Configuration of manifolds with set-up flow meters
Underfloor heating manifolds presetting is necessary and important. Even if the system has thermostats, controllers and other automatics. If you entrust the adjustment to the automatics, after a while all the flows will be as open as possible. So before we start the system, we tune the manifold. Adjust the flow on a cold system without turning on the boiler. Heating starts after billing the loops to check the temperature.
What is a flow meter and what is its construction
Flow meters are used for the initial adjustment of flows, which is easier, more accurate and faster with them. In addition, during operation it is possible to evaluate the current flow rate in relation to the set flow rate. To understand the mechanics of the adjustment you need to know how the flowmeter is built and how it works. This is a hollow body with a poppet that is supported by a spring. The spring is calibrated. Its tip is set into a transparent cone with a scale.
To help orient and adjust the flow rate, a flow indicator is mounted on the spring. In flow meters that are installed on the supply side, the flow indicator is set at the top of the body by default. In this position, it indicates 0 and the flow is shut off (as pictured above). If the flow meters are designed for installation on a return manifold, the flow indicator is at the bottom.
There are two types of flowmeters with and without fixation of adjusting sleeve position. The first ones are more reliable because they do not lose their settings, which can happen to ordinary flowmeters. But they are more expensive. And since the manifold unit itself is not cheap, they often install flow meters without fixation.
How to set flow at the flow meter
There are marks and numbers from 0 to 5 on the scale. The number indicates the flow rate is the speed of the coolant in meters per second (m/s). The order of flow adjustment is as follows:
- Remove (unscrew) protective cap. They are red on the Valtec manifolds.
- Loosen the fixing sleeve. If you don’t have one, you skip that step.
So one after the other we set the flowmeters for each loop of the floor heating. As you can see, without the locating bush, there are slightly fewer steps. Please note: it’s best not to skip the zero adjustment step. It does not take long, but allows you to check the calibration.
Techniques for adjusting underfloor heating flow meters
If you do everything according to the rules, you must have a thermo-technical calculation that shows the flow in each loop. There is a plan? Then according to the plan you set the values. If not, we act on the size of the loops. If we lay pipes with the same cross-section, we will have to modify the flow rate based on the required heat dissipation. But in this case we need to know the length of the pipe in each loop.
Let’s take an example. Let’s have four loops: 90 m, two 75 m and 50 m. The procedure for adjusting the flow meters of a Valtec manifold is as follows:
On the longest 90 m loop open the flow meter fully (if maximum flow is required) or set to the required value. Let’s assume that for this case we need a maximum flow rate of 5 m/s. To do this, we lower the flow indicator to the very bottom. There’s a pointer of 5 m/s.
In case the flow on the longest loop should be lower than the maximum possible, set the required value on it (even if it is 3 m/s or 2 m/s). Recalculate the rest using this value of flow.
Next, turn on the boiler and check how well the manifold is set. If they are the same length, and the same flow rate is set, it could be that one circuit heats much better. This is due to a different laying pattern. The circuit that heats worse probably has more bends or they are steeper. This increases the hydraulic resistance, which reduces the velocity of the coolant. This means that less heat is transferred. Decision to slightly increase the flow rate and see the result.

- The balancing valve for the secondary circuit allows you to adjust the ratio of hot and cold water from the return flow. The valve can be turned by means of a hexagon socket. It is secured with a clamping screw to prevent accidental displacement of its position. It also has a scale of flow capacity (0-5 cubic meters per hour).
- A balancing shut-off valve for the radiator circuit is needed to connect the mixing unit with other elements of the system. It also rotates using an Allen key.
- A bypass valve is a fuse that protects the pump from a mode in which fluid flow through it stops. It is triggered when the pressure in the system decreases to a predetermined level.

Keep in mind that schemes may vary depending on the type of heating system: one-pipe or two-pipe. For example, if you have a one-pipe system, the bypass should always be open so that some of the hot water can always pass on to the radiators. In a two-pipe system the bypass will be closed, as it is not necessary.
Please note! It is not necessary to place the manifold group upstream of the radiator circuit. If you have a small house and the temperature does not have time to cool down much as you go, you can mount a manifold on the return to the radiator circuit.
