postponed. Accelerated gearbox warming up also takes place and is rather useful. first of all for variators. All this is especially actual if you have not a killed VAZ or old “right-rule car”, but a new car, bought with the expectation of long and trouble-free exploitation. In cold Siberian regions such care about your car is even more actual, and a starting preheater is a reasonable investment in your own “iron.

Smell and noise

The exhaust of a modern, functional engine is barely perceptible to the sense of smell and invisible to the eye. But only at operating temperature! A frozen engine running on an enriched mixture with an unheated catalytic converter gives off a choking stench. For a reason, it consumes twice as much fuel at idle rpm than hot.

And that self-starting stench systematically gets into your neighbors’ apartments in the morning. Yes, some people certainly don’t give a damn about their surroundings (“Who has two thumbs and doesn’t give a fuck about everything”).? That’s right, it’s Bob Kelso!” (c) TV series “Clinic”). But, I’d like to think that not all of them do. In any case, in decent apartment complexes it is not customary to do so. Ah yes, with a certain position of the car in a courtyard parking even the headlights during heating shine in the windows of the first floors in the dark winter morning, which also does not contribute to the cultural relationship between people and the development of civility.

Penalties

Why do you think that in Europe are not widespread as in our country alarm systems with autostart, and instead of them everyone puts preheaters? Because warming up the car in the parking lot they have a very severe punishment. And the developed and polished system er Social responsibility (well, what we call otherwise), does not allow you to rely on the silent solidarity of the neighbors. On the contrary: they will inform the police much faster, than absolutely strangers For here, as in a well-known anecdote, it is a rule, and that’s it.

This may come as news to some, but there is a fine for parking a car with the engine running. It is inscribed in Article 12.28 CAO on traffic violations in residential areas, Article 12.19 of the Code of Administrative Offences for parking violations, and, in fact, paragraph 17.2 OF THE TRAFFIC RULES. The choice of wording and, accordingly, the amount of penalty. flexible. They can disappoint you by 500, but they can also disappoint you by 1500. And in the two capitals, it’s 3,000

Let’s be frank: social responsibility is underdeveloped in our walking-field yet, and a lot of prohibitions are not tracked at all. But punitive reforms and control methods are known to be ever-evolving things. Remember how not so long ago, for example, we could easily park with an “emergency stop” along the curb near the metro in three lanes to get into a store?? Take a chance today? That’s right And the recent ban of smoking on the balcony? You couldn’t even dream about it, but now we have already had the first fines So, it is possible that in some future, car heating with autostart will become rather expensive.

So what’s better??

Figuring out the pros and cons of both concepts (car startup and starting heaters), we come to the conclusion that the best option is (suddenly) their tandem!

Yes, it must be stated that in domestic conditions and now and in the future the best option is a combination of a basic modification of the preheater and security system with auto start and control via GSM-channel and mobile application. In this tandem the heater is controlled by the alarm system with a certain configuration of settings (and possibly with some additional components).

In order to understand why this is the case, three indisputable axioms must be cited:

  • Additional security system for the car itself is necessary in terms of security, and in the variant with remote control via phone, it gives a dramatic increase in the comfort of using a car of any class and cost. A must-have, in other words.
  • Preheater. very useful and advantageous in operation option, but for most car owners, it is usually available only in the basic version, and it offers only engine heating without cabin heating and starting on a timer or manually. Any other modifications or options make the equipment more expensive.
  • In service menu of the most modern models of security systems there is a control of Webasto and its analogs. If there is no direct control of the preheater, there are additional interface modules.

What does the combination of basic starting heater and GSM-alarm system give us?? It gives the maximum set of comfort and benefits with minimal costs. Well with minimum. relative to a certain level of convenience, of course. It is also possible not to invest a penny, open the door with the key and warm the car, sitting in it on a “Emelya” mat. Installer at the request of the customer configures the alarm to control the preheater. you send a command, the heater heats the engine, which then starts and the regular ventilation system quickly warms up the cabin. The optimal option. when after the engine warms up, the alarm itself starts it at a certain temperature. But in some systems you have to send two commands: firstly to turn on the Webasto, and after a while. the motor. Anyway, in the end:

Preheaters

Company Webasto. is a German company with a history of more than 100 years, distinguished by the highest quality. Suffice it to mention the fact that in European countries with a warmer climate than Russia, the cars of leading manufacturers (Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Land Rover, Volvo, BMW) are equipped with various starting heaters (including Webasto) already on the assembly line.

Eberspacher

Ebershpeher. German company, one of the leaders in the production of pre-start autonomous liquid and air heaters Eberspacher. Their standalone liquid heaters are better known to the consumer as Hydronic. over, in our country the word Hydronic has become common and is applied to all independent starting heaters.

Teplostar (Binar, Planar)

Binar. Domestic analogue of such well-known heaters like Webasto or Hydronic. By all characteristics Binar is not inferior to German competitors and uses very high quality components. For example, Continental fluid hose, Pierburg pump, etc.д. Products are of high quality, but have a lower price than similar heaters of European manufacture.

Repair and diagnostics of heaters

Webasto and Eberspacher preheaters are designed for warm engine starting in cold weather. The heater is placed in the hood of the car and is integrated into the engine cooling system, has its own fuel line and gas pump. The heater takes a small amount of fuel from the gas tank, heats the antifreeze and pumps it through a small circle of the engine with its pump. When the temperature of the antifreeze reaches 40 degrees the standard fan turns on and warm air flows into the cabin with the engine off and all the security systems are operational. Read full text

Price autonomous starting preheater is quite high, but fully justified by the complexity of construction, the presence of the fuel system and cooling system, the German quality and production, and justifies itself not only received comfort, but also fuel economy and a significant increase in engine life.

There are several types of heater controls. The most inexpensive and common is the minitimer. We recommend to install it regardless of the presence or absence of installing other more convenient and advanced control systems. The most important advantage is that it is impossible to lose, and the batteries in it will not run out (power supply from the car network). The timer is installed on the dashboard of the car, from which it is possible to program the time of switching on and the duration of heater’s work within the range from 10 to 60 minutes. There are also three time presets, which are convenient to work with if the car is operated at the same time. Morning set time in the evening, daytime or evening start time in the morning, etc.д.

It is possible to connect the remote control. Remote control works within a distance of one kilometer (depending on the number of barriers between the remote control and the car (homes, garage wall, etc.).д.) Heating device can be directly switched on or off from the remote control, as well as the time of switching on and duration of heater‘s work can be programmed. You can also go the other way around: program the time of departure and the desired comfort temperature in the cabin and electronics itself will calculate the time of activation and duration of operation.

It is also possible to set the control from a cell phone. there are two possibilities: with a phone call or via SMS. A more economical option is to use the GSM module, which can perform many other useful functions. Save and send SMS with the command to turn on the car heater, as well as to control the alarm and any other electrical devices. The signal is received by the GSM module and arrives at the parking heater via the minitimer with a preset duration of operation. With the help of the control system for the pre-heater ThermoCall you can switch the heater on and off, select the mode and duration of the pre-heater. All these operations can be done from any telephone with a tone dial, if the car is in the network coverage area. The system is equipped with a Russian-speaking menu. The disadvantage of control system of heater ThermoCall is its high cost and the necessity to remember the control codes of car preheater.

You can buy and install a Webasto or Eberspacher starting preheater on any vehicle with either a gasoline or diesel engine. On cars with an engine of 1.4-1.8 liters is installed pre-start autonomous heater capacity of 4 kW., for cars from 2.0 and more liters. 5 kW. Heaters are available for 12 and 24 volt on-board systems, for diesel and gasoline engines. Heaters of diesel engines also help to maintain the temperature of the engine in winter conditions, that is, do not stop their work until the engine is fully warmed up and you can turn on the heater when the engine temperature drops, for example in traffic or at a parking lot in a strong frost.

There is also a summer mode of heater operation: in hot weather with the help of mini-meter or other device controlling heater you can switch on the fan in the car heating system and air from outside will flow into the car interior, which allows lowering air temperature in the cabin. In this case, the air conditioner will be off, but the temperature outside the car rarely rises above 30 degrees, while the temperature inside the car in the sun can reach 100 degrees. Heating fan operation is also possible as by program as well as remotely or by direct pushing of button.

In our technical center the installation of starting heaters is carried out by the specialists, who have passed training in the specialized centers of manufacturers, received the certificate of conformity and pass annual courses of professional development, having a wide experience of installation both on Golf-class cars, and on cars of luxury brands. We offer to install automobile liquid heaters on minibuses (Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter, Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Citroen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, GAZelle, Sobol and so on).), we install an autonomous air auto heater in addition to already existing car heaters for cars with big compartment or separately without preheater.

Installation of the autonomous starting preheaters, as well as other additional equipment, is our specialty. We have installed on the latest models of Toyota, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, etc. We have experience of installation on 12, 10 and 8-cylinder car modifications, in which under the hood of a screwdriver has nowhere to fall. Sale of preheaters Webasto (Webasto), Eberspacher (Eberspacher) and DEFA (Defa) is possible our technical center and without installation, in regions delivery is made for non-cash transfer by the transport company of your or our choice.

Nonautonomous heaters DEFA. Their advantage is the low price and low cost of fuel from the socket. Electric starting preheaters are an ideal solution for enclosed spaces (no exhaust) and businesses with a large number of vehicles (the cost of equipment parking lot 220V is much lower than the cost difference with self-contained heaters).

Dear clients, we would like to pay your attention to the fact that during the works on installation of the preheater the tank of your car must be filled to 1/3 with petrol and no more. Drainage of fuel from the tank is charged according to current price list.

All works related to installation, repair, and diagnostics of cabin heaters and air conditioning systems on buses and trucks are performed on our outdoor parking lot only in warm weather, at temperatures starting from 15C and free of precipitation.

Webasto Shop, the official distributor of Webasto (Germany), which produces autonomous equipment for all types of vehicles, offers you to install on your car (truck, car, foreign or domestic production) the engine preheater.

You do not need it because your car starts in cold weather and without additional devices? Did you know that:

A cold start the engine is like running 200-400 kilometers, t. е. a significant reduction in its service life;

Fuel, if a starting preheater is not used, is consumed up to 40 liters per 100 km;

harmful substances are emitted into the atmosphere 10-20 times more than permitted norms, which, naturally, does not positively influence the health of you and your family.

you do not need this problem? Then install preheaters. They guarantee:

❋ quick start the engine even in severe cold; ❋ reduced engine wear; ❋ time and fuel savings; ❋ warm interior after the car has been left in the cold with the engine off, and no need to clean the snow off it.

Preheaters are easy to control. To do this, you have to turn on a timer or use a special remote control.

How it works

Briefly about how the engine starter heater installed on the machine should work:

  • The control unit receives an activation signal from a thermostat or remote control.
  • The actuator motor is energized by the car battery.
  • The motor turns on, causing it to activate the fuel pump of the heating system and activate the venting device.
  • The pump of the device begins to pressurize to circulate the fuel, which evaporates in the evaporator.
  • Air flow to the heating unit.
  • An air-fuel mixture is produced which flows into the combustion chamber. This is where it ignites as a result of the interaction with the heated ceramic pin. In order to heat the latter, a small amount of current is required compared to the metal pin.
  • After the combustion of the air-fuel mixture the received thermal energy is transferred to the cooling agent through a special heat exchanger.
  • A suction pump is activated, which helps to start the circulation of antifreeze through the cooling system.
  • The heated coolant or water (depending on what is in the cooling system) transfers the heat to the engine.
  • Once the temperature of the antifreeze reaches a certain point (it depends on the manufacturer, but usually it is 30 degrees), there is an automatic activation of the fan of the cabin heating system. The heater blows warm air.
  • When the coolant temperature increases to the next threshold (usually 70 degrees, depending on the model), the amount of fuel supplied to the heater decreases. After the refrigerant cools down, the heater starts to operate at full capacity.

Diagram of operation of the autonomous engine heater
